Titus 3:5 KJV 1900
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Introduction

Salvation is a regeneration or rebirth and a daily renewal of life by God’s Holy Spirit.

The word regeneration means to be regenerated or given new life; to be given a new birth; to be renewed or revived; to be spiritually reborn or converted. Salvation is a spiritual rebirth; it is a person being born again by the Spirit of God.

The new birth is so radical a change in a person’s life that it is described as a washing which means a bath, a complete immersion.

Salvation is so dramatic it is just like the washing away of the old life and the receiving of a new life. All that concerns a person’s old life is washed away, all the …

• sin and evil
• corruption and injustice
• selfishness and greed
• guilt and doubt
• dirt and immorality
• pollution and worldliness
• failure and shortcoming

The Spirit of God cleanses a person—immerses the person in the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 1:7 KJV 1900
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Colossians 1:14 KJV 1900
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
1 John 1:7 KJV 1900
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Revelation 1:5 KJV 1900
And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
Revelation 7:14 KJV 1900
And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
The Spirit of God through the blood of Christ washes away the old life and gives the believer a new life.

The Spirit of God regenerates a person, saves him from his old life and gives him a new life—a rebirth—spiritually creating him into a new person.

John 1:12–13 KJV 1900
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 3:3 KJV 1900
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
John 3:5 KJV 1900
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
1 Corinthians 6:11 KJV 1900
And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV 1900
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
1 Peter 1:23 KJV 1900
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
1 John 5:1 KJV 1900
Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

We are not to be conformed to this world.

The word conformed comes from the root word schema is the word we get our word Scheme from... which means plan, fashion, the outward form, the appearance of a man.

It is the appearance of a person that changes from day to day and year to year. A man dresses differently for work than he does for an evening out. A man looks different as a young man than he does as an older man. His schema, his fashion, his outward appearance differs.

The word world in the simplest of terms means the world itself and everything in it because it is all corruptible.

The world, including the heavens and earth and all therein, is aging, deteriorating and dying; and it will pass away. The world is not perfect: not in being, order, morality, or justice.

The believer is not to be conformed to this world.

Now note something: the world, the very fashion and appearance of the world …

• seems to be unending

lasting, permanent, and

• seems to offer the very best of everything

pleasure, enjoyment, happiness, fulfillment, satisfaction, completeness

Everything about the fashion and appearance of the world is a lie.

a mask, a masquerade.
Even the very spirit of the world has within it the seed of corruption.

The seed of corruption is seen in the acts of the world.

and its nature, in the terrible spirit of …

• selfishness

• greed

• anger

• hatred

• bitterness

• ungodliness

• savagery

• division

• war

• deceitfulness

• suffering

• conflict

• ignorance

• deterioration

• death

• sickness

• disease

• cursing

• pride

• disorder

• decay

Note two significant facts, facts that desperately need to be heeded by the world as well as by believers.

The world itself and everything in it shall pass away.

1 Corinthians 7:31 KJV 1900
And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away.
2 Corinthians 4:18 KJV 1900
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
2 Peter 3:10–14 KJV 1900
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
1 John 2:17 KJV 1900
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Revelation 21:1 KJV 1900
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
Isaiah 24:4 KJV 1900
The earth mourneth and fadeth away, The world languisheth and fadeth away, The haughty people of the earth do languish.

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
James 1:10 KJV 1900

James 4:14 KJV 1900
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
1 Peter 1:24 KJV 1900
For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
1 Chronicles 29:15 KJV 1900
For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.
Job 7:6 KJV 1900
My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, And are spent without hope.
Job 9:25 KJV 1900
Now my days are swifter than a post: They flee away, they see no good.
Psalm 39:5 KJV 1900
Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; And mine age is as nothing before thee: Verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.
Psalm 49:12 KJV 1900
Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: He is like the beasts that perish.
Psalm 78:39 KJV 1900
For he remembered that they were but flesh; A wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.
Psalm 102:25–26 KJV 1900
Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: And the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: Yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; As a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:
Psalm 103:14 KJV 1900
For he knoweth our frame; He remembereth that we are dust.
Psalm 103:15–16 KJV 1900
As for man, his days are as grass: As a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; And the place thereof shall know it no more.
Isaiah 2:22 KJV 1900
Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: For wherein is he to be accounted of?
Isaiah 40:6–7 KJV 1900
The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, And all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: Because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: Surely the people is grass.
Isaiah 64:6 KJV 1900
But we are all as an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; And we all do fade as a leaf; And our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

The believer is not to conform, that is, fashion himself after the world …

• not to follow the fellowship of the world

2 Corinthians 6:17–18 KJV 1900
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
James 4:4 KJV 1900
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
Luke 2:34 KJV 1900
And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

• not to follow the fashion and lusts of the world

1 John 2:15–16 KJV 1900
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
1 Peter 1:14 KJV 1900
As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

• not to follow the course of this world

Ephesians 2:2 KJV 1900
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

• not to follow the god of this world, Satan

2 Corinthians 4:4 KJV 1900
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

• not to follow the leaders of this world

1 Corinthians 2:6–8 KJV 1900
Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

• not to follow the false security of the world

Matthew 24:38–39 KJV 1900
For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
1 Thessalonians 5:2–3 KJV 1900
For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

• not to follow after the deceitful riches of this world

Matthew 13:22 KJV 1900
He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

• not to live in pleasure on earth

James 5:5 KJV 1900
Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.

• not to follow the crowd of the world

Exodus 23:2 KJV 1900
Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment:
