Read Mark 9:2-8
Mark 9:2–8 ASV 1901
And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them; and his garments became glistering, exceeding white, so as no fuller on earth can whiten them. And there appeared unto them Elijah with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter answereth and saith to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah. For he knew not what to answer; for they became sore afraid. And there came a cloud overshadowing them: and there came a voice out of the cloud, This is my beloved Son: hear ye him. And suddenly looking round about, they saw no one any more, save Jesus only with themselves.
What does the text say?
Jesus knowing the long journey that they were about to face Jesus took his inner 3 disciples James John and Peter on top of a mountain. During their time up on the mountain God allowed them to see Jesus Glorified body. The word transfigured means more beliutiful or elevated. WHile Jesus was transfutred he was more beautiful and his spiritual body was being seen by humans.
While all of this is going on Moses and the Prophet Elijah appeared before Jesus and the 3 disciples. What we are seeing is that Moses represents the Law, and Elijah Represents the Prohets. What God is doing in this context is showing us that Jesus is better than Moses and Elijah. Their ministries set up the ministry of Jesus. Jesus is the fulfillment of both the law and the prophets. But incase that was not enough God wanted to leave no doubt on the table, so he called out from heaven like he did when Jesus was baptised.
God said. “ This is my Beloved son; listen to him!”
What this did for the disciples is incredible. Think about this. Jesus just told you that he was going to be suffering, rejected, and must die, and be raised again. Then the next thing that we see is Jesus taking these men up on the mountain to see God in his glorified body, We hear God the father proclaiming who Jesus is, and demanding that they listen to him, and then they see people that they grew up studying appearing before them. Think about the lasting impact that made on the 3 men.
Here is what peter says of this event in 2 Peter 1:12-18 12 So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. 13 I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, 14 because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.
16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”[b] 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.
We see peter trying to remind people of this event. Because it was an event that changed him, and something that gave him faith in the lord Jesus Chrsit.
Read market 9:9-13
as they are coming down from the mountain we see this conversation between the disciples and Jesus. With Elijah fresh in their mind, they wanted help understanding what the religious Leaders meant when they said that Elijah must first come. Jesus said “ well because they are right he must come. The thing is he already came. “ You see John the baptist was Elijah. While he was not literally elijah his ministry was the finishing work of Elijahs ministry. You see they both came to preach of repentance and turning back to God.
I want you to see their is still confusion within the disciples about what Jesus meant by his death and resurrection, but they will soon find out.
Read Mark 9:14-29
Mark 9:14–29 ASV 1901
And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great multitude about them, and scribes questioning with them. And straightway all the multitude, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him. And he asked them, What question ye with them? And one of the multitude answered him, Teacher, I brought unto thee my son, who hath a dumb spirit; and wheresoever it taketh him, it dasheth him down: and he foameth, and grindeth his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast it out; and they were not able. And he answereth them and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I bear with you? bring him unto me. And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him grievously; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. And he asked his father, How long time is it since this hath come unto him? And he said, From a child. And oft-times it hath cast him both into the fire and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do anything, have compassion on us, and help us. And Jesus said unto him, If thou canst! All things are possible to him that believeth. Straightway the father of the child cried out, and said, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. And when Jesus saw that a multitude came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I command thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. And having cried out, and torn him much, he came out: and the boy became as one dead; insomuch that the more part said, He is dead. But Jesus took him by the hand, and raised him up; and he arose. And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, How is it that we could not cast it out? And he said unto them, This kind can come out by nothing, save by prayer.
After coming down from the mountain Jesus and the 3 disciples are met by his powerless disciples, and a man with a boy who has epelepsy. The disciples tried to cast the epelepsy from the boy, but could not do it. The father then turned to Jesus and asked if he could helao his boy. Jesus said that he could do it if the boys father believed, because everything is possible for the one who believes.”
This lead the boys father to cry out. I do believe; But help my unblief. Jesus then Healed the boy. Then he told his disciples the reason they could not heal the boy is because this demon he could only drive out in prayer.
What does this story teach me about God or Jesus?
I think it's helpful to see that God was preparing his disciples for the suffering that they would soon face as they see their friend, the messiah of the world would be rejected, would suffer, and die a tragic death. Then they suffer for the rest of their life as they follow after him.
The thing we see is how he prepared his disciples. He did it by showing How BIG, how Beautiful, and how Holy God really was. We see God in his glorified state, God is showing us in this passage HOW BIG, How WONDERFUL and HOW GLORIOUS he really is.
Then we see the compassion that God has for his creation. He goes all the way to help someone with their unblief by being involved and helping them in their daily life and in their daily struggle.
What does this teach me about Man?
While God is preparing his disciples, showing them his glory, and being involved in their daily life he is met with miss understanding, unbelief, if they are anything like us business that that leads them toforgeting to look for his glory, and ultimately placing God in a little box in our life. Forgetting how big, how beuitifyl, how holy, and how Good God really is.
God is doing all of that for us, but we literally do not respect, or have a right understanding of really who God is.
What should we do?
you and I should follow in the footsteps of the boys father in verse 24. We need to cry out to God and ask him to help our unbelief. Then we should try to see how big, beautiful, and how glorious God is both in creation and in his word.
Why should I do that?
Let me give you a few reasons that you should do that.
It's after giving up your self-confidence, and coming to an end of ourselves and asking God for help, then God helping us by showing us how big he is, for us to see his glory for what it really is. It's at this point that we will gain more confidence in what the Lord has done for us.
Because he promised to show us. Jesus said seek, and you will find, knock, and the door will be oped to you.” God promised that if you will seek to see him and his glory you will find it. I want you to understand You are able to see God and his glory because Jesus has given you the ability to see it.
When God came to earth to save you, and called you to salvation he did not do it just to forgive your sins. He did it to reconcile or restore you're relationship back into right standing with God. Part of having that right relationship with God is the ability to see God and his glory.
When God Came down he didi not just “ Save” you God made you a new creation, and when you made you a new creation he gave you the eyes to see his glory.
The sad reality is I think most of us are like the man in chapter 8 that God healed his sight, but when he first got the new sight and could see people looked like trees walking. I think we have eyes to see his glory by still need God to make things more clear for us.
When you see Gods glory it will probably lead to a feeling of fear, and inadequacy. Look at what peter said in verse 5 and 6.
They didn't know it was good they where there, They didn't know what to say, they where terrified.
But Its when you see you inadequacy, and you see how Good and Holy God really is. Then you remember that God showed His love for you that wile you were still sinners Jesus died for you. Its that unconditional, undeserved love that awakens your heart, and that will truly lead to unstopable Joy.

You

So what is it you should do?
Is pray over and over and over agian for God to show you his glory.
Then I want to challenge you to read Psalms 24, 57,96,126.
While you are reading them Just simply ask the question
What is God showing me about himself in this text?
Why Is God whoing me about Humans and myself in this text?
How is this text leading me to pray?

We

I want you to think about what would happen if each and every one of us saw Gods glory in our personal life. Think about it. do you think...
We would be more excited to sing and worship God the following Sunday?
Do you think people would be more about excited about coming to church?
Do you think if we are excidengly worship God, being changed by God, and to be excited to be here that other people would want to join in on the excitement and to encounter God working in their own life?
I think that this could be the key to our church growing.
