I i two in my own calling, with, with Dad to go into ministry as a kid, a teenager. And I felt God was telling me that I should go into Ministry that I said, sure. But not use minutes if I don't like teenagers. As an eighth-grader. I told God that and he's okay. Anyway, don't tell God, no doesn't work right this morning and so he is at home and hopefully watching online. And so I get to step up and fill in which is a lot of fun. As I love preaching, as we look at. Here we go, past weekend. At, at my house. We had this high schooler the middle schoolers over and we watch a movie called back to the future, but you are probably familiar with and see, what does, what is the director said? What did the movie trailers? Say about what the problem of evil is who people are, what solution was the good life? What are the components within movies and Stephanie? What movies has updated house stories in good stories, and it's pointing us back to the greater story. I'm reading books all the time right now. I'm going through Lord of the Rings for the second time. First time was in Middle School when I forced myself because everyone I respected said, you need to reload the Rings and so I read it and it was miserable. And so I said that was terrible and I'm not going back to him. And now here I am as I'm reading stories and just thinking about their characters and there's something we would do with characters and stories and it's that we identify with them and sometimes you don't realize that's what we're doing until maybe you've had the experience for you. Watching a TV show or movie. And there's this a boyfriend and girlfriend that dated and then they break up and your heart is just not like crap. I don't want to watch a movie anymore. I don't know how to show it. Is babe. Ruined it because There was something we identified within, in the show scripture to, and sometimes you realize that sometimes we don't, and there's lots of people in scripture, we could identify with some people us with the disciples and some with the Pharisees, some Moses, or James or Thomas, or David, or Caesar, our Pilots are there. So many different people and scripture that you could find reasons to identify, whether what I've noticed is that throughout people's lives. They tend to have one or two or three people. That kind of is a common theme throughout their life. Something comes down to personality and how we're wired. There's some really cool websites out there about the Enneagram or Myers-Briggs. And it's, and then there's websites that say, okay, if you hear this type of Personality, there's these other characters in Scripture that are similar to that in the end. And when he realized I hate, I can I can identify with Ruth. You go back and read Ruth and it'll be read in a new light because you're saying you're connecting this way. It's just interesting how a hipster can come to life in so many ways. And why is a story, please don't hear me singing. Like, made up, I'm saying storage, is this narrative is estella's, here's what happened and it's so much fun to look at.

And so one of these people that we look at and I can identify with is Peter and so I was want to look at Peter for a little bit who, who is Peter. What's he like? He had a build a personality profile for Peter. What would you describe him as the man who calls himself a witness of the suffering of Christ in 1st? Peter 5 was not there. When Jesus was hanging on the cross. He was hiding in fear. The man who has caused us to be eager to serve remain seated while Jesus washes, disciples feet, the man who tells us that we should be clear minded and self-control so that we can pray fell asleep. When Jesus was sweating blood, the man who is so boldly telling us submit yourselves for the Lord's sake. That every human authority laughed off. The soldier, male gets his ear in the garden. None of this is meant to demean theater. The point is that it gives us hope this man, Peter who he's impulsive and immature, he grows up to be a leader in the church. The people you read about in the four gospels became the Peter Iredale tax and in a theater, the right? The two Epistles and it took effort and time and At the same time the Holy Spirit Works in his life and transforms him. And there's activity, activity the holy spirit in his life and we can learn from all this racket Peter and just kind of broad Strokes. Who is he? Well, he's comically impulsive twice. He jumped out of a boat fully clothed. He challenges Jesus. He spoke speaks out of turn and at times he demonstrates more energy, and creativity than was appropriate. And that that very energy and creativity that underlines, the second impression of Peter, that we have it in that that he's The Unofficial leader of the disciples. He often served as their spokesperson. He was one of the three disciples in Jesus's Inner Circle.

Like, when he heard the questions he he thought answer. Do it when he observes problem. He thinks solution Wentz. When he also demonstrates things, like when he hears silence, he needs to talk and when there's disagreement. He likes to challenge these different personality things in Scripture that we can see. And this is the guy that Jesus calls and says, you are the rock star with John the Baptist, which might be a weird place to start, but this is really crucial for understanding who Peter is until turn your bibles are going through a ton of scripture today. So you don't want to have your Bible out and I normally discourage and kind of got distracted with notifications on my phone. When I use my phone for a Bible for this one, because of the fast switching, that might be helpful. But either way, open your Bible. I want you to see that. I'm not making this up button and Luke 3:15 is where we're starting for now.

Says, now the people who were waiting expectantly and all of them were questioned in their hearts, whether John might be the Messiah and John answered them all. So, I baptize you with water, but the one who is more powerful than I am, is coming. I'm not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing shuttle is in his hand, to clear the threshing floor and gather, wheat into his barn, but he will burn with the fire that never goes out. Then along with many other after tations, he proclaimed, good news of the people, but when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch and because of her OT has his brother's wife. There is some weird marriage stuff, cut hair design, and dip paired. Added this to everything else and he locked up John in prison.

