Good morning everyone, and thank you for the opportunity to speak today. For those that don’t know my name is Dustin Alley and I’m the Lead Pastor here at Liberty Baptist and I hope to be your friend. In this short time I have with you it is my desire for you to better get to know me and my journey to the pastorate.
I had originally planned to talk about the church and our purpose because talking about myself is not something I do regularly. But after Mike spoke with me about this being my first presentation and how he saw it as an opportunity for people to get to know me first and then my next talk will be about the church. Although, I know I’ll give you some info about LIberty this morning.
I grew up in North east Tn and attended a small church in the backwoods of our small town. I married my wife Sarah the same year we graduated high school and we have been blessed to have 3 children and live in 5 different states together over the last 15 years.
I trusted in Jesus as my Savior at a young age and then at around 13 began asking questions about my faith that no one could answer. Questions about creation and evolution.
Fast forward 10 or so years and I’ve lived the life of a teenager and a young Marine. I was in Afghanistan in 2012 where I turned back to the Lord.
Came back from there and started going to church again in late 2012 and by summer of 2013 God had called me to full time ministry.
In 2015 I got out of the Marine Corps and was hired as an Assistant pastor while on terminal leave.
I worked with the youth while I was there finishing my Master’s of religious Education in biblical studies and graduated with that in 2018.
In 2019 God called me to take a step of faith into the Lead Pastorate position and ultimately moved us here.
Liberty has been here for 40 years, the building has been here for 30, and it’s been greeat to come in and be apart of a culture shift.
We have average about 160 in attendance right now, up from about 120 when I first got here.
Our worship services are at 11am on Sunday and our Childlrens, youth, and adult groups are on Wednesday nights at 630.
Our vision for Liberty is to reach 10% of our community with the gosple by loving God, serving others, and making an impact.
BNI plays apart of that vision by allowing us the opportunity to be an encouragement to you small business owners. If there is ever a need for prayer in your life or if you need a church to call home, we are here for you.
Also, to have the positive impact in Bristol we want to have, I believe having more connections in the community is must. So you all become a resource to us when we are meeting needs that come our way.
A good referall for us is Someone who is going through a hard time (Think Veterans with Donna),Someone looking to get baptized, but doesn’t know where to start,Someone who needs a Justice of the Peace that aligns with our faith and doesn’t know where to start, but a member could give a great referral of someone they know, Someone who hasn’t been to church in a long time, but may want to try out a new scene, Spouses who may be struggling, Kids trying to get more involved. Anyone looking to experience “not a typical church” in New England
Purpose of church
Purpose of church
Good morning everyone and thank you for the opportunity to speak with you today. In this short time I have it is my desire to help you better understand the purpose of Liberty Baptist and why we chose to be apart of BNI.
Have you ever watched the movie Princess Bride?
While there are many great quotes from the movie that have stood the test of time one of my favorites is the exchange between Vizzini and Inigo Matoya.
Vizzini uses the word that he is well known for “Inconceivable” and Ingo Mantoya says “You keep using that word, I do not think you know what that means.”
With respect, I often feel like Mr. Matoya when I hear people talk about church.
It is a common word in our english language yet has come to find so many different definitions.
These definitions are shaped by experiences and human involvement. At Liberty we seek to draw our definition of church from the Bible. The greek word church is translated from is Ekklesia, and means a called out assembly.
That called out group of people have one purpose
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Telling others about Jesus. That’s done corporately as we individually follow the commandments Jesus gave
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
The purpose of Liberty is to reach 10% of our community with the gospel by Loving God, Serving Others, and Making an impact.
The impact we’ve had in the last couple of years ranges from thousands of dollars raised for a young boy with a spine disease to seeing marriages restored.
We are apart of BNI for two purposes: 1. It is my desire to be an encouragement and resource for small business owners. 2. To make connections with members of our community to create a larger network of resources to bring about positive change in Bristol. And the last one was developed after I got in 3. Creatively market your businesses to not just our church but our community to ensure we hold up our end of the BNI bargain if you will.
Good referrals for us are not only people in need but people that want to make a difference through and with a church.
