The Request

Do we have to still do these fasts
the fasts that we are doing because of the fall of Israel
God had a response that was negative
you were sent into captivity because you did not listen to the prophets
you did not love your neighbor as yourself
you made these fasts for yourself
these fasts are continuing to this day, so they did not stop
here in chapter 8, God is going to give them some positive words
God has 9 statements He gave to the people
some were for that time some were for the future
remember these are the responses to the question.
do we do these fasts anymore
read Zechariah 8
Pray

God Is With His People

the first 5 of the thus says the Lord of Hosts
are promises God will fulfill
are something they can take to the bank
God will fulfill His promise to them
#1 I am exceedingly jealous
Zechariah 8:1–2 LEB
And the word of Yahweh of hosts came, saying, “Thus says Yahweh of hosts: ‘I am exceedingly jealous for Zion; I am jealous for it with great wrath.’
this wrath is outward going, to the ones harassing her
#2 God will dwell there
Emmanuel - God with us
Zechariah 8:3 LEB
Thus says Yahweh: ‘I have returned to Zion, and I will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem; and Jerusalem will be called the faithful city, and the mountain of Yahweh of hosts will be called the holy mountain.’
this is in the Millennial Kingdom
#3 people will live in peace
Zechariah 8:4–5 LEB
Thus says Yahweh of hosts: ‘Old men and old women shall again sit in the public squares of Jerusalem, each with staff in hand because of great age. And the public squares of the city will be filled with boys and girls playing in its public squares.’
#4 with God all things are possible
Zechariah 8:6 LEB
Thus says Yahweh of hosts: ‘Even if it seems impossible to the remnant of this people in those days, should it also seem impossible to me?’ declares Yahweh of hosts.
#5 God will bring His people back
Zechariah 8:7–8 LEB
Thus says Yahweh of hosts: ‘Look! I am going to save my people from the land of the east, and from the land of the west, and I will bring them and they will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. They will be my people and I will be their God in faithfulness and in righteousness.’

Obedience

now there is the next statement from God
that includes their obedience to work
# 6
Zechariah 8:9 LEB
“Thus says Yahweh of hosts: ‘Let your hands be strong, you who are hearing in these days these words from the mouth of the prophets who were present on the day the foundation was laid for the rebuilding of the temple, the house of Yahweh of hosts.
let your hands be strong in the work
the temple needs to be built
the book of Haggai spoke of the need to get back to work on the temple
so what does this have to do with the Question, do we stop the fasts?
again it comes back to what does God want?
what is important to Him
not what is important to us
you obey Me and you will be blessed
Zechariah 8:10 LEB
For before those days there was no wage for people or for animals, and there was no safety from the enemy for those who went out or those who came in, and I sent each person against one another.
you were slaves in captivity
but now
Zechariah 8:11–12 LEB
But now I will not deal with the remnant of this people as in the former days,’ declares Yahweh of hosts. ‘For there will be a sowing of peace; the vine will give its fruit, and the soil will give its produce, and the heavens will give their dew. And I will cause the remnant of this people to inherit all these things.
but you will be treated differently
Zechariah 8:13 LEB
And then, just as you were a curse among the nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so will I save you, and you will be a blessing. You must not be afraid; let your hands be strong!’ ”
let your hands be strong
obey me
God has a great love for the people of Israel
and he wants to bless them and give them prosperity
but remember the blessings and cursings of Deut 28
its up to them, whether they obey
Obedience Rather Than Sacrifice
Turn to 1 Samuel 15
God gave specific instructions destroy all, kill all
Saul said we brought the good stuff to sacrifice to God
we disobeyed so we could do a good thing for God
1) disobedience is an act of rebellion, 2) disobedience is sinful, 3) disobedience is a form of idolatry, 4) disobedience disrespects God’s Word, and 5) disobedience is based on looking good to other people rather than to God. GotQuestions.org
#7 reminder of the command to love
Zechariah 8:14–15 LEB
For thus says Yahweh of hosts: “Just as I planned to bring disaster on you when your ancestors provoked me to anger,” says Yahweh of hosts, “and I did not regret it, so again I have planned in these days to do good to Jerusalem and the house of Judah. Do not be afraid!
again obedience brings blessing
Zechariah 8:16–17 LEB
These are the things that you must do: speak truth, each of you, with his neighbor; practice trustworthy judgment and peace in your gates. Do not devise evil in your hearts against your neighbor, and do not love a false oath, because all these are things I hate,” declares Yahweh.

The Future Millennial Kingdom

#8 the outcome of the fasts
the direct answer from God about the fasts
Zechariah 8:18–19 LEB
And the word of Yahweh of hosts came to me, saying “Thus says Yahweh of hosts: ‘The fast of the fourth month, the fifth month, the seventh month, and the tenth month will be for the house of Judah jubilation and joy and merry festivals; therefore love truth and peace.’
these have not happened as of yet
they are still to this day observing these fasts
#10 Jews blessing to the nations
Zechariah 8:20–21 LEB
Thus says Yahweh of hosts: ‘It will happen again that nations and the inhabitants of many cities will come. And the inhabitants of one city will go to another city, saying, “Let us go immediately to entreat the favor of Yahweh, to seek Yahweh of hosts—I also will go!”
Zechariah 8:22–23 LEB
And many peoples and powerful nations will come to seek Yahweh of hosts in Jerusalem, and to entreat the favor of Yahweh.’ Thus says Yahweh of hosts: ‘In those days ten men from the nations of every language will take hold of the hem of a Judean man, saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you!” ’ ”
the blessings that God has promised to the people who obey
the blessings that God has promised to the people in the future
the great kingdom of the future
the great government with Jesus as the king
the peace and justice this world will have
the fasts of mourning that will turn into feasts of merry festivals
now God wants us to obey, trust in his promises, and live as He has called us to live
