Introduction:

I. Growing up with brothers I was always told that there is right way and a wrong way to deal with them.
II. Likewise, there is a right way and a wrong way to live our lives.
III. The Bible lays it our for us again and again, but for this lesson we are going to look at what the writer of the first psalm says about living a righteous life.

Body:

I. We cannot be like everyone else in the world. (Psa. 1:1)
A. We cannot walk in the way of the ungodly. (Psa. 1:1)
1. We often say that bad company corrupt good morals and it’s so true. (1 Cor. 15:33)
2. When we choose to surround ourselves with ungodly people, we put ourselves in situations where we are going to have to deal with more temptations. (Job 2:9-10)
3. Peer pressure as childish as it may sound is a very real thing, and who we choose to be around influences our mentality and lives. (2 Cor. 6:14)
B. Stand not in the way of sinners. (Psa. 1:1)
1. We have all sinned and been on that path at one point or another. (Rom. 3:23)
2. For us Christians though we are supposed to put away that part of our lives. (Rom. 6:1-4)
3. Now our lives will and should exemplify who we choose to serve. (Rom. 6:16-17)
C. Sit not in the seat of the scornful. (Psa. 1:1)
1. The Hebrew word for scorning could be more accurately defined as to make a mockery or to sit in judgement over according to Strong’s Hebrew Dictionary #3890
2. It is prideful to take your opinion and judge others with it. (Mt. 7:1-2)
3. We can only judge with a righteous judgement. (Jn. 7:24)
II. We must live and devote our life for the Lord. (Psa. 1:2-3)
A. His law should be the focus.
1. The Israelites read the Law of the Lord every seven years. (Du. 31:10-11)
2. This was so that they could hear, learn, and fear the Lord. (Du. 31:12-13)
3. How often is God’s law the focus in our lives?
B. We need to be studying his law “day and night.” (Ps. 1:2)
1. Why do we need get into the word of God? (2 Tim. 2:15)
2. We can only grow in faith from the word. (Rom. 10:17)
3. Through study we can defend our faith better. (1 Pet. 3:15)
C. Bringing forth fruit. (Ps. 1:3)
1. Jesus calls us to spread the gospel. (Mt. 28:18-20)
2. When we learn and spread the gospel, we are planting the seed for that good fruit. (Mt. 13:3-9)
3. If we live for God he will grow the fruit, we sow. (1 Cor. 3:5-7)

Conclusion:

I. Our only options are either we are for God, or we are against him.
II. There is no spiritual Switzerland.
III. Choose this day who you will serve. (Deut 30:19-20)
IV. Choose life for yourselves. (Acts 2:36-39)
