CIT: The sin of unbelief will lead to more sin, but a heart that believes in Jesus will be lead to worship.

Unbelief and sin

Jesus’s hometown
They heard Jesus’s teaching
Matthew 13:54 “and coming to his hometown he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works?”
They saw Jesus’s works
Matthew 13:54 “and coming to his hometown he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works?”
They still rejected him
Matthew 13:57 “And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.””
Just because someone hears the teachings of Jesus it does not mean that they have truly believed in him. This is true for many students today, that just because you have grown up in church and heard all the stories in Scripture, it does not mean that you are a Christian. There must be a moment of repentance unto faith. In the next section we will see the opposite of that.
Herod the tetrarch
When confronted with his sin he remains in his unbelief
JtB confront Herod with his sin in Matthew 14:3-4
But instead of repenting Herod silences the voice pointing out his sin staying in his unbelief
John the Baptist’s death foreshadows Jesus’s crucifixion
JtB was an innocent man who died because people were wanting to live in their sin, we see this in the most ultimate sense that Jesus, the truest of innocent men was killed because of sinners.
Jesus’s death calls out to us and tells us to repent.
Will you silence that voice and live in your unbelief, or will you respond to the call of the cross by faith that leads to worship?

Belief and worship

Those in need
Jesus has the compassion
Jesus saw the crowds in need of healing and from his compassion he met their needs.
Jesus saw the crowds in need of food and from his compassion he met their needs.
Most of all Jesus saw us as lost sheep and had compassion on us, he met our greatest need through the cross!
Jesus has the resources
The disciples thought there was nothing to feed these people with, but forgot that they were standing next to the man who spoke all things into being, therefore he can feed as many people as he wants with whatever he wants.
Jesus has the power
When these people thought there was nothing that could be done for them Jesus had the power to feed and heal them
Those who fear
Jesus is sovereign over us
Jesus, being sovereign over the wind and the water walks to meet his disciples
And if Jesus is sovereign over the wind and the waves he is also sovereign over our lives.
Jesus is with us
Even when we are afraid Jesus is near to us
Matthew 28:20 “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.””
Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
Jesus gives us peace
When we recognize that Jesus is with us even in the storm we receive true peace, as Paul says in Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” And this peace manifests itself in worship!