John, the Baptist was the opening voice. Proclaiming that Jesus was coming in that he's here. He declares that there's one, who's more powerful who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. He's going to clear the threshing floor. He's going to gather the wheat and burn the chaff. And it's word Messiah comes up. And then when we think Messiah, we've been in church. We know it's Jesus, but Messiah it. It's the anointed one is the Old Testament is to be able to reference to any ruling King. Cyrus the Persian king could be yahweh's, anointed in Isaiah, 45, and seas. Agent to deliver Israel. From Babylonian captivity and live it against the terms. Used to anoint, the high priest, and Elijah, and Elisha, and 1st Kings 19.

The idea of Messiah is something that is not new. But if people are listening to John, if thinking who's this, Messiah going to be? And then it comes Jesus and I think about who is the Christ that Peter was a seeking Peter and the general Jewish population. They were eagerly seeking. This lawyer came, they knew about Messiah. They knew the Old Testament. They're waiting for restoration of the Romans be kicked out for the Jews to be restored and for everything to be awesome. And so they were waiting for this Christ and they're actively looking. Who is it nasiah going to be in Saint? John? The Baptist comes around and wonder is this going to be the Messiah to what she says? No, it's not. They have Jesus. And the Jesus that they expect it was not the Jesus. That was revealed. There's something totally different that showed up. Jesus is everything they needed and nothing that they wanted. Jesus calls. His own disciples does customary for disciples to find a rabbi and then they seek to follow him and then the rabbi except sin. And in this case, Jesus goes off and signs his own. And until this relationship between Jesus and Peter is really what we going to be focusing on as we think about. How does how did Maya relate, what theater? Those look at how Jesus reveals himself to Peter and the disciples continues and he teaches, we're going to be jumping for joy, scripture bit, but he continues and it teaches the kingdom of God in the synagogue. Luke 4:31 is willing to look now.

I hope.

Yeah, that's the Saturday here and I'm starting Luke 4, verse 16, a talks about how Jesus came to Nazareth and he goes into that synagogue as usual on the Sabbath, and he reads from Isaiah. And he reads this, this crazy prophecy that he finds a nun. The squirrel. And I don't know if that's where they're at that day and a half into work out, or if Jesus, fix this passageway says, the spirit of the Lord is on it because he's anointed me to preach. Good news to the poor. You sent me to reclaim release for the captives and recovery of sight to the Blind and a set for you, the oppressed to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. And he rolled up his role and gave back the attendant. It does today, as you listen to scripture, has been fulfilled.

Do you have to starting to do some very interesting things with what you say? And people are starting to realize who he is Luke 4 verse 31 in containers. Does he went down to the perineum the town of Galilee where he was teaching them on the Sabbath? And they were astonished at his teaching because his message had Authority and its synagogues. Are, there was a man, with an unclean Spirit Who Cried Out the loud voice. Leave us alone. What do you have to do with us? Jesus of Nazareth. Eddie, come to destroy us. I know who you are. The Holy One Of God, but Jesus rebuked him and said be silent and come out of him and throw him down before the demon him down, before them. The demon came out of them without hurting him at all. Amazement came over all and they were saying to one another. What is this message for? He commands, unclean spirits with authority and power and they come out. It's all good news. We going to go out and every place in the vicinity.

Pastor continues has a 38 Ashley left the synagogue. He enters Simon's house, and Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. And about her. If we stood over her and reduce the fever, and I left her and she got up immediately and began to serve them. When the sun was setting, all those who had anyone sick with various diseases, brought them to him and he laid hands on each one of them and he healed them has happened throughout scripture. People people realize that Jesus has the power to heal them like, yes, I need that until they go to Jesus and they bring him. The SEC to be healed.

Jumping across the verse 8, chapter 8.

verse 26, says, Then they sailed to the region of gerasenes, which is opposite of Galilee. What he got out on land. A demon-possessed man, from the town, met him in, for a long time that he had warned no clothes, and do not stay in the house. But in Toombs, what he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said in a loud voice. What's he have to do with me Jesus? Son of the most high God I beg you don't torment me. Commanded. The unclean Spirit come out of the man and many times. It had seized him as though he had, was guarded Bound by chains and shackles. He would snap in the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted places. What is your name? Jesus passed in 30 and a half Legion? He said because many demons had an answered him and They begged him not to banish them to the abyss. A large herd of pigs with Larry feeding the Hillside and the demons begged him to permit them to enter the pigs. And he gave them permission before the demons came out of the man. That entered the pigs and they, the herd Rush down to the Steep bank, and into the lake and drowned. When the man who tended them saw what had happened. They ran off and reported in the town and the countryside. Not good news in all your pics, go and drown.

Especially when they can point the finger at the guy that caused it. Spinner people went out to see what happened. They came to Jesus, and he found the man, the demons had departed from I'm sitting at Jesus's feet dressed and in his right mind and they were afraid. Meanwhile, the eyewitnesses reported to them. How the demon-possessed man was delivered verse 37. Then all the people in The Garrison region, asked him to leave because they were gripped by fear. So getting on the boat, he returned.

