Dictionary = self control, self restraint = If you could do that you wouldn't need a Savior
Temperance is a Spirit Controlled life
Zechariah 4:6 KJV 1900
6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, Saith the Lord of hosts.
At the end of yourself you’ll find the Lord
Spirit Control = Allowing the Holy Spirit to hold your passions and desires in check.
Temperance is the foundation of fruitful Christian service.
With temperance we do not serve ourselves, we are morally and spiritually free to serve others in love, thus laying up eternal treasure.
Temperance is the door that must be opened in order to walk into a life of investing in eternal value.
Galatians 5:13 KJV 1900
13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
There is no reward for working in the power of the flesh - no rewards for work done in the power of the flesh
The Spirit must control you in order for you to perform anything of eternal value
Spirit filled giving = asking God what to give
Turn to:
Matthew 6:19–21 KJV 1900
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
We think this is talking about just money
Everything you do in the Spirit goes directly to heaven
Before you walk in the church you should be spirit filled
We never have a right to walk in the flesh
I want to not just be the best I can be I want to be the best He can make me to be
Not just love people because I’m a pastor
I want spirit filled love to affect people through me.
I want people to be better because they were around me.
A Spirit controlled believer will begin to lay down things that have no eternal value.
I have to give something up for God… -
When the Spirit is working in your life, you’ll want to give it up
Everything will come under the light of is this eternal or temporary.
A temperate child of God filters his actions through the will of God by examining the Word of God and asking the Spirit of God. Everything is brought under the control of The Lord.

Turn to:
Hebrews 12:1 KJV 1900
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Lay aside weights - putting on the Lord Jesus
Putting off and putting on
Hebrews 12:2 KJV 1900
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 11:24 KJV 1900
24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;
We are not children of this world.
Hebrews 11:25 KJV 1900
25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
Moses chose affliction over pleasure
He gave up his identity and pleasure of sin
The temperate child of God chooses to identify with God rather that sin
The threats against christianity are growing.
I would rather suffer with God and his people
Hebrews 11:26 KJV 1900
26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
Being reproached with Christ was valuable to Moses
Hebrews 11:27 KJV 1900
27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
We need to touch a hurting world but be separated from the worlds philosophies
The temperate believer realizes victory and use as a clean vessel for the Master involves living free of carnal entanglements, addictions, and distractions.
Small distractions can hinder you from God’s best and adding eternal value.
Allow yourself to be purged of stuff
The temperate believer will purge the meaningless from his life.
how many hours of wasted time?
4 hrs - usually 6hrs
The temperate believer is an arrow of light piercing the kingdom of darkness and a sharp sword in the hand of God.
Romans 6:13 KJV 1900
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
When you fail spiritually, you are an instrument or weapon of unrighteousness - the world becomes darker
When you are victorious spiritually, you are an instrument or weapon of light - you make the world a brighter place
all your members yielded to God as a weapon
A forged weapon against the kingdom of darkness
There is no other agency or force that can make a difference in this world for righteousness.
Politics, education,
It’s when you allow yourself to be put in the fire to be forged to change your world for Christ
As you touch your world and I touch my world eventually they start to touch
The temperate believer has yielded his feet, hands, ears, eyes, mind, and his emotions to God. His being is given holy and acceptable to God which is his reasonable service.
You are not your own anymore. Why do you control you.
My body is the living temple of God.
That’s my logical service to God.
God deserves everything.
A Spirit controlled life - God owns everything
Colossians 3:1–2 KJV 1900
1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
1 Corinthians 9:24–27 KJV 1900
24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. 25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. 26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
Giving everything when you run
It’s a battle cry
not as uncertainly - there is a purpose
into subjection - Under the Spirit
If I dont opperate in the Spirit = castaway - not used
Driven
Directed
Navigated - By the Spirit
I dislike being lost
God wants to direct us in the direction
Yes Father
NOt a ticking time bomb
Not emotionally unstable
people arent afraid of him
The Spirit control the temperate believer and the lust of the flesh is not fulfilled.
When one dies to self daily and yields to Christ temperance is being added.
