How to Study the Bible week 3

“The heart broken, not by distress or disappointment, but on account of sin, is the heart which God peculiarly delights to heal.” - Charles Spurgeon
What is the most annoying thing in the world to you?
Why does it annoy you?
Tell Lankey pop tarts story.
Transition:
Do you think we ever annoy God?
I mean God told Adam and Eve one rule… don’t eat the fruit… and what do they do…
They … eat… the… fruit…
C’mon guys…
But does that mean God is annoyed with them?
What if our sin actually pushes God towards us and not away from us?
In other words, because we are sinners, God desires to come rescue us out of sin rather than leave us in our sin?
One thing that drives God towards you is the fact that you are a sinner and need Him!
And He knows we aren’t capable of taking the first step. We need Him too.
In Matthew 11:28-29 Jesus says,
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn fro me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for our souls.”
This is one of the few places in Scripture we see God say, “This is my heart.”
“I am gentle and lowly in heart...”
This is God’s most natural reaction to you.
Not anger, not reactionary, not frustration.
His most natural posture towards you is Gentleness and being willing to get on your level.
What a good God we serve.
TO help us see this in Scripture, we are going to search Genesis, Matthew, and even Revelation tonight.
Remember to ask these questions.
What does this passage say?
What does it teach us about God?
What does it tell us about man?
What does this passage demand of me?
How does this passage change the way I relate to people?
What does this passage prompt me to pray?
Tonight we are going to talk about Sin, our purpose, and how we can see our purpose throughout Scripture.
SO, What is your purpose?
1. Genesis 1:28, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it...”
This must be part of what God is doing!
Genesis 6:5-6 “When the Lord saw that man’s wickedness was widespread on the earth and that every scheme his mind thought of was nothing but evil all the time, the LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.”
Regret - God did not regret what He had done. This word is better translated “Grieved.” God is sad about what His creation has become. What God created and said was “very good” has now become filled with sin.
Genesis 9:1, “God blessed Noah and his sons and said tot hem, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.”
Genesis 11:4, “Come let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky. Let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise, we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
vs. 9, “… for there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth, and from there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.”
Genesis 12:2-3
