The Big Idea: A Disciple is a Learner
The Question: What does it look like to be a disciple-learner?
From the right source (Luke 6:39)
2. With submission (Luke 6:40a)
3. To be like someone (Luke 6:40b)
Luke 6:39 NLT
Then Jesus gave the following illustration: “Can one blind person lead another? Won’t they both fall into a ditch?
Explanation:
This is taken from a sermon
To be more specific, it is Luke’s equivalent to The Sermon on the Mount from Matthew
The main thing that the sermon of Luke 6:12-49 shows us is that Jesus is the good moral teacher
To be even more specific, the theme of this current section is about judging other people; the main point is that Christians can judge others, but not without judging themselves first.
This verse is a warning against false teaching
If a disciple/learner is under someone who is blind, the disciple/learner will be blind too
Not only will he be blind, he will fall into the pit and experience the consequences
So a disciple is not someone who learns from just anybody; Jesus’ disciples learn from Him and no one else
Your teacher needs to be someone who is more equipped than you are to guide you
Jesus is the only one who is truly equipped to guide you
People can help disciple others, but these disciples are not disciples of the people that are discipling them; they are disciples of Jesus
“No disciple should have any lower goal than to be like Jesus.”

Application:
Who is it that you are learning from the most?
In what ways are you being a disciple of something or someone that isn’t Jesus?
What do you need to do in order for Jesus to become your primary source of learning?
The Big Idea: A Disciple is a Learner
The Question: What does it look like to be a disciple-learner?
From the right source (Luke 6:39)
2. With submission (Luke 9:40a)
3. To be like someone (Luke 6:40b)
Luke 6:40 (NLT)
Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.
Explanation:
The word for disciple here is translated as “student” in the NLT to emphasize the component of learning in discipleship
Jesus’ followers are usually called “Christians,” but that word is only used 3 times, while the word disciple occurs 269 times in the NT
Robby Gallaty: “Christ did not come to make Christians; he came to make disciples”
In their culture, the word “disciple” was used to describe someone that would follow a Rabbi wherever he went in order to learn from him.
To be a disciple is to learn from a Rabbi, which in itself means that disciples have to submit to their Rabbi.
They are not the master; their Rabbi is
The student cannot know more than their master
You definitely see this with Jesus and His relationship with the 12: their goal is to learn from Him; any time that somebody tried to take charge and do something without Christ’s approval, things went wrong (think about Peter cutting off the guys’s ear, for example)
Back then, the Rabbi was essentially the only source of info for his disciples
They didn’t have the internet or the library!
Their only option was to submit to what their master was teaching them and to trust that what he is saying is correct
With Jesus as our ultimate Rabbi, He is to be our ultimate source of moral information; he defines what’s right and what’s wrong, not us!

Application:
Are you okay with being the learner and not the teacher?
In what ways do you need to surrender to Christ’s authority in order to be the disciple that He has called you to be?
What is it going to look like to let Jesus guide you by setting the standard for truth in your life?

Luke 6:40 (NLT)
Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.
Explanation:
The reason that the disciple learns from the Rabbi is so that they can become like the Rabbi
Francis Chan: “It’s impossible to be a disciple or a follower of someone and not end up like that person.”
You can’t be a disciple of Jesus and not look like Jesu; if you are a disciple of Jesus, you look like Jesus, and if you don’t, you’re not a disciple.
No disciple should ever have a goal less than that of being like Jesus
Who is it that becomes like the teacher? Those who are “fully trained”
This word means to render fit” or “complete”
It is sometimes specifically used to describe the repair of something that is broken (Mark 1:19 is a good example of this)
The point: becoming like Jesus requires both faith and effort
