11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

But Christ
Signifies a SHARP CONTRAST between the earthly tabernacle’s limitations and the Messiah’s redemptive work
Appeared
Entrance into the heavenly sanctuary after his resurrection work
Good things that have come
Association with the new covenant
Then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation)
Then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation)
Not made with hands
Contrasting the earthly tabernacle that was made by hands
5 They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.”
Not of this creation
The heavenly tabernacle was not a part of God’s creation and thus not subject to death and decay
He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves
He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves
Entered once for all
For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.
Holy places
The very presence of God as symbolically revealed in the tabernacle
Blood of goats and calves
Reference to the Day of Atonement - Leviticus 16
But by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
But by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
His own blood
On the Day of Atonement the blood of goats and calves would have been spilt for sins, but at the cross it was Jesus’ own blood
Blood was not literally brought into heaven, but Christ offered His life as a sacrifice
Eternal redemption
Liberation from an oppressive situation
Ransomed or released
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Redemption from the limitations that did not perfect the conscience of the worshiper

Hebrews 9:13-14 - The Blood of Christ Purifies
13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Blood of goats and bulls
And he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat on the east side, and in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.
“Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it over the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat. Thus he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleannesses of the people of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins. And so he shall do for the tent of meeting, which dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses.
Defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer
2 “This is the statute of the law that the Lord has commanded: Tell the people of Israel to bring you a red heifer without defect, in which there is no blemish, and on which a yoke has never come.
17 For the unclean they shall take some ashes of the burnt sin offering, and fresh water shall be added in a vessel. 18 Then a clean person shall take hyssop and dip it in the water and sprinkle it on the tent and on all the furnishings and on the persons who were there and on whoever touched the bone, or the slain or the dead or the grave. 19 And the clean person shall sprinkle it on the unclean on the third day and on the seventh day. Thus on the seventh day he shall cleanse him, and he shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water, and at evening he shall be clean.
Laws for purification when coming in contact with a dead body
Sanctify for the purification of the flesh
How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God,
How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God,
Behind the second curtain was a second section called the Most Holy Place, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron’s staff that budded, and the tablets of the covenant. Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.
And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.
Eternal Spirit
The Holy Spirit empowered Christ for His sacrifice
Luke makes multiple notes of Jesus being empowered by the Holy Spirit
35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.
1 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness
21 In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
Without blemish to God
OT sacrifices were physically unblemished
1 “You shall not sacrifice to the Lord your God an ox or a sheep in which is a blemish, any defect whatever, for that is an abomination to the Lord your God.
Christ was morally pure without sin
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
Purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
Purify our conscience
Removal of sin from the heart - the internal
Dead works
Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,
For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Serve the living God
Outflow of a forgiven life
Not simply the Levitical priests
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