The man from whom the demons had departed. Begged him earnestly to be with him. Please send him away and said go back to your home until that got what God has done for you. And so he went off for claiming throughout the town how much Jesus had done for him.

What we do with this.

There's this declaration of who Jesus is, there's things that there's two people are seeing up to you. If he can keep cast out demons, you can heal people later. We'll see what he controls nature and the Jews and Peter included had expectations or what the Messiah was going to be in. So they're trying to start to wonder. Who is this man? What's he going to do? What's going to be like? So those are just couple scenes of demonstrating things that people are observing of Jesus.

If we go back to,

Sorry, I'm all over the place. I'm a little tired today.

Yeah, that's what Luke 5.

We five chapter one. This was back to Peter. Sorry for jumping all over. Luke 5 verse 1. He says that's the Crowds Are pressing in to hear Jesus. Present in, on Jesus, to hear God's word. You were standing by the lake get Center at you. He saw two boats on the edge of the lake and the fishermen had left them and were washing their Nets. So, we got into on the boat, switch belong to Simon and he asked him to put out a little from the land. He sat down, and was teaching it the crowds from the boat when he had finished speaking. You said to sign and put out your Jeep into deep water and let you know for sure, catch Master Simon replied. We've worked hard all night long and caught nothing. But if you say so I'll let down the Nets when they did this. They caught a great number of fish and their Nets began to tear and so that the signal to their Partners in the other boat to come and help them and they came and they filled the boat so full that they began to sink on Simon. Peter saw that she felt like she says his knees and said go away from me. Lord for I am a sinful man. For he, and all those with him were amazed at The Catch of the fish they taken. So we're James and John in the 70 sons who are signs Partners In Jesus says, Don't Be Afraid from now on. You will be catching, people brought the boats, the land and left everything and followed him.

They start following Jesus starts Peter starts following Jesus and there's all these things. He's going to be gathering of who Jesus is and we could look at the story of when Jesus versus house.

And that's at Luke 8:40. It says, When the Crowds returned a crowd, welcome to him, and they were expecting him. Just then a man named Iris came. And you're the leader of the synagogue, and he fell down at Jesus's feet, and pleaded with him, to come to his house. Because he had only a daughter about 12 years old, and she was dying. But he was going the crowds were nearly crushing him and a woman suffering from bleeding for 12 years who had spent all that she had on doctors and yet cannot be healed in any way approached from behind and touched the end of his real instantly. Her bleeding stops. Who touched me? Jesus asked and they all denied it? Or when they all denied a teeter said, Master, the crowds are having an Indian pressing against you.

Jesus tells Peter Haden know someone touched me. And Enzo Peter's got this just cause there, was he saying to Jesus? What it would, who touched me. There's a crowd coming and trying to get healing and teaching. Jesus says, I know that power has gone out from me and when the woman saw that she's been discovered. She came from Blaine and fell down before him and in the presence of all the people she declared, the reason she had touched him and how she was instantly healed daughter. Your faith has saved you, go in. Peace.

When we learn about theater.

Just looking through, scripture reading the story as it's written. What do you know about Peter? Well, he's not afraid to tell Jesus. Hey, are you alright?

Are you confused?

Another key interaction that Peter has a Jesus in Luke 9:18. As well, he was praying in private and two cycles are with him. He asked them who do the crowds say that I am.

The key question here is hoodoo. The crowds say that I am and he's asking the disciples and private. They answered John the Baptist others. They Elijah and still others. Say one of the ancient prophets had come back and said Jesus says, but you who do you say that I am. A cheater speaks up and he says it's your dad's Messiah.

Peter is expecting Jesus as Messiah. And remember what I talked to her before about what their expectations were for this Messiah. There's going to be this this Warrior type King who's going to come in and clear out sales and bring in prosperity.

Anteaters. All of that. Sign me up. I'll be right hand the guy.

The dentist story continues on his a whole lot, we could cover, but we see that's for tells his death three times. We're going to skip forward to Passion week. National league is, is leading up to the crucifixion. But Matthew chapter, 16 is where we're heading now.

So, but we're switching between different gospels, different synoptics. And snapped, the comedian that Matthew Mark and Luke, they all kind of tell the same story from different perspectives and they all are there in the different audiences and have different agendas in their writing and so the little bit different perspectives, but we're going starting right now. Is that exact same spot where we were before, when your says that Jesus is the Messiah from after that verse 21. It says, from then, on Jesus began to point out his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, the chief priests and scribes to be killed and be raised on the third day.

What does it that the ruling king of besides going to come and Conquer and win? And battle says that he's going to be killed until Peter being Peters. You said? Hey, oh, no Lord. This will never happen. She's a turns and tells Peter get behind me. Satan a hindrance to me because you're not thinking about guys concerned about human concerns.

