Disobedience regarding sin - Last week
Disobedience
rejecting
Submission
Deuteronomy 11:27–28 A blessing, if ye
obey the commandments of the LORD
your God, which I command you this
day: 28 And a curse, if ye will not obey
the commandments of the LORD your
God, but turn aside out of the way which
I command you this day, to go after
other gods, which ye have not known.
Matthew 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy
will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Matthew 26:39 And he went a little
further, and fell on his face, and prayed,
saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let
this cup pass from me: nevertheless not
as I will, but as thou wilt.
1 Samuel 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath
the LORD as great delight in burnt
offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying
the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is
better than sacrifice, And to hearken

than the fat of rams.
Matthew 7:26–27 And every one that
heareth these sayings of mine, and
doeth them not, shall be likened unto a
foolish man, which built his house upon
the sand: 27 And the rain descended,
and the floods came, and the winds
blew, and beat upon that house; and it
fell: and great was the fall of it.
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore
to God...

city, and cry against it...

Believers we have a command to follow,
obey, and adhere to.

life and your choice what you do with it.
I would suggest that it isn’t up to us, we
need to seek the Lord’s desires for our
life
Proverbs 3:5–6 Trust in the LORD with all
thine heart; And lean not unto thine
own understanding. 6 In all thy ways
acknowledge him, And he shall direct
thy paths.
The Lord is giving him a chance to
preach revival and repentance to an
entire city of hundreds of thousands of
people. Many of us preachers would
jump at an opportunity to preach a
crusade to a large city. The last verse in
Jonah says more than 120,000 which
did not know their right hand from their
left. That means children.
Three days to cross the city, walls over
100 feet high and wide enough for 3
chariots side by side. Based on
archeologists findings
It was 500-600 mile journey 20-30 day

Reason
Jonah 1:2 …for their wickedness is
come up before me.
When the Lord asked you to do
something, He always has a reason. He
would not ask you to do something
without a reason.
The reason He asked asked Jonah to go
to Ninevah was because of their
wickedness, and because He cared for
them and wanted them to Repent. He
also had confidence that the people of
Ninevah would Hear the message and
Heed the message. He also knew Jonah
was capable to go and do. He had a plan
for Jonah and Jonah chose not to follow
the will of God and do his own will.
POSB note: Jonah 1:1–2 (POSB KJV Joe–
Na): They were a violent, bloodthirsty
people guilty of slaughtering so many
others that they were known as one of
the most cruel people ever to live on
earth (3:8; Na. 3:1–3).
They were an evil, sinful, wicked
people (3:8).
Exported from Logos Bible Software, 4:52 PM February 13, 2022.
5
They were a people full of lies and
deceit (Na. 3:1).
They were a people guilty of thievery
and plundering (Na. 3:1).
They were a people guilty of false
worship and of engaging in the world of
the occult and witchcraft (Na. 3:4).
The Lord desired for the people of
Ninevah to repent before him and turn
from their wicked ways and turn to Him.
This has not changed from then until
now.
• Repentance and Reception
The Lord desires people today to
repent, He is asking us to go and do. He
is confident that we can accomplish that
which He pleases.
Matthew 28:18–20 And Jesus came and
spake unto them, saying, All power is
given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all
things whatsoever I have commanded
you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even
unto the end of the world. Amen.

Verses on Repentance
Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus
began to preach, and to say, Repent: for
the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Mark 6:12 And they went out, and
preached that men should repent.
Luke 13:3 ,5 I tell you, Nay: but, except
ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
Rejection
Jonah 1:3 But Jonah rose up to flee
unto Tarshish from the presence of the
LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he
found a ship going to Tarshish: so he
paid the fare thereof, and went down
into it, to go with them unto Tarshish
from the presence of the LORD.
• Rejection of the Word of the Lord
• Has your father/dad/guardian ever told
you not to do something and you do it
anyway only to find out you did wrong. I
would hope that you felt bad after this.
• This is what happened to Jonah, he did
his own thing and not the will of the
father. Reminds me of the Prodigal son,

he did his own thing and it costed him
all he had.
• Based on Jonah 4:2 we can believe
that Jonah didn’t want the people to
repent of their wickedness, which leads
us to believe that maybe he wanted
them to perish
• That my friends is COLD - We should
never desire for someone to perish. That
would equate to us saying this person is
evil, wicked, and unsaved and I want
them to die and go to hell. We should
never think nor say anything of that
level. If we do, we need to asked God to
forgive us and repent of that.
• The Disciples wanted to call fire down
from heaven
Luke 9:54 And when his disciples James
and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt
thou that we command fire to come
down from heaven, and consume
them...
• Jesus then Rebuked them
Luke 9:56 For the Son of man is not

them.

