Grade level: 4.7

2. Receiving the Children. vs.13-16
3. Warning the Wealthy. vs.17-31

Before the blessing there is usually a lesson.
When the Lord teaches us it is usually through these methods:
Text. The Bible, it’s characters, chapters, and convictions.
Trials. Unexpected times of suffering, poverty, and loss.
Temptations. The devil tempts us to do evil but Christ shows us the way out.
All are in our lives so we can grow in fellowship and prayer.
Quote - “All our failures are failures to pray.”
(Dr. Dennis Carter)
Here we have some PARTS that make a lesson on prayer.

I. The Request. Vs.35–37

35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.
Jesus has had interactions with these two here in Mark previously.
Mark 5:37 AV
37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
Mark 9:2 AV
2 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.
In the parallel account (Matthew 20:20-ff) it is their mother that asks Jesus this question.
36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?
John 15:7 AV
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
The words of God are the key to answered prayer.
Jesus will listen; you have an audience with the King.
We are…
Humbled by answered prayer.
Humiliated by unanswered prayer.
2 Corinthians 12:7–10 (AV)
7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
Hopeless without prayer.
37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.
How alike are you to the “sons of thunder”?
Do you want others be destroyed by the Lord?
Do you want others to quit preaching the Gospel because they are not your crowd?
Note: these two Momma’s boys have not yet been filled with the Holy Spirit.
Here we have some PARTS that make a lesson on prayer.
I. The Request. Vs.35–37

II. The Refusal. Vs.38–39

38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?
Ye know not what ye ask -
Mark 16:19 AV
So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
Psalm 110:1 AV
The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
They were not ready for what was to follow as they did not understand the Gospel.
1 Peter 1:10–12 (AV)
10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
Thankfully parents do not let their babies play around stoves, stick things in power outlets, play in the streets, etc.
39 And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:
James in his epistle learned this lesson:
James 4:3 AV
Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
We must pray and be dependent upon the Holy Spirit, not on our clever wording.
Romans 8:26 AV
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Thank you Lord for prayers I have asked that you refused to answer!
Here we have some PARTS that make a lesson on prayer.
I. The Request. Vs.35–37
II. The Refusal. Vs.38–39

III. The Restriction. V.40

40 But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.
to them for whom it is prepared -
A prepared place. Built by the Master Builder
John 14:1–3 (AV)
1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
A prepared people. Born again by God‘s grace.
John 3:3 (AV)
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
John 3:8 (AV)
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

III. The Restriction. V.40

IV. The Resentment. V.41

41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John.
Note - People that are like James and John are not aware of the impact of their selfishness.
What causes resentment?
Asking for positions they do not need to be in.
Romans 12:10–12 (AV)
10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
Trying to be in places over others before they are trained.
Philippians 2:3 (AV)
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Forcing their behavior and beliefs unto others.
James 4:5–6 (AV)
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

V. The Review. Vs.42–45

42 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:
44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.
Christ calls us to be servants.
1 Peter 5:3 (AV)
Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
Christ calls us to be Spirit filled.
Ephesians 5:18 (AV)
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
Christ calls us to be Scripture led.
Psalm 37:23 (AV)
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
Psalm 119:33–38 (AV)
33 HE. Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.
34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.
36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.
37 Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.
38 Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear.
45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Christ made a Divine exchange.
2 Corinthians 5:21 (AV)
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Christ took sin’s execution.
Galatians 3:13 (AV)
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Christ gave an ensample.
1 Timothy 3:4–6 (AV)
4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
Christ saved us from evil.
Titus 2:14 (AV)
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
Christ gives us expectation.
1 Peter 1:19–21 (AV)
19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
