1 John 2:1-2

Read, Pray,
A study in 1 John
Main Idea: The cross of Christ cancels our debt and gifts us righteousness…
Sin has to be dealt with...
“My little children i am writing these things to you so that you may not sin...”
a) my little children: possesive, caring, responsible, learners...
Would someone publicly take responsibility for you? There are parents who are super proud in the good times and somewhat ashamed in the bad…
This guy, a father in the faith, is laboring to bring something to the little children...
b) so you may not sin…
What is sin: Khata, Hamartia
Sin, Iniquity, Transgression… a missing of the mark, a failure, crooked behavior, breaking trust… this is what we are guilty of… we miss Gods Goal...
CAIN & ABEL: Khata is crouching at your door...
Genesis 4:6-7
[6] The LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? [7] If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.”
SIN IS IN US… once you take the first bite out of corn bread, or a nature valley bar, its not getting put back together.
GOD NOT GETTING HIS GLORY IS A BIG DEAL… SO Sin has to be dealt with…
the next part of verse 2
2. Jesus is the only one who can deal with it...
a) we have an advocate Jesus Christ the righteous
this word means helper in John 14-16 and refers to the holy spirit in you but in this passage its the same word translated advocate, and in the way its used in this passage its referencing Jesus, standing in the gap for us… THIS IS WHY THE GOSPEL IS GOOD NEWS…
if God is holy and we are not, someone needs to represent us who is holy.
JESUS IS RIGHTEOUS.
b)He is the propitiation...
This word describes the radical nature of the Gospel. if any religion where close at all to what christianity proclaims, with this word it seperates itself completely.
If wrath is required for sin, where does the wrath go?
was God just kidding when he said he was going to punish sin? is he a mean God for promising to punish sin (the world says yes) ?
IF GOD DIDNT PUNISH SIN HE WOULDNT BE GOD.
Hilasmos: God is satisfied with the payment for sin and pleased to restore his people back to himself…
Isaiah 53:11
[11]
Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities.
John 11:50–53
[50] Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” [51] He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, [52] and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. [53] So from that day on they made plans to put him to death. (ESV)
propitiation… the reason we dont sacrifice anymore… the goal has been reached in Christ though we struggle with Khata, we live by the righteousness of Christ and him alone…

with all rights privileges and benefits of the perfect one.
so what…
am I living as if my sin has been canceled?
am i trusting in my own defense?
am i trying to fly under the radar so my sin wont be son noticible?
Trusting in Christs righteousness to make us right before God isnt an invitation to sin as much as we want and not get in trouble.
Am I living as though his righteousness is mine?
When his righteousness is ours our desires are now his desires. Though we stumble and can be described as failing, his righteousness transforms us into those that image him...
Freedom from sin means we are no longer slaves to our old passions and desires… we have the right passions and desires.