John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into

that the world through him might be

John 12:47 And if any man hear my
words, and believe not, I judge him not:
for I came not to judge the world, but to
save the world.
1 Timothy 1:15 This is a faithful saying,
and worthy of all acceptation, that
Christ Jesus came into the world to save
sinners; of whom I am chief.

then you not do it. You have let them
down and I would hope that you would
feel bad for letting them down and it

• Not only did he reject the Lord, but he
rejected everything including his home
and country

presence?

reject the Call of God and why did he
reject God?
To me one of the saddest parts of this
story is he left the presence of God.
Adam hid from Gods presence, Jonah
fled from Gods presence, Christ abode
in the presence of God, where are you?
Few of us can throw stones at Jonah. We
all have more of this selfish spirit in us
that we would like to admit. We all like
grace when we benefit from it, but to
see our enemies or our competitors
experience grace is another story Butler

Butler wrote the Sovereign was
disturbed, the Sea was disturbed, the
Ship was disturbed, the Sailors were
disturbed, and the Shipmaster was
disturbed. I would say that this very
much sums up this chapter.

• Formation (of the Storm)
4 But the Lord sent out a great wind into
the sea, and there was a mighty tempest
in the sea, so that the ship was like to be
broken.

5 Then the mariners were afraid, and
cried every man unto his god, and cast
forth the wares that were in the ship into
the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah
was gone down into the sides of the ship;

and he lay, and was fast asleep. 6 So the
shipmaster came to him, and said unto
him, What meanest thou, O sleeper?
arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God
will think upon us, that we perish not. 7
And they said every one to his fellow,
Come, and let us cast lots, that we may
know for whose cause this evil is upon us.
So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon
Jonah. 8 Then said they unto him, Tell us,
we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is
upon us; What is thine occupation? and
whence comest thou? what is thy
country? and of what people art thou? 9
And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew;
and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven,
which hath made the sea and the dry
land. 10 Then were the men exceedingly
afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou
done this? For the men knew that he fled
from the presence of the Lord, because
he had told them.
• Jonah was not only asleep on the

11 Then said they unto him, What shall we
do unto thee, that the sea may be calm
unto us? for the sea wrought, and was
tempestuous. 12 And he said unto them,
Take me up, and cast me forth into the
sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for
I know that for my sake this great
tempest is upon you.
• Desperation
13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to
bring it to the land; but they could not:
for the sea wrought, and was
tempestuous against them. 14 Wherefore
they cried unto the Lord, and said, We
beseech thee, O Lord, we beseech thee,
let us not perish for this man’s life, and
lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou,
O Lord, hast done as it pleased thee.
• Concession
15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him
forth into the sea: and the sea ceased
from her raging.

17 Now the Lord had prepared a great fish
to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in
the belly of the fish three days and three
nights.
Reconciliation
Jonah 2:1–10
In my spiritual opinion this is the most
significant piece of the story of Jonah.
This is the turning point of his life, his
message, and also in the lives of the
people of Ninevah
• Reach out to the Lord and Reconcile
Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God
out of the fish’s belly, 2 And said, I cried by
reason of mine affliction unto the Lord,
and he heard me; Out of the belly of hell
cried I, and thou heardest my voice. 3 For
thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the

midst of the seas; And the floods
compassed me about: All thy billows and
thy waves passed over me.
It is at this point that the ball is in
Jonah’s court, he can continue on the
path that he is own and die, or he can
chose to reach out and reconcile. I am
happy that Jonah’s reached out to the
Lord and Reconciled.
It is at this point that Jonah’s sin had
taken him farther than he wanted to go,
kept him longer than he wanted to stay,
and it had costed him more than he
wanted to pay. Note that he had paid for
his sin upfront when he paid the fare,
however it costed him much more than
that.
If you are running from God and have
Rejected Him and left His presence your
return back to Him begins with
Reaching out to Him.

It is at this point he not only Reached
out to the Lord but also Returned to the
Lord. He took that step, this excites me.
Anytime someone returns to the Lord it
excites me.

• Remember the Lord and Reconcile
5 The waters compassed me about, even
to the soul: The depth closed me round
about, The weeds were wrapped about
my head. 6 I went down to the bottoms of
the mountains; The earth with her bars
was about me for ever: Yet hast thou

within me I remembered the Lord: And

I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.

Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a
broken spirit: A broken and a contrite

It is so sweet and amazing when we
witness someone reconcile with the
Lord. It reminds me of when the
Prodigal returned home the father saw
him when he was yet a great way off,
that wasn’t a coincidence, he was
watching for him. The father ran to him,
hugged him, kissed him, and loved him.
The father offers grace in our mistakes,
so does the Lord. Jonah messed up and
God forgave him and reconciled with
him. He will do the same for you today,
but you must return into His sight.
Repentance of the
Prophet
Jonah 3:1–4

Once Jonah was reconciled with God,
God gave him the opportunity to pickup
where he left off and continue the
mission. Jonah quit of God and
abandoned God but God accepted him
back and recommissioned him. Perhaps
you can relate to Jonah, God gave you a
job to do, perhaps you didn’t do it,
perhaps you began and quit and did not
finish the work. The Lord is giving you a
chance today to Reconcile with Him and
be Recommissioned to the work which
He has asked you to do.
• Repented
3 So Jonah arose, and went unto
Nineveh, according to the word of the
Lord.
For many years I misunderstood
‘repented’, I had thought it meant
coming before God and asking for
forgiveness. Repentance is not that, that
is Reconciling with God. Repentance is
when you turn from something or
change from the person or path that you
were on previously. Jonah now has

22
turned and traveling the path that God
had originally planned for him. I do
hope that you are traveling the path that
God planned for you, friend if you are
not, you need to Reconcile with God
today and Repent to travel His path.
Not that sometimes the Path back to the
will of God is a long and difficult road.
Here is Jonah got as much as 600 miles
to travel to be able to share the message
of the Lord. There will be obstacles to
overcome, The greatest of those
obstacles is satan and second is self. The
devil does not want anyone to return to
the Lord and reconcile to Him. The devil
will give you reasons, excuses,
alternatives, and barriers to following
the Lord. But “greater is He that is in you
than He that is in the world”
• Reached out to the People
Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city
of three days’ journey. 4 And Jonah began
to enter into the city a day’s journey, and
he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and
Nineveh shall be overthrown.

It is a special kind of feeling to be
fulfilling the will of God, finishing the
commission that He has called you to
do. You can sit down in a moment of still
and think, this just feels right. No matter
how large or small the task might be it is
all special and significant to the Lord. It
matters, you matter. When you Find,
Follow, Fulfill the will of God do it with
all of your heart until you Finish the will
of God for your life.
Let me Encourage you to find the will of
God for your life, follow the will of God
for your life, fulfill the will of God for
your life, and Finish the will of God for
your life.
Matthew 28:18–20 And Jesus came and
spake unto them, saying, All power is
given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father,

Repentance of the People
Jonah 3:5–10
• Reception
So the people of Nineveh believed God
Here is something perhaps
shocking....He preached repent and
turned to the Lord and they did it. I
might have been like ole Fred Sanford at
that time, thinking I was having the big
one. I don’t know that he expected or
even wanted them to believe. I am not
sure he was doing this whole-heartedly.
What we don’t see sometimes is that
behind the scenes sometimes the Lord
is working behind the scene’s preparing
the people to hear his word and heed
his word.
• Repentance of the People
and proclaimed a fast, and put on
sackcloth, from the greatest of them even
to the least of them. 6 For word came
unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose
from his throne, and he laid his robe from
him, and covered him with sackcloth, and
sat in ashes. 7 And he caused it to be

proclaimed and published through
Nineveh by the decree of the king and his
nobles, saying, Let neither man nor
beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let
them not feed, nor drink water: 8 But let
man and beast be covered with
sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God:
yea, let them turn every one from his evil
way, and from the violence that is in their
hands. 9 Who can tell if God will turn and
repent, and turn away from his fierce
anger, that we perish not?
This is an amazing turn in this story, the
people not only believed in God but
they changed and turned to God. They
changed their lives, this is evidence, this
shows the world that they were
genuine.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man
be in Christ, he is a new creature: old
things are passed away; behold, all
things are become new.

and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O
house of Israel?
Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart also will I give
you, and a new spirit will I put within you:
and I will take away the stony heart out
of your flesh, and I will give you an heart
of flesh.
• Repentance of God
10 And God saw their works, that they
turned from their evil way; and God
repented of the evil, that he had said that
he would do unto them; and he did it not.
It is important to understand this, this is
not saying God made a mistake as God
has never made a mistake but what it is
saying is that God changed from
destroying them as He did the world in
Gen 6, and Sodom and Gomorrah
Many of us run in circles because of our
disobedience, only to wish that we
would have just heard and have Heeded
to begin with. The Children of Israel

of having a journey that was only a
couple weeks. How long will you
wander in your disobedience?
If one wants to do the will of God, he
must give priority to the Word of God.
Cultural habits, contemporary trends,
natural reasonings, and fleshly passions
often demand first place in life; but the
Word of God must be honored above all
these things if the will of God is going to
be done. - Butler
