What do these things have in common
Expanding pack towels
Tom Brady
Mustard seeds
Ghost Chili
These are small things unsuspecting things that turn into greatness
Expanding pack towels these little pucks with just some water the turn into full blown towels good for washing dishes hand cleaning and drying
Tom Brady the 199th pick in the 200 draft
in the 6th round
No body wanted him
He is the three greatest quartbacks to ever play the game
Mustard seeds
Small trivial seeds grown into massive fields of yellow flowers
Ghost chili
Small little pepper
That puts people in the hospital
All of these things something we cant quite explain
Im sure there is some science as to why the pack towel work
Some things that made tom brady great
Some plant science as to why from a little seed a big plant can grow
and what chemical properties make a ghost chili so spicy
But we dont necessarily know all of that its a mystery which is what makes us interested in them
We will see this today as we finish this section of parables
This mystery of the kingdom of God
If we remember Jesus is taking us through these parables to show us something to use everyday things to help us grasp eternal truths
And here he wants us to understand the kingdom of God
This is something that many Jews of the time would be most interested
They know that this coming of the kingdom means freedom and liberation for them
They look forward to this
Jesus is resetting their expectations
Read Mark 4:26-34
26 And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. 27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. 28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.” 30 And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.” 33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it. 34 He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.
First we must remember that the kingdom of God is not something new that Jesus is talking about
Read Mark 1:14-15
14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Jesus has been preaching the Kingdom of God is at hand
This would be a bit of mystery to those hearing becasue they dont see their warrior king that would come free them
They are wondering where is this King that will usher in this Kingdom
So here Jesus is resetting making new giving new revelation about the kingdom of God
And he will do this in the style of parable
He wants to understand a few things about the kingdom of God
It is ordinarily accessable
It does not require our input
It is growing
It is ordinarily accessible
It is ordinarily accessible
Read Mark 4:26
26 And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground.
Read Mark 4:30-31
30 And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth,
Jesus uses these seeds to symbolize the kingdom
Why doesnt he use something grand and worthy of the greatness of the kingdom of God
Because they already see it as grand
They need to see it as accessible
So he uses an ordinary thing to describe it
It is describes as a seed scattered on the ground
Remember from the parable of the sower the seed is scattered everywhere
Only some spots does it take root
The kingdom is available everywhere
these are different seeds in the sower it is the word here it is the kingdom of God
But the theme remains it is spread out and made accessible for us
The kingdom of God is something great but also something near
This is the mystery of God
The very thing we must wrestle with how can something so great and unattainable as God as his Kingdom
Be brought near to us be made accessible to us
The great mystery
But remember all things will be made manifest in due time
It will not require our input
It will not require our input
Read Mark 4:27-28
27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. 28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.
Read Mark 4:31-32
31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”
We wont understand everything that about the kingdom of God
But thats ok because it will grow and prosper without us
Just as plants grow without our knowledge so to does the Kingdom
It is growing
It is growing
Read Mark 4:29
29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
Read Mark 4:32
32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”
It will win
It is the christians greatest hope and the sinners greatest fear
