Outline of Ruth

RUTH- a item of additional materials to Judges)
Ruth could be tide in with Judges
Author :
Who wrote the book of Ruth ?
Most Scholars believe Possibly Samuel (Though some say its not likely because Samuel was dead before David was crowned king ) (4:17,22) ( at the end of the book theres a reference to David ) Some say Hezekiah Ezra Gad Nathan
Date :
1000 B.C.
Title of the Book :
The book of Ruth gets its name from one of its main characters , a young woman of Moab, the great grandmother of David and one who’s is in the genealogical line of the Savior (Matt 1:5) .
Ruth and Esther are the only two books name after women .
Esther was a Hebrew women who married a gentile king .
Ruth was a gentile women who married a prosperous Hebrew farmer.
Ruth being a moabite came from a perverted back ground the oldest daughter of Lot has bore the line of Moabites Gen 19:30-38 She comes from a line of incest.
Theme and Purpose :
Ruth is the story of a couple in Israel who, during a time of famine , moved to Moab. There the husband ( Elimelech) and his two sons ( Mahlon, Chilion) died , leaving the mother (Naomi alone with her two daughters- in - law ( Orpah and Ruth .) Naomi decided to move back to Israel and Ruth insisted on Returning with her . Once in Israel, they turned to a relative by the name of Boaz for help. Eventually, Ruth married Boaz .
Ruth is the story of loyalty , purity , and love in a day of anarchy ( a state of disorder due to absence or nonrecognition of authority ) ,selfishness, and depravity was generally the rule.
But Ruth possessed all of those qualities. The world was going one way and Ruth went in opposition to the worlds statements.
Ruth 1:16 - Wherever you go I go , wherever ever you live I will live , and thy God my God . Ruth serves as a positive picture of faith and obedience in the midst of apostasy and shows how such faith brings blessing .
Even though Naomi said “the hand of The Lord is gone out against me” Ruth decided to follow Naomi.Ruth 1:13
Other purposes of Ruth are seen in the way it illustrates the truths of the Kinsman- Redeemer, the presence of a godly remnant even in times of great apostasy , and God’s faithfulness to those who will walk with Him by faith (. You have wicked and perverse generation in Jesus times , Jesus called them an adulteress generation but Jesus was the remnant of that time ) Ruth was a remnant of God in her time . And in the fullness of time Jesus was a remnant in His time. Since Ruth was a gentile , the book illustrates Gods’s desire to bring the Gentile world in the family of God . ( Moabites )
Because Ruth was a Moabitess she wasn’t apart of the Israelist by blood. But because of her faith and obedience to God and toward Naomi God counted her worthy to be apart of the genealogy of Jesus .
Naomi didn’t want to be called Naomi but she wanted to be called Mara- which means bitter Naomi means pleasant .
Key Words :
Kinsman (14 times ), Redeem (9 times ), in though a key term would be Kinsman - Redeemer .
Key verses :
(Ruths commitment to Naomi )1:15-17- Then she said , “Behold your sister-in law has gone back to her people and her gods; return after your sister - in - law ,” 16 Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you; for where you go, i will go, and where you lodge , I will lodge . your people shall be my people, and your God , my God . 17 Where you , die , I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus may the Lord do to me , and worse , if anything but death parts you and me. ( Boaz Promises to redeem Ruth ) 3:11-13 - ‘ And now , my daughter , do not fear, I will do for you whatever you ask, for all my people in the city know that you are a women of excellence . 12 And now it is true I am a close relative; however , there is a relative closer than I. 13 Remain this night, and when morning comes, if he will redeem you, good; let him redeem you. but if he does not wish to redeem you, then I will redeem you, as the Lord lives . Lie down until morning.’
Key Chapters :
Chapter 1 : is a key chapter because it demonstrates Ruth’s decision of faith, devotion ,and commitment to stay with Naomi, a decision that led to her redemption.
Chapter 4: is another key chapter because in this chapter , Ruth goes from being a widow and proverty to marriage and wealth through the Kinsman- Redeemer . Which was Boaz
Christ as seen in Ruth :
In the OT, if a person or an estate were sold into bondage , they could be redeemed if certain requirements were met is called the Kinsman- Redeemer or goel, “ close relative.” This is a perfect illustration of the receptive work of the Savior .
What is kinsman redeemer ?
Deut 25:5 ““If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the widow of the dead man shall not be married to a stranger outside the family; her husband’s brother shall go in to her, take her as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.”
Deut 25:7-10 “But if the man does not want to take his brother’s wife, then let his brother’s wife go up to the gate to the elders, and say, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to raise up a name to his brother in Israel; he will not perform the duty of my husband’s brother.’ Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak to him. But if he stands firm and says, ‘I do not want to take her,’ then his brother’s wife shall come to him in the presence of the elders, remove his sandal from his foot, spit in his face, and answer and say, ‘So shall it be done to the man who will not build up his brother’s house.’ And his name shall be called in Israel, ‘The house of him who had his sandal removed.’”
Both these things happened in the story of Ruth.
The closer relative did not want to redeem Ruth because it would ruin his own inheritance Ruth 4:6 “And the close relative said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I ruin my own inheritance. You redeem my right of redemption for yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”
And the confirmation of redeeming and exchanging was the taking off of one sandal and giving it to the other .
These are qualification of the kinsman redeemer and its relation to Christ as our Kinsman redeemer.

but Boaz’ supreme act of virtue is not his marriage to Ruth, but rather his willingness to inform the nearer kinsman of his rights. By this gesture Boaz was setting aside his personal desires for the requirements of the covenant law

Ruth 3:12 “Now it is true that I am a close relative; however, there is a relative closer than I.”
1. He must be a blood relative (a kinsman) of those he redeems ( Deut 25:5, 7-10;
Jesus was blood relative of Israel and The Father John 1:14 ( the only begotten of The Father) (Couldn’t be an angel) , Roman 1:3( Jesus was the apart of the seed of David ); Phil. 2:5-8; Hebrews 2:14-15 “Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”
2. Be able to pay the price of redemption ( Ruth 2:1 “There was a relative of Naomi’s husband, a man of great wealth ( He was a farmer) , of the family of Elimelech. His name was Boaz.” ( a mighty man of wealth ) 1 Peter 1:18-19 (The payment for mans redemption had to be spotless and without blemish )
3. Be willing to pay the price
Boaz was willing ( Ruth 3:11 “And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you request, for all the people of my town know that you are a virtuous woman.” (boaz was willing to redeem Ruth );
Jesus was willing Matt 20:28 “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”” ; John 10:15 “As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.” , John 10:18 “No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”” ;Hebrews 10:7 )
4. Must be free himself , as Christ was free from the curse of sin, being without sin. You cant redeem if you’re in bondage yourself , you cant pay for sins if your in debt . ( 2 Cor 5:21; 1 Peter 2:22; 1 John 3:5)
