1. What makes you confident that God's on your side?
a. Jews boasted in knowing and teaching God's will. Romans 2:17-20; Jeremiah 9:23-24
Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God, and know His will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law, and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and truth in the law.
Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the Lord.
b. Jews were unaware of their own slavery to sin. Romans 1:16-17; John 8:31-36
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”
Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
c. Rule of faith removes boasting. Romans 3:27
Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.
i. Paul previously demonstrated that their inability to follow God's law brought them under condemnation (Romans 2:23), now Paul is challenging their boasting about their position as God's covenant people.
You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law?
2. There is only one God.
a. The Jew's rest and confidence. Deuteronomy 6:4
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!
i. Rome was polytheistic.
ii. Jews daily prayer.
b. God is the God of the Gentiles also. Romans 3:29-30; Genesis 12:1–3
Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.
Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
i. Both Jews and Gentiles are under sin.
ii. Both can only be justified by faith.
iii. Gentiles were always in God’s view from the beginning.
3. Does faith make the law void?
a. The law as a system of righteousness. Romans 2:4–10; Romans 3:19–20
Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
b. The law as a revelation of God’s righteousness. Romans 3:31; Romans 10:1-3
Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.
Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.