Peter being told by Jesus get behind me. Satan. Because he just thinks that he knows what's going on. He thinks he knows the situation is just fascinating to look at. The relationship has developed in. And Matthew until the right there was the first time, so there's three times Jesus, predicts his death. And that was number one. The second one is in Matthew chapter 17. Just the next day is over. Numbers 22. It says, as they were gathered together in Galilee, Jesus told them the son of man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men. They'll kill him. And on the third day. He will be raised up. And the disciples were deeply distressed.

Why are they distressed? Are are are things. I'm supposed to die. This isn't right. Again, Matthew chapter 20 verse happens.

Matthew 20:17, that's why they're going up to Jerusalem. Whenever you're in that land, and you go and you heading to Jerusalem, Jerusalem is higher up in elevation. So no matter where you are, you go up to Jerusalem. They're going up to Drew's when they took 12 disciples aside privately. And it says, on the way, I see, we're going up to Jerusalem. The son of man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes and they'll condemn him to death. So they will hand him over to the Gentiles would be mocked and flogged and crucified and on the third day. He will be raised.

Jesus is telling them three times. Hey, I want to die. It's necessary. And the third day Soul erased that they have their own agendas in their head. They don't spot in their head. They have their own schools, and their head. And, and they clearly or thinking about something else because in Luke 22:24, there's a dispute that comes out between them as they're being. Told you things. Luke 22:24. It says man. I just a few a Rose Among those without who should be considered the greatest. He said to him the kings of the Gentiles Lord, it over them and those who have authority over them have themselves called benefactors. It's not like you it's not to be like that. Among on the contrary. Whoever is the greatest among you shall become like the youngest and whoever leads like the one serving. For who is greater than the one at the table or the one that is served in.

Isn't it the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves? You are. The you are those who stood by me and my trials. I bestow on you. A kingdom. Just as my father, distilled one on me so that you may eat and drink at my table and my kingdom and you'll sit on Thrones judging the Twelve Tribes of Israel.

What do the disciples led? By Peter care about the debate and argue? Who is the greatest among them? Who's going to be in charge? Who's Got The Power? And Jesus says, no. No. No, that's this isn't how this works. We have a different goal here in sight, but they just don't get it. The disciples throughout scripture. They just don't get it.

Here in Luke chapter 22. It continues. Right? Right after they don't get it. She's a full of Simon decide that Simon Simon Lookout. Satan has asked to sift you like wheat, but I prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers. Lordy told him. I'm ready to go with you both to prison and the death, remember that whole Messianic lawyer thing. He's expecting to like go into battle with his sword and end and when cuz I'm ready to go both present and I tell you Peter. He said the rooster will not throw today until you deny three times that you know me.

You start to see who Peter is this character?

He's the leader. But he's impulsive.

In Matthew, 26 verse says, Jesus said to them tonight, all of you will follow me because of me for it's written illustrate. The shepherd and the sheep of the flock and we scattered, but after I've risen, I'll go ahead to see you in Galilee. Peter says Everyone Falls away because of you. I will never fall. Like this is that synoptic gospels Matthews version of it, a little different perspectives of Even If Everyone Falls away because of you. I will never fall away. Truly. I tell you tonight. Before the rooster crows will deny me three times even ask, if I have to die with you. I will never deny you and all the Disciples of the same thing.

He said we learned he's confident, but he's not even if he's Fearless, but he's confused. He is. Arrogant, may be eager, maybe sell Focus. But at the same time, he's Chosen and he's loved and he's trusted by Jesus. Jesus was praying for him is empowered is the leader.

So, as we read narrative, how much does Peter do we have in a s story continues in the end? It gets really fascinated. There's if I Told You. So, part of the story, the story, Jesus prays in anticipation of his betrayal, is in the garden and Saint John chapter 18. This the story continues in passing week.

John 18 verse 1 says, after Jesus had said these things, what things you should always ask when it says that while he's praying for his believe all the Believers, the praying for his disciples. He's in the Garden Kissimmee praying his final prayers. If he says these things, he went out with the disciples across the Kidron Valley where there was a garden and he and the disciples went into it. Judas, who betrayed him. Also knew the place because Jesus, it's often met there with his disciples. It's a Judas with a company took a company of soldiers, and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees, and they came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

It sounds like if you watch the details version of this, there's like five or six soldiers, that time company of soldiers at the 10th of allegiant, like six hundred soldiers are showing up to capture Jesus.

And Jesus knowing what was about to happen. Went out and said, who is it that you were seeking Jesus of Nazareth? They answered in Jesus, as I am. He

Do that Judas betrayed him was also standing with them. And when they when Jesus told them I am he they stepped back and they fell to the ground. Why do they fall to the ground? When Jesus said I am, he That went on a night. When I preach often mention that there's things in scripture specially the New Testament, where they make a phrase, and then it's like a bookmark going back to the Old Testament. And so this, this is, and he is a bookmark and goes back to Exodus chapter 3 when Moses was talking with God. And says, when Moses asked, God, if I could go to the Israelites and stay to them the god of your ancestors who sent me to you, when they asked me, what is his name? What should I tell him? I got a revised to Moses. I am who I am. This is what you're supposed to say. I am has sent me to you. Jesus saying I am here. This is a bookmark going back to saying that. I am God. And there's no like, they'll let it in right here. Jesus is being very clear. I am God.

