I Peter 1:9-19

Last week Tim went through the introduction of I Peter and then talked about the imperishable, undefiled, and unfading inheritance. And how through various trials the genuineness of our faith is test.

8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,

1 Peter 1:9–19 ESV
9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. 13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

Salvation

1 Peter 1:9 ESV
9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
One of the five Solas “through Faith Alone”
The faith here is the faith that still exist after all the persecution mentioned in the previous verses. and the goal of that faith is salvation. The outcome or Telos is the final result, end, completion.
1 Peter 1:10–11 ESV
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.
This salvation is so monumental that even the great prophets, writers of the old testament, searched it out. The prophets prophesied and taught about the Messiah and had limited information.
The Greek word used here translates to searched out and means investigate, crave, demand. Another word I saw used was perseveringly.
They did not search after it but concerning it or “of” it. Who, what, where, when, and how. They were given the why.
The prophets were inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.
From the beginning of the world the Messiah’s Suffering and Exaltation (our Salvation) has been reveled through the prophets by the Spirit of Christ or the Holy Spirit.
Because we know the end results of our faith we often have a hard time understanding the faith and fortitude of the Prophets diligently following Gods will with so little information.
Matthew 13:17 ESV
17 For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.
1 Peter 1:12 ESV
12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
So now we see the outcome of their investigation. The Holy spirit revels to the prophets that they were not serving themselves, what they were doing was for the benefit of future generations.
Daniel 8:15–17 ESV
15 When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it. And behold, there stood before me one having the appearance of a man. 16 And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the Ulai, and it called, “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.” 17 So he came near where I stood. And when he came, I was frightened and fell on my face. But he said to me, “Understand, O son of man, that the vision is for the time of the end.”
But You, so Peter brings it back to his audience. and references that the teachings that they have heard (both prophets and apostles) were delivered by the Holy spirit.
things into which angels long to look.
The Angels even desire to know what the readers knew.

thing in order to look at it; to look at with head bowed forwards; to look into with the body bent; to stoop and look into

Angels looking into (visual demonstration) after definition
Peter stresses in this passage that the believers get to enjoy the fulfillment of that which the great prophets merely foresaw and the mysteries are hidden from angelic powers.
Since the prophets ministered to you and did not understand fully and the angels “Desire to Look Into” them, how earnestly you should respect them.

Hope

1 Peter 1:13 ESV
13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
“Therefore”-A Connector Now its time for action. Up until this point Peter Just tells readers about their inheritance. Paints a picture. Now lets connect that picture to action
preparing your mind for action. (rolling up your selves)
Prepare you minds for action - Direct Greek translation is “Having Girded Up the loins of your mind. “
Note: Describe what girding up is.
Shorten up your garment to so that it does not impede motion so that you are ready for action.
Preparation for: workmen, pilgrims, runners, wrestlers and warriors.
Luke 12:35 ESV
35 “Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning,
Being Sober Minded (Self controlled) Be sober-minded in opinion, as well as in practice, and humble in your judgment of yourselves. Time to get serious.
1 Peter 5:8 ESV
8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
The main verb of this section is hope To anticipate usually with pleasure.
This anticipation with pleasure needs to be placed fully on grace. The original Greek not only says hope but perfect hope.
Perfectly
τελείως tĕlĕiōs, tel-i´-oce; completely, i.e. (of hope) without wavering:— to the end.
Christians are called to anticipate and live in anticipation until the second coming of Christ.
“Grace that will be brought to you”. Future grace.

His final revelation will complete God’s deliverance of His people.

This speaks of the endurance of hope. Perfect hope until the deliverance of HIS people. Christian lives need to be focused and prepared for the return of Christ.
This is the first command of 4 in this section (13-25) (Hope, Obey, Live, Love)

Obedience/Be Holy

1 Peter 1:14–16 ESV
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
The obedience of minors to their parents was highly valued , and roman and Jewish laws actually required it.
Not just children that obey because they have to or are afraid of discipline but these obedient children are the ones that are obedient by character. Obedient because of a relationship.
Now that our mind is renewed do not change back to what you once were.
Romans 12:2 ESV
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
As Christians we have to fight the desire of our sinful nature. Christianity is a relationship and ALL sin is a violation of that relationship.
Be holy a I am Holy we see this also in:
Leviticus 11:44 ESV
44 For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. You shall not defile yourselves with any swarming thing that crawls on the ground.
Christians need to be set apart from evil similarly to the nation of Isreal. Exiles in a land not being part of the world and what it has to offer but set apart.

Live

1 Peter 1:17 ESV
17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile,
God is refereed to as a father and a judge. Both of whom are impartial. Not accepting the Jew above the Gentile. Ac 10:34 “34 So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality,”
Judging because of deeds not because of the person.
We should live our lives with fear, not a terrorizing fear but one of fearing discipline and fatherly displeasure. Again that relationship. We don’t want to let our Father down
If you call on the father do it out of fear. Fear God not the persecutors.
Again we see Peter using Exile/alien, being that Christians are resident aliens temporarily residing here on earth.
1 Peter 1:18–19 ESV
18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
Ransomed - Freed from the bondage of sin . We were purchased with a high price. The Blood of Christ.
We were purchased out of slavery from our useless ways. Having no purpose and getting us no where.
In Exodus 30 we see this same atonement in under the law. Which Christ fulfilled.
Exodus 30:10 ESV
10 Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year. With the blood of the sin offering of atonement he shall make atonement for it once in the year throughout your generations. It is most holy to the Lord.”
We learn about atonement and how it had to be made on a yearly basis. It was a temporary atonement only lasting for a year. The Israelites were ransomed for half a shekel each, which went toward the purchase of the sacrificial lamb. This ransom was given for the atonement for their lives.
We were not ransomed with earthly perishable things but with the atoning Blood of Jesus Christ. This purchase is a non perishable purchase.
Similar to the census tax where the peolpe of isreal were commanded to pay half a shekel as a ransom for their life. this money was used to purchase the sacraficial lamb.
“so as to make atonement for your lives”
Since the epistles are descriptive we can take these things and apply them to our live today.
