Matthew 6:9-13

Matthew 6:9–13 ESV
9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Prayer

Introduction

Desire to be a prayer warrior
Prayer is fundamentally two things:
An expression of our powerlessness
An intimate conversation between Father and child

Context

Sermon on the mount
Teachings on:
Being salt and light
Christ fulfilling the Law
Anger
Lust
Divorce
Oaths
Retaliation
Loving your enemies
And giving to the needy

The prayer of the hypocrites

Matthew 6:5–6 ESV
5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Not a admonition against public prayer

Hail Mary

1. Jesus intended this prayer the be a PATTERN for the servant of the Kingdom.

MODEL prayer for us
The “Disciple’s Prayer”
Pray LIKE Jesus, not what Jesus prayed.
Matthew 6:9 (ESV)
9 Pray then like this: …
The range of themes is vast from:
God’s name
His kingdom
His will
Bread
Debts of sin
Temptation

2. Prayer should INVOKE the NAME of GOD.

Matthew 6:9 (ESV)
9 … “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Deuteronomy 14:1 ESV
1 “You are the sons of the Lord your God. You shall not cut yourselves or make any baldness on your foreheads for the dead.
Deuteronomy 32:7 ESV
7 Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations; ask your father, and he will show you, your elders, and they will tell you.
Psalm 103:13 ESV
13 As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
Hosea 11:1 ESV
1 When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.
Jeremiah 31:9 ESV
9 With weeping they shall come, and with pleas for mercy I will lead them back, I will make them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble, for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

Relationship with God

Hallowed be Your Name

Let Your name be Holy
“Sanctified” - set apart
Hold Him in reverence - honor, glorify and exalt Him.
Blessing on the one addressed.

Essence of the first three commandments

You shall have no other gods before me
You shall not make for yourselves and idol
You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

3. Prayer should SEEK God’s KINGDOM on EARTH.

Matthew 6:10 (ESV)
10 Your kingdom come,
Mark 1:14–15 ESV
14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Already but not yet
Believer aligns himself with the will of God
Join the kingdom movement
“Come, O Lord” (marana tha)
Faithfully obedient
Living out Kingdom principles in our lives

4. Prayer should SEEK God’s WILL in OUR LIVES and THE LIVES OF OTHERS.

Matthew 6:10 (ESV)
10 … your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
God’s purpose
Ephesians 1:11 ESV
11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
God’s Desire
Psalm 40:8 ESV
8 I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”
John 4:34 ESV
34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.
Matthew 26:39 ESV
39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
Matthew 26:42 ESV
42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”
Matthew 12:50 ESV
50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

Prayer can then be properly focused on the needs of Christ’s disciples.

Transition in the prayer
Similar to transition in the Ten commandments

5. Prayer should be focused on the disciple’s PHYSICAL NEEDS.

Matthew 6:11 ESV
11 Give us this day our daily bread,
Not just food, all needs.
Word for “daily” is used only here and in parallel passage in Luke parallel.
Daily reliance!!!
Recalling manna from heaven
The PRESENT day in focus.
Not an admonition on planning and working for the future, just not being anxious about it!
Philippians 4:6 ESV
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
Matthew 6:25–34 ESV
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Instead of being anxious, we should be falling on our knees daily and thanking God for the blessings of food on our table, a roof on our head and the clothes on our back!!

6. Prayer should include both CONFESSION of sin and GRATITUDE for God’s grace.

Matthew 6:12 (ESV)
12 and forgive us our debts
Different words here and in Luke
Sin creates a debt that we CANNOT pay!
Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Matthew 26:28 ESV
28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Our gratitude to God should drive us to our knees every day!!!
It should also drive us to forgive those who have wronged us!!
Matthew 6:12 ESV
12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Matthew 6:14–15 ESV
14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Turn with me to Matthew Chapter 18

Matthew 18:21–35 ESV
21 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

7. Prayer should remind us we are in a SPIRITUAL BATTLE.

Matthew 6:13 ESV
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Sin is a spiritual battle between us and the forces of evil both outside and within us.
Not a temptation from God!
James 1:13 ESV
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.
Romans 7:14–20 ESV
14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. 15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
Ephesians 6:11–12 ESV
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