It's only fall back.

Images of ask him again as their kind of get getting back up and he says who was it, that you're seeking, Jesus of Nazareth, verse 8, chapter 18, John it says I told you I am key. So if you're looking for me let these men go and they're supposed to feel the words that you had said. I have not lost one of those that you've given to me.

Then Simon Peter who has a sword. If you have a compulsive leader, who is ready to jump into battle, who gave him the sword, but Simon Peter, who had the sword and struck off. The high priest, servants struck the high priest servant and cut off his right. Ear. The servants name is Mel Gibson at that. Jesus said to Peter, put your sword away. Am I not to drink the cup? The father has given to me.

Peter's bravery is not only useless but it's Peter showing that he has no idea what Jesus is about. Guess I did Niall of the worth of Jesus's is going into. And all the synoptic gospels. Matthew Mark, Luke point also to the vicious, massive failure of the disciples understand who Jesus is

But as I've said, many times this morning, the story continues first. 1512 of John, chapter 18. Then the company of soldiers, the Commander in the Jewish officials arrested, Jesus and tied him up and they led him to Anna since he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas. Who is the high priest of that year, This was the one who had advised the Jews that would be better for one man to die for the people.

And this was a queasy queasy ossicle politician. He had the title of high priests at one point, but then he also had the the title of the maker of Kings. He has five sons and each of the five Sons also became high priest. And kind of the idea that wants your high priest, you, you're always high priest and you have authority and its politics going on. If it did, go to Anna's

And then they go to Caiaphas.

And there's this interrogation that is about to happen. And so, meanwhile is interrogations about to happen. Verse 15 and says Simon, Peter was following Jesus and as was another disciple. John and his gospel, John never refers to himself as John. He's always that other disciple or the one that Jesus loves Jesus and Peter, and John following, and that disciple was an acquaintance of the high priests until he went in with Jesus, to the high priest Courtyard, but Peter remains. See it standing outside by the door until the other disciple, the one known to the high priest went out and spoke to the girl, who was the doorkeeper and brought Peter end. So John gets in. We don't know why maybe he was rich. Maybe as well-known. Maybe as a business partner, some sort, but John get them through the gates and to be able to follow Jesus closely, and then he pulled some strings and gets Peter in as well.

Then the servant girl, who was the doorkeeper, said to Peter, you weren't one of this man's disciples to, are you? I am not, he said not a servant and officials have made a charcoal fire because it was cold and they're standing there warming themselves and Peter was standing with them warming himself.

Yes, charcoal fires are right. Where the Iowa save a certain smell certain alarm. It's not very bright rememberable. You can put your speak and think back to the last time you were a charcoal fire and you can remember what that night was like.

We're going to see charcoal fire throughout year.

Why would Peter deny being a disciple of Jesus?

Get in the value of Honor towards one's teacher, that won the times. Harry says, that the view may have been widespread that the honor of a person's teacher, or disciple, should be as dire as one's own identity falsely. Denying, one's relationship with another was shameful and someone to slave demand weather. Peter is one of Jesus's disciples and he denies it. It's just like the elite day, went earlier, different passage. There was a blind man. What the gospels often do is they put the disciples up in as a contrast to others who are not in positions of Honor, I guess is how say it was just blind, man, who recognizes Jesus and, and

Peter ends up Ally himself with the Enemy. He says I am not part of this.

Is he really saying that the alliance up with it that the enemies are? As I as I'm trying to put myself in this position at, and experience the story as, as as as written. I'm not sure that's what it is. I don't think this bad intent as much as it says that Peter was uncomfortable. It was cold outside of said, they're standing by the fire and if you get called out as one of the people who was part of the uprising, Guess who's not standing by the fire anymore?

It's a Peter he chooses the warmth of the fire over the cost of the witness and then Jesus, he gets interrogated and meanwhile versus 18:25 this continues. It says enough Simon. Peter was standing and working himself. It said to him, aren't you one of the disciples to and he denied it and said, I am not one of the high priest servant, the relative of the man whose ear Peter head cut off.

But then I see you what time in the garden. Think about that. Peter attacked a soldier. Didn't have any repercussions for it is. A lot of chaos going on and then the relative of the guy who is had his ear, cut off his head. Then I see you in the garden. Also meeting Hayden. I see what you did.

Does he denies it? And immediately the rooster crows?

The accusation. Someone from such a high status by being with someone on such a high status would, cause a lot of weight.

It is this guy who recognizes Peter from being in the garden. He also was that there was going to be crying, There's going to be punishment, There's things that Peter was not want me to go with you. Not right now. Meanwhile, Jesus is suffering is being put into interrogation that. There's just a huge difference between Teeter carries his own life that Jesus and what's he doing throughout this season? He's warming himself by the fire. Out of losing fear of losing Comfort or status, or safety Ron, or whatever. I'm reading between the lines a little bit here because it doesn't spell out exactly why he does what he does, but Peter denies knowing Jesus.

