Intro
Text - 1 John 2.1
Title - Our Defense Against Sin
Issues
Can a man that is born in sin live a sinless life?
How do we handle our daily battle against sin?
How can we defend oursleves from committing sin again?
Interesting Thoughts
Christian struggle against sin is a real, daily, battle
different Christian views on sin and salvation
RCC - daily confession of sins to a priest, followed by penitence, for salvation
Reformers - daily confession of sins, because a justified person is still asinner
Holiness movement - deliverance from sin’s power by the Holy Spirit
Endtime believers (extreme) - a denial of sin’s reality
being “righteous” (opposite of sinner) does not mean we can no longer commit sin
Ecclesiastes 7.20 “20 For there is not a just man on earth who does good And does not sin.”
committing sin does not revert a “righteous’ to becoming a “sinner” again
there is a difference between “committing a sin” and “continuing in sin”
Christians should not lose focus on winning the battle against sin - this is the most important victory in the Christian life.
a Christian who has achieved greatness in his/her finances, education, family, and even ministry, but loses the battle against sin, is still a loser!
overcome the world - it means to defeat the dominating power of sin
faith - one of its key purpose in our life is to overcome the power that controls the world - sin!
Jesus wants us to be free from sin
its guilt (from past action)
its dominating power (present)
its judgment (future)
Jesus, our Advocate in heaven
Our first line of defense in Jesus Himself!
His being our Advocate means -
He represents us before God in heaven in times when we commit sin
if a Christian sins, Jesus Christ the Righteous is his/her “Advocate”
advocate - a person who acts as someone’s spokesperson or representative, esp before a judge in the court of law
a lawyer; attorney; legal counsel
He secures our life from going back to sinful living!
A born-again person does not continue in sin
“does not sin” - literally, “does not continue in sin”
“cannot” sin - literally, “has no strength to continue on committing sin”
the new birth experiences is freedom from sinful living
a child of God has no stomach to live in sin
The Word of God
God spoke in person to Israel -
King David recognized the power of God’s Word to keep him from sin
Psalm 119:11–16 (NKJV)
11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.
12 Blessed are You, O Lord! Teach me Your statutes.
13 With my lips I have declared All the judgments of Your mouth.
14 I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on Your precepts, And contemplate Your ways.
16 I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.
a Christian who does not read and study God’s word will have no defense against sin!
Our Conscience
the heart - inner man, the seat of the will, imagination and conscience
the conscience either accuses or excuses our actions
to regard iniquity is to keep it, ignoring the call of conscience
The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is Christ in us
The Holy Spirit is grieved when we commit sin
How do we recognize grievance of the Holy Spirit -
it convicts us of sin
How can the Holy Spirit defend us from sins power?
when we walk according to the Spirit , it fills our life with the things of GOD
