What a great question. How wonderful that you are asking it.
It’s exciting because it tells me that God may be drawing you to Him. Do you sense that?
Praise the Lord. Well here is what He wants you to know.
Becoming a Christian is an act of faith and it starts by admitting that you are separated from God.
And that separation is caused by your sin.
Isa 59:2
In the Creation story in Genesis, Adam and Eve spent time with God in the garden.
They walked with Him in the cool of the day (Gen 3:8) until they sinned.
Then they were sent out of the garden (out of His presence)
From that day on, fallen man cannot be in the presence of God because of sin.
And not their sin only, but we sin every day. We are just as guilty as they were.
Read Rm 3:23
So we are also alienated from God because of our sin.
In fact, we read in Rm 6:23 that "the wages of sin is death”
And, in that death we are eternally separated from God.
In and of ourselves there is nothing we can do to fix it. No matter how hard we try or how good we are.
But here is the Good News, God loves us and gave us a way to be restored.
You are probably familiar with John 3:16
John 3:16 NASB95
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
If you are like most people, that verse is very hopeful. But what does it mean? What are we to believe in Him for?
He died on the cross to save us, right? But why did He have to die?
Well, God’s way for us to be restored was established in the Old Testament, through the sacrificial system.
Israel had to make blood sacrifices to God. Every day they had to make sacrifices.
And then once a year, on Atonement Day, they sacrifice a lamb without blemish.
But the sacrificial system of bulls and goats was only a picture of the one sacrifice that would make true redemption possible
Heb 9:12-14
So then, if we look to Christ on the Cross, believing that His sacrifice will save us, then we are restored.
Read Rm 5:6-9
So, becoming a Christian is simply recognizing that your sin has created an uncrossable divide between you and God.
And that this separation means that you will spend eternity in hell, not in heaven.
And when the weight of that burden is too much to bear, then asking His Son Jesus Christ to save you.
Rm 10:9-10
Do you recognize the separation between you and God?
Do you accept that it is your sin that caused it?
Are you ready to confess your sins and ask Jesus to save you?
