Psalm 98 is a wonderful Psalm that focuses completely on the praise of the Lord God.
Many of the psalms that we have studied so far have dealt with sin, defeat, loneliness, etc.
But today it is only joyful exuberance of praise.
One commentator said, “It is a noisy, effervescent song from its beginning to the end.”
The Psalm can be divided into three parts, each focusing on an ever expanding reach of audience.
But since the focus is on the Lord, not the audience, I have followed a well known outline of this Psalm.
God the Savior v. 1-3
God the King v. 4-6
God the Judge v. 7-9
So let’s look at this Psalm together.
I. God the Savior
v. 1-3
The psalmist calls for a new song to be sung for the Lord.
A new song creates a freshness of praise.
The first audience is the nation of Israel.
The Psalmist calls the nation to praise the Lord for all the marvellous things that God has done for them.
A. Victory for the Nation
His right hand - hand of strength
Holy Arm - Always righteous
Friend in Bible College had massive arms.
One time some teenage thugs were beginning to cause some trouble, he took off his baggy coat and stretched and sat next to them.
They were quiet the rest of the activity.
B. Salvation for the Nation
verse 2
Not only has the LORD saved them from their physical enemies, but he has made known His plan for saving their souls.
His righteousness is shown to the heathen
And in the end, he will be victorious over all the earth!
But for the people who follow him, they find Mercy and truth!
vs 3
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
All nations will worship before him!
II.
God the King
4-6
The audience has now shifted from the nation of Israel to the whole earth.
The Psalmist calls on the earth to make a joyful noise to the Lord.
He calls the whole earth to praise God using:
A. Their voices
joyful noise - shout of triumph (shouting in LA this weekend b/c of Superbowl)
loud noise - Still a loud shouting forth, but now in song.
The verb means to break or shatter something.
rejoice - literally sing joyfully
sing - to offer praise with your voice as an instrument.
B. Instruments
O how important it is to use your talents for the Lord on a regular basis!
Whether in private or in a public forum, if you play an instrument use it for the Lord!
Mentioned here, is the harp, trumpet and cornet, but any instrument can be used to praise the Lord!
III.
God the Judge
7-9
The audience is widened even further to all of creation.
No longer is it up to just His people to praise Him, no longer is it up to the nations of all lands.
But now all of nature is called upon to praise Him!
Jesus knew, when He was on earth, if they people didn’t praise God, all of creation would!
The sea will roar - and all that is is in it.
The earth itself and all that is in it.
- land animals
The floods - the rivers - will clap their hands
hills - can refer to hills or mountains - will sing together
Why
because the Lord cometh to judge the earth
After millennia under the curse, the once perfect world will rejoice that their righteous judge and creator has come to judge the earth.
Righteousness will once again be upon the earth.
Righteousness - sedeq - right relation to a legal standard
Leaders today lead according to their own standard, but when Christ rules and reigns on this earth it will be the only true standard - God’s truth!
The result - He will judge the people with equity - perfectly just government.
I heard a song this week that I thought I would share.
It’s called Creation Sings
