No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.

And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.
The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops.
Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things.
Soldier/Athlete/Farmer
Before you can wrap your mind around one he moves on to another.
Many times when we think of an American man/soldier, we have a one dimensional picture.
The hero who comes home.....
It’s not always the storied life that is pictured in the movies.
Sometimes there are hidden costs to the freedom that we enjoy.
Don was a man of multiple dimensions:
Soldier
Hard worker
Provider
Artist
The Soldier
The Soldier
Don served in the United States Air Force....
And as such he was an inspiration to us all.
Paul used this illustration of a soldier and his focus to speak to a young man whom he mentored.
The soldier doesn’t get caught up in a lot of affairs of life.
Don trusted some things to Enga and let her take care of them. And Enga did a fine job....
The Soldier doesn’t listen to every voice out there.
Doctors could give their orders and it didn’t really matter to Don, but when the VA told him what he needed to do, he did it.
Who you listen to does matter. Of course the doctors were probably giving him good advice, but....
I’m reminded of the armies of Israel cowering and hiding behind rock’s as that giant Goliath refined the art of Trash Talking.
He took it to a whole new level.
But, the only people who were afraid of Goliath were those who listened to him every day!
I’m talking about a soldier’s focus!

And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.
Paul is thinking about the athlete when he writes:
Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,
I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Plants the crop so that others might eat.

The later introduction of Universal Standard Time, which is based on time zones, revolutionized time keeping.
It’s not how long you live, but how well you live.
Jesus only saw age 33
MLK, Deitrick Bonhoffer age 39
Joan of Arc was in her 20s
Wither you lived to see 21 or 91 the secret to a good life is to find that eternal principle around which to order the rest of your life.
Some people are always going ....
There’s power in having something around which to order the rest of your life.
I do many things, but it’s ordered around one thing.
Seek ye first the kingdom ....

Here at this cemetery we commit this body to its kindred dust.
The Word of God says, “the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Gen 2:7)
God later told Adam, “for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”(Gen 3:19)
Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust-the spirit we leave with God. This is the end of all living.
May we who are living take it to heart. All we acquire in this life, whether it be wealth, possessions, education or knowledge will not go with us beyond this point.
Let us commit ourselves to him that said, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.”John 11:25-26
May the Lord comfort you today with his wonderful peace that passes all understanding.
These words that the psalmist penned still rings true today “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.”(Psalms 23:4)
