I. Jesus Secretly Prepares the Passover vs. 12-16

A. Jesus prepares the passover in secret so that when Judas gives them up, the disciples could get away. Judas couldn’t give up a location he didn’t know.
B. Jesus gives instructions to a few, and the lost (Judas) wouldn’t understand it, much like the preparation for the first passover. (Ex 12:42
Exodus 12:42 NASB95
It is a night to be observed for the Lord for having brought them out from the land of Egypt; this night is for the Lord, to be observed by all the sons of Israel throughout their generations.
C. Spotting a man carrying a water picture is like a man carrying a purse, he would be easy to spot.

II. Jesus Reaches Out to Sneaky Judas vs. 17-21

A. Judas sat at the place reserved for the guest of honor. He wouldn’t have been suspected by the others, this was a shock. Jesus is referring to Ahithophel’s treachery. (The parallel between Ahhithopel and Judas ex.) Ps. 41:9
Psalm 41:9 NASB95
Even my close friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.
Matthew 26:22 NASB95
Being deeply grieved, they each one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?”
Matthew 26:25 NASB95
And Judas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” Jesus said to him, “You have said it yourself.”
B. Jesus reaches out to Judas by washing his feet. John 13:10-11
John 13:10–11 NASB95
Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you. For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”
C. Like Jesus we should reach out to those who betray us. Rom. 12:19-21
Romans 12:19–21 NASB95
Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

III. Jesus Selectively Institutes the Lord’s Supper vs. 22-26

A. Jesus institutes the Lord’s supper after Judas left, because it is a picture of the marriage supper of the Lamb. There are no lost people there. Rev. 19:6-10
Revelation 19:6–10 NASB95
Then I heard something like the voice of a great multitude and like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying, Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. “Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.” It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, “Write, ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’ ” And he said to me, “These are true words of God.” Then I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus; worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
B. The Lord’s supper pictures His sacrifice, His love (engagement ceremony), and our longing for His coming kingdom.
