Sin
Last week we talked about the glorious gift of salvation
We talked about all of the benefits that we received
We talked about how our lives now should reflect the gift we received
I want to back up a bit and talk about what caused the problem in the first place!
Sin
When most people think about sin they think about a list of things that they shouldn’t be doing
While we need to qualify what sin is, the list of things not to do is only a list of symptoms showing that a disease is present
If we want to cure the patient we need to know the source of the infection!
The Greek word Harmatia means to miss the mark!
There is an interesting verse in the book of Genesis
There are two interesting words in this verse, crouching and eager
The word crouching is the word meaning to wait but ready for action.
It is the position of a sniper patiently waiting for the right moment to strike!
The word eager is actually the word desire.
It indicates an intent on action.
It is used to describe sexual attraction or the intention of a ruler to dominate
It indicates that sin is an active force, alive and wanting to dominate our lives
Like all sin, sin has insatiable appetite that can never be filled!
This is why it is important that we know that the Word of God is also alive
That is why Jesus responded to Satan’s temptations!
The only power over Satan is the Word of God!
Now, we could list a multitude of actions that constitutes sin but I am a simple guy and need a simple explanation
God has set a standard for our lives which can be found in His Word.
When we do not live up to that we “miss the mark”
Like an archer who takes aim at the target but fails to hit the bulls eye!
As we learned last week, salvation gave us the freedom now to “not sin” and “hit the mark” of God’s call in our lives
When we sin it brings a seperation in pur relationship with the Father
We must realize that as long as we have this body we will be plagued by sin
There is something refreshing about confessions
It brings us face-to-face with the reality of this life, we are sinners saved by grace lest any of us should boast!
I love the hope of these verses from Romans
When caught in his sin David asked God to look at his heart!
I am thankful today that God knows my heart and forgives me my sin!
The result of sin is death
The result of salvation is life