It's not skipping the important part. Come back for Easter Jesus. He, he tried by Pilot. He's flawed. He was mocked and beat, and spit on in simulated, and send them to death and then is crucified on the cross. If anyone should have been solid for all that, it should have been theater. He was the leader. He was the one who was bold and outspoken. But if you look back at challenges, go back and read the story, where's cheater? He's not there at the crucifixion. What you thinking, what you feeling? But I think he had some fires in his life that he wasn't willing to give up.

So skipping for a John chapter 20.

Do that after Jesus was crucified after he was buried. It says on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early. Well, it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb and so she went running to sign in Peter and the other disciple, the one that Jesus loved and said they'd taken the Lord out of the Tomb and we don't know where they put him. At that theater. And the other disciple went out and heading for the Tim and I thought you were running together, but the other disciple, outran, Peter and got to the tomb first. Mary Magdalene, you know who she is. She's the one that Jesus cast the demons out of.

She's the one who gets listed as one of the women who supports Jesus in his missions. And so, she goes the tomb first while still dark and she finds it open and what she assumes the worst instead of the best. She she, she

The issue isn't that? Jesus? But she doesn't get what's happening in the body is missing and she gets concerned that the body is missing. Because she runs off and she gets Peter and John.

When the commissary says, it's Mary who comes to the tomb? First Love is always. He has to bring, she has sinned too much and Jesus had done for her. What no one else could do. He had forgiven and cleanse her. So, she came out of the darkness sometime around 3 a.m. Only to discover that something had happened, the Stillness removed. During this time. I had a shed in my church in Colorado, that accept all my tools, because I did a lot of maintenance on the building and the shed, I went in one day, and I noticed that stuff, that wasn't quite where I left it. Other than that, there's a bucket that has kicked over and I start looking around and just this Eerie feeling that someone else was here. And then as I looked around, I start noticing those stuff was taken as well. But but you you know that feeling when you've been robbing someone else has come into the place where things aren't quite right in. This is what Mary was feeling, just thinking. So you said broken in and so she gets to the grave and she know someone's there. And so she assumes the body's gone and they just don't get what's going on. I'm so she goes and she tells the disciples then but surgeon see she tells Peter And John.

Probably Peter and John are hanging out with Jesus's mom at that point, looking at the resurrection at the crucifixion and Jesus command for John to take care of Mom.

But the report as we don't know where they've laid him. And so they're concerned about a location of a lifeless body and no one else. Think of any other possibility, what's happening there is and where did the body go? So Peter and John, they run to the tomb.

Do 20:3 at that Peter and the other disciple went out heading for the tomb, they're running together, but the other disciple outran, Peter and got to the tomb first fascinating detail stooping down there. He saw that the linen cloth lying there, but you did not go in then following him. Simon Peter also came in the under the two minutes is all that. The linen cloths lie in their the wrapping that head down on his head was not line with the women. Claus butt was folded up in a separate place by itself.

The other disciples who had reached the team first also went in and saw and believed. They had not yet. Understand that scripture. What I meant. Sorry that you must rise from the dead. Jesus says over and over and over, he must rise from the dead but they don't understand what Jesus. Is the saying that is that he must rise from the dead. Was John who runs the fastest? Those who he sees and he believes. But this whole thing with the linen cloth, what's that about? it later, they would wrap these bodies and stuff them with herbs and oils and and help the body not stink and

The Greek is literally at the clothes were lying are neatly still in the folds that had Claude. The separate is almost as if the Dead one had stepped into life took off at the garbage himself and not, not. Rushing to take care of the guards were outside, but take the time getting out.

Why is it mattered? Will he says his body was not stolen. His body was not misplaced until John sees this and he believes his love and understanding John's. The first one to understand this note John besides John went and also and he saw and he believes his love, bring some to the tomb. His eyes had his lenses perspective of love for Jesus.

And he's put there and contrast of Peter who does not operate primarily from this love. Is this something else if heaters operating from?

Because afterwards, Peter and John to go home to their own homes, and and maybe there's fear in perplexity or gratitude. They they they go home and they Ponder what happened. Later that night. They have the secret meeting John 20:19. Play the secret made in one of his evening of that first day of the week. The disciples gathered together with doors locked because they feared the Jews. Are they talking about? Crap. Now, what?

Does peace be with you? Sorry. The doors are locked. They feared the Jews. Why this year? The Jews? Well, the body is missing.

Jesus was killed for starting this Uprising. Our list of this movement challenging to be king. And now, List of things. Continuing the Jews are there in a common. They're going to want to squish this quickly. So they're afraid their lives and so he does. He comes in and stands as peace be with you. Whitey's weather panicking for 122 there in a locked room in Jesus's walks in

That there's this, like, I kind of think of it, like ghost Jesus, he, he, but when he dies, he has not just sit and Duffy broke a space, and time Jesus. He continues and he says later on.

