LIKE LIVING STONES

SLIDE 1 “LIKE LIVING STONES”
Jesus asked His disciples “who do people say that I am?”
Peter answered you are the Christ the Son of the Living God
Blessed are you Simon Barjona
Flesh and Blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father in heaven
And then Jesus makes this profound statement
SLIDE 2 Matthew 16:18
Matthew 16:18 NASB95
18 “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
First thing is Jesus reveals Peters true identity / Simon (son of Barjona - means “son of Jonah”)
You are Peter (Petras- means rock)
I will build My church
gates of hell will not overpower it
Before this event, He just fed the 5000, Jesus pointing out some things in feeding the people. Tells His disciples beware of the leaven of the Pharisees
SLIDE 3
JESUS PREPARES HIS CHURCH
*Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees
*Rebukes for human understanding
*Revelation from the Father / Holy Spirit
*Identity in Christ
*Built on faith and the Word (Christ)
*Hell will not overpower His church
SLIDE 4 “LIKE LIVING STONES”
Other note worthy - first time church is mentioned in NT
From this passage on - Peter never refers to himself as “the rock”
All this being the prelude for our titled message for today “Like Living Stones”
The Holy Spirit does a masterful job of bringing all the truth from the passages we were just in and bringing even more revelation in the book of 1st Peter
SLIDE 5
1 Peter 2:4–5 (NASB95)
4 And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God,
5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
The Holy Spirit is revealing here the true makeup of the church (the true formula for the church) Unshakable unwavering make up of the church
This is so encouraging for us today - a reminder that we didn’t just wake up and say “I gotta go to church”
He just talked about those attitudes in the first 3 verses
Remember Jesus’ first points Matthew 16 were ......
SLIDE 6
JESUS PREPARES HIS CHURCH
*Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees
(righteousness seen as evil)
*Rebukes for human understanding
(not seen like the world sees)
Peter just covers what the leaven of Pharisees and human understanding looks like - its brilliant how scripture backs up scripture, lets look!
SLIDE 7
1 Peter 2:1–3 NASB95
1 Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, 2 like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, 3 if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.
Peter is saying, “look wake up, pinch yourself, this is not you, you are the church and I’m going to point out who you are!!
SLIDE 8
1 Peter 2:4–5 (NASB95)
4 And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God,
5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
We are not just stones laying around everywhere
Stones had many uses in the bible - stones were everywhere
They were used for building material , weaponry or throwing (stoning), writing material, weights (for presses and measuring), Jacob used one for a pillow - monuments
We have come to Jesus (the living stone) and look everything is built on Him
We are continually being built on Jesus (the true living stone)
and so now we are living stones (not just laying everywhere for many uses like before)
Look at verse 5 “we are living stones being built up as a spiritual house and holy priesthood
and to do what? “offer up spiritual sacrifices to God through Christ
Hang on to the spiritual sacrifices
Firstly Peter lays out the true foundation we are building the church on
SLIDE 9
1 Peter 2:6 NASB95
6 For this is contained in Scripture: Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, And he who believes in Him will not be disappointed.”
SLIDE 10
1 Peter 2:7 NASB95
7 This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, The stone which the builders rejected, This became the very corner stone,
SLIDE 11
1 Peter 2:8 NASB95
8 and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense”; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed.
If we will maintain this focus of being built up on Jesus and on His word
This is who we are
SLIDE 12
1 Peter 2:9–10 NASB95
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
We are not just stones laying around everywhere, we are not used for throwing, not for weights and measures, not for building buildings but.... being built up on the one true Rock building His one true building “the building” His church His building!
SLIDE 13
WE ARE THE CHURCH
*a chosen race
*a royal priesthood
*a holy nation
*God’s Own Possession
We are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own possession
What do we do church, this royal priesthood, what do we do ? what is our job church?
“ to offer up spiritual sacrifices”
Put away all that childish stuff, everyday stones, everywhere stones just try to offer earthly fleshly sacrifices. We are to offer spiritual sacrifices
How do we do that? How do we maintain the spiritual focus?
You wanna get back to the church Peter says we are to be? This is where we always start our day.
SLIDE 14
Psalm 51:16–17 NASB95
16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
God doesn’t want all the physical, fleshly human thinking ways of sacrifice, He wants the spiritual, He wants us so broken down so we can hear His true voice, to operate the opposite the way the world thinks, yes our righteousness will be acused of as being evil, just like its always been with God’s true followers
