What does it mean to be saved? What are we saved from?
To be saved means to be rescued. What we are rescued from is hell. Everyone dies, but that is not where life ends. We have an afterlife, and there is two places that you can go. You will either go to heaven, or you will go to hell. Those who are saved go to heaven. Those who are lost, they go to hell.
Why do people go to hell? In Romans 3:23 the bible tells us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”. This means that every person is a sinner, and every person is doomed for hell.
How would a person be rescued from their sin? In Romans 6:23 the bible says that “the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The price for our sins is death, hell, and we have already mentioned that every single person sins and all are doomed. What is interesting is that God does not want people to go to hell even though we have made all kinds of mistakes. God has given us eternal life as a gift. Like a birthday present. He did this through Jesus Christ. John 3:16 ““For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Romans 5:8 “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” God loves us even though we make mistakes. Jesus loves us, and He has given His life for us so that we can have eternal life in heaven. Escaping the hell that we deserve.
How do we accept this free gift of eternal life that Jesus offers us?
We first understand that Jesus is the Son of God. He lived in heaven, He came down in the form of a man, and lived among us. John 1:1 “In the beginning was the [Jesus], and the [Jesus] was with God, and [Jesus] was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.” John 1:14 “And the [Jesus] became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Jesus lived a perfect life, which we cannot, and He gave His life as a sacrifice for us. He died the death that we deserved so that we could live the life, eternal life, that we would never be able to have otherwise. Then when He was buried He was resurrected three days later. He raised Himself from the dead and is now alive in heave. Waiting for those who who have placed their trust in Him.
All we have to do is place our trust in Jesus as our Savior. We trust that Jesus is the Son of God. We trust that He lived a perfect life, died in our place, and has risen from the grave, and now sits in heaven. We place our trust in the fact that Jesus has what it takes to save us through His sacrifice. If we place our trust in that, and that alone, we will have eternal life. We will be saved.
Romans 10:9-10 “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”
In our hearts we trust Him. With our mouths we share that Jesus is Lord. An outward expression of an inward change.