But first, I want to be up 24.

In 2027 said this, he showed them his hands and his side until disciples rejoice. When I saw the Lord, and Jesus said to them again, teeth to you as the father has sent me. I also send you not just saying this, he breathed on them and said receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any they are forget. They are forgiven them. If you retain the sins of any they are retained.

Do Jesus, eat. And he says, because you seen me and you believe blessed are those who have seen and have not seen and yet they believe, I was just say that we're 29, Thomas later on, Thomas, the doubter in the Twin he comes in and he says, unless I see the marks, the nails are not going to believe, that Jesus is there, because Thomas wasn't in that secret meeting. And so Jesus, he he get to this point and he, and he shows Thomas the wounds and he says, now that you've seen you believe, but there's no do others later, if you do not see, and they will believe movie talking about, I think that's us, but we need to keep going for time.

Story continues ago and it's pretty clear that they still don't really understand what's going on. John 21:1.

Does after this? Meaning disciples hanging out with Jesus. Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of tiberias. Sea of tiberias, is a Sea of Galilee, but John was written two to not Jews and so different name. Gary deal himself in this way. Simon Peter Thomas called the 20th annual from Cana of Galilee zebedees, son, James, and John and two. Others of his disciples were together.

Simon Peter says I'm going fishing.

Why is he going fishing? Do you remember? Peter's job previously? Game over. Now what? I'm a fugitive people know who I am. Maybe they're not going to be happy with me. I'm just I'm just going to go back. Says, I'm going fishing. These men, they needed time to work through the events of the last days are overwhelming. Their whole world was shaken. Everything they signed up for Apparently failed. So when I say I'm going fishing six other disciples join and there's something, they know it's something, they're comfortable doing and it even say I'm going back to the to the boat, not just a boat. There's this indication that they're just going back to their old way of life.

But it says, after they go fishing.

First three chapter 21, I'm going fishing. So we're coming with you. So they went out and they got into the boat, but that night, they caught nothing.

There's one thing, Peter should be good at its efficient. He's failing all over. He's trying to he says I would never ever deny you. Jesus. He denies him. He's trying to lead he hides during the crucifixion. He said, okay. I'm done with this. I'm not very good at the other disciples. I'm going to go back to fishing but he goes fishing, he catches nothing. And so as the sun was Rising, Jesus stands on the shore and he watches numbers for. It says it when they break came Jesus. Stood on the shore of the disciples, did not know it was Jesus. Friends, Jesus called them. Don't you have any fish? No Lancer admitting failure. Cast the net. On the right side about you told on that. You'll find some until he did and they were unable to haul it in. Because the large number of fish and the disciple the one that Jesus loves said to Peter, it's the Lord member John operates out of this lens of Love. He's, he's at, he's not disgusting mess. Who thinks that everything is about what he wants. But he's he sees Jesus as soon as it hits the Lord. And so Peter hear some John that the Lord in till he dies, his outer clothing around in for you, taking it off and he plunges into the sea. Is there not far from Land? Maybe a hundred yards. The other disciples cannon from the boat Dragon the net full of fish. It's a lot of same right here for a grown man. Jump off the boat and swim. And when I think of what's going on here is this wasn't the first time that Peter was hanging out with Jesus after the resurrection.

It looked, there's something else that Teeter is. Trying to get to.

There's an elephant in the room. Maybe maybe the whole thing about denying Jesus and the disciples not supposed to do that tonight as a teacher. But that that there's an elephant needs the address. He's ready to fix this relationship and it's a deal with it. And so they get to the shore and there's another charcoal fire again, but this time Jesus builds it 21:12 says come and have breakfast.

David Bibles dared to ask him, who are you? Because they knew it was the Lord, the Jesus came, and he took the bread and give it to them. They do the same with a fish. Now. This was the third time to the disciples that he But he appeared to disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Disciples have breakfast with Jesus. They're free to ask Ali. Is there hungry? Peter takes matters in his own hands. He failed again and again, And teaches us provides. Anyway, well, breakfast is going on. There's this crucial interaction and I don't want you to follow along here because this is very important. John 21 verse 15. It says when they eating breakfast. Jesus, as Simon, Theodore Simon, son of John? Do you love me more than these? Yes. Lord. He said to him. You know that I love you feed my Lambs. He told them a second time, you ask him sign his son of John. Do you love me? Yes, Lord, you know that. I love you suffered. My street has a third time, Simon, son of John. Do you love me? And Peter was grieved that he asked a third time. Do you love me? He said Lord, you know everything, you know that I love you feed my sheep. Truly I tell you when you were younger. You would tie your belt and walk wherever you wanted. But when you grow older, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will tell you and carry you or you do not want to go. He said this to indicate what kind of Death Peter would glorify God with.

There's unfinished business that Jesus and Peter. Take care of. He's at your house. Get her signed a deal with him personally.

