The Trinity!!!
The Trinity!!!
35 To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord is God; there is no other besides him.
16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
God
God
God exists as the invisible Father, from whom all revelation proceeds and who sent…
the Son, who mediates between God and man, and historically manifested that revelation as a human, God in flesh, and
the Holy Spirit, who was sent by the Father and, as God, divinely applies the revelation of God to men.
Question: What do you think of those definitions? How would change them? Is the Trinity clearly explained in these statements?
God’s name itself implies plurality. The Bible states in no uncertain terms that there is but one God.
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
Question: By anything BUT Faith can these be understood?
Question: What are some of the different explanations that you are aware of the try to explain the the Trinity?
But throughout the Old Testament, the Hebrew name for God—“Elohim”—is in the plural, indicating more than one.
Question: What does this mean? How is it valuable to us today?
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—”
7 Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.”
Question: Who is the us? Does it matter? Is there any other explanation for the uses of “Us” in these verses.+
What does the Bible say about each member of the Trinity?
1. The Father is God
As the Creator of the universe and of man, God is often spoken of as the Father. Just as a human father has a special relationship with his children, so too God as Creator also has a special relationship with His creation.
QUESTION: WHAT DO THESE WORDS MEAN TO YOU?
HE IS:
Omniscient—He has infinite awareness, understanding, and insight.
Omnipotent—He has unlimited authority, power, and influence.
Omnipresent—He is present in all places at all times.
Immutable—He is not capable of or susceptible to change. He has been and will always be the same.
Eternal—He is infinite. He has no beginning and will have no end.
Question: How does your understanding of the Trinity differ from this?
Jesus
Jesus
Jesus and the Holy Spirit
Next, let’s look at some facts about Jesus and the Holy Spirit and their attributes. You will notice they possess the same attributes as God the Father.
Jesus is co-equal with God the Father
The apostle Paul is considered to be the architect of orthodox theology. He made the fact of Jesus being co-equal to God very clear when he wrote that “we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13).
Other passages
4 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?
Question: How did he do that? Which of the characteristics of Jesus (shared with God) did He express here?
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Question:
Which of the characteristics of Jesus (shared with God) did He express here?
-------
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
--------------
Jesus was called “Holy”
69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
Question: Why is it important that Jesus be “the Holy One of God?”
Jesus was ascribed the works of God—We see in Scripture that Jesus was involved in creation (John 1:3), He is a sovereign ruler (Matthew 25:31), and He sustains the universe (Colossians 1:17)
3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.
17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Question: What is a summary statement that you can come up with for these three verses?
Jesus is worthy of worship and honor—Note what Thomas declared about Jesus—he called Him “my Lord and my God” (John 20:28).
28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”
Jesus’ name is associated equally with that of God the Father—“In the name of the Father and of the Son… ” (Matthew 28:19).
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Question: Please put this verse into common language.
Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is co-equal with God the Father and God the Son—He too is a person, and not a force, as some people mistakenly assume.
Question: What is your understanding of the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is directly connected to God—In Acts 5:3-4
Acts 5:3–4 (ESV)
3But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?
4While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”
The Holy Spirit’s names speak of divinity—For example, Scripture speaks of the Holy Spirit as the “Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 6:11),
11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
“Spirit of Christ” (Romans 8:9), and “Spirit of truth” (John 14:17).
9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
The Holy Spirit possesses all the other divine attributes of God:—
Omniscience: “The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God… no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:10-11).
1 Corinthians 2:10–11 (ESV)
10these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
11For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
Question: Explain these two verses. Express your doubts, express your desires to know more of God.
Omnipresence:
7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?
Question: This makes no sense to me. Help me understand.
—Omnipotence: He was “hovering” in the sense of participating in and protecting the work of creation.
2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Question: What does that mean?
------------
If you are a Christian, the teaching of the Trinity is a key element of your faith.
By keeping in mind the work each member of the Trinity does, you can direct petitions and prayers of thanks and worship to them.
Furthermore, the perfect love and unity within the Godhead models for you the oneness and affection that should characterize your relationship with other believers within the body of Christ.