It was backslider was not only welcome home by Jesus, but he's commissioned to continue to Shepherd, continue to lead, continue to take care of his flock. When is little doubt when the time. That's the says there can be little doubt, but that is whole scene is meant to show us the cheaters completely restored to its position of leadership. Three times. He denies his Lord. Now. He has three times The Firm, his love for him. And three times. He has been commissioned to take care of the flock to the side effects of a demonstrated demonstration that would ever have been take than the mistakes of the past. Jesus was just storing Teeter to place a trust. It's further worth noting. That one thing about what Jesus questions heater prior to commissioning him, to tend the flock with love. This is a basic qualification for Christian service.

Jesus says, do you love me more than these and if he doesn't Define what these are but there's some options one of them. As do you love me? More than these other disciples love me? Looking at Jon. Do you love me more than you love these other disciples. Do you love me more than you love fishing?

Ask me later about the Greek here. People write lots of commentary about the stuff and it's interesting. But Peters grieved. Because he's admitting his failure here. Needs to recognize and he's three times. Do you love me, is definitely connected back to do you? 3 miles, 10 miles until Teeter. He, he gets told Shepherd, my sheep feed my Lambs. Follow me. Keep following me despite the failures despite Lear character flaws, keep following. And so Jesus gives his total renew renewal to Peter. He gives him his authority in front of the rest of disciples. And then he says, hey you're going to die. One day that the first 18 is saying that You going to continue to carry on? There's not going to be what you want. So, keep following me.

So Jesus fine until they find us restoration and healing Peters home. Yes. He's going to die. A martyr's death to glorify God. But that's also. He said he says he is willing to lay down his life for Jesus. And so everything is awesome. But Peter, looking back to the story, he chooses comfort of fire over his witness of Jesus. My question for us today is what is our fire that we have? What is our comfort that we're pursuing? What is the things in our lives? That right now sitting in his church chairs, and you're comfortable in your reading your Bible. And you said, yes, of course, I'll do that. But when the Super Bowl comes on are going to work gets tough or when the kids are super needy. What what are the things that we're going to go to instead? What would our fires Peter? He should have lost his position of authority as I read this. And I think about Peter if he can screw up as much as he did and yet be forgiven by Jesus and yet be used by God and such the way that he did. And we come to Jesus. Isn't this distant God? Who just find pleasure? In punishing us? Until there's some things that we need to follow through with what their responsibilities. Well as Christians, we need to expect that life is not going to be easy. You got to expect their fires are going to get in the way and we should continue to love Jesus. Anyways. Even when you're realizing that, you're sending in this pattern of sin, keep loving Jesus. Anyway, there's no point in hiding it. Keep on following him and then there's a command. And I believe it's not just repeat it. But for all of us than Shepherd his sheet.

As we moving to take to communion right now. There's this quote from CS Lewis, and I want to think about the way that we reflect on our lives, the way that we believe affect our lives. It's closed, says people often think of Christian morality of the kind of bargain. And what God says, if you keep a lot of rules, I'll reward you. And if you don't, I'll do the other thing. I do not think that it's the best way of looking at it. I much rather say that every time that you make a choice you're turning the central part of you. The part that chooses me, something a little different from what it was before. I'm taking your life as a full with your and innumerable choices, all your life, long, all your life long. You are slowly turning. The central thing, either into a Heavenly creature, or a hellish creature, either into a creature. That's in harmony with God. And with other creatures and with itself or else into one that is in a state of war north hatred with God as its fellow-creatures with itself. To be the one kind of creature is heaven. That is joy, and peace, and knowledge, and power. And to be the other means, Madness for the Odyssey, rage and patents Eternal loneliness, and each of us at the each. Each of us, at each moment is progressing to one State or the other. There's a concept that you might find in size, will class way. We are never stagnant with God. We're always moving towards them are away from him until where are we? And its attention. We got to deal with as Christians. We have freedom in Christ. We have forgiveness and pray for the same time with that freedom and forgiveness. And Grace. The way we live is going to be drastically different than others, the way others do. What's the problem that often comes up is that we forget about this free time? I forget about forgiveness and Grace and that we have Jesus. Emily. Forget the way that we live our life. Changes to. So, how do we not forget when we come to the table? And we remember me to do it regularly and 1st Corinthians chapter 11, verse says, where I received from the Lord. Why passed on to you on the night that he has. Betrayed the Lord took Jesus Took bread and when he had given thanks, he broke it. And said, this is my body which is for you. Do you listen remembrance for me? I'm the same way. You took the cup. And after supper. He said this is the cup of the New Covenant in my blood do this as often as you drink it and remembrance of me for as often as he eat this bread and drink the cup you proclaim, the Lord's death until he comes. There's a thing about remembering it, when you remember who Jesus is that he's gone that we are not.

Are closed fires are no longer that attractive?

So don't stay in your Coal, Fire confess, it clean to Jesus. If we have Jesus going to store Peter, he can restore you as well. I pray Lord God. Thank you for today. Thank you. That we get to be here and to read your scriptures.
