This psalm begins with the words, “The Lord reigneth;” like two other enthronement Psalms before (93, 97)
He then says, “let the people tremble.”
This is the effect to the cause “the Lord reigneth.”
Why ought we tremble before the Lord?
Why ought we worship God?
In short because of His holiness.
This psalm emphasizes the holiness of God throughout.
Holiness is just one of the many attributes of God.
An attribute is a unique characteristic and quality that only God Himself possesses.
We as humans, may reflect some of these attributes, but only God fully, and perfectly and without fail demonstrates them.
Things like being:
good
loving
merciful
wise
true
faithful
righteous
just
eternal
unchangeable
all-powerful (omnipotent)
all-knowing (omniscient)
present everywhere (omnipresent)
Here in this Psalm the emphasis is on the God’s holiness.
“He sitteth between the cherubims”
Only the high priest could enter the holy of holies.
And that only after they had made a sacrifice for their sins and brought that sacrificial blood before His presence.
He is so holy, only those atoned by the blood could enter His presence.
So we ought to worship Him, because He is holy.
In his holiness He shows us many other reasons why we ought to come before Him and worship Him.
His holiness causes us to tremble.
This is the meaning of the words “be moved” in verse 1.
But we see some other attributes of God, some other reasons we ought to worship before Him.
I.
He Is Great
Verse 2a
The meaning here is not that God is absolutely great, although that is true!
But the fact that He has shown himself great in Zion.
He has demonstrated His greatness to His people through all He has done for us.
What has God done for you?
He saved you
He has forgiven you
He has made you His child
He has provided for you
He has given you a church that loves you
He has taught you from His Word
The list could go on and on, but He is great to us!
II.
He Is Exalted
Verse 2b
to exalt means to lift high for all to see.
I think of the young man who shoots the basketball from beside the opponents net.
As the ball flies through the air, the final buzzer rings, and time seems to go in slow motion as the ball swishes through the net.
They have won the game and the whole crowd goes wild as they rush onto the court and lift the hero on their shoulders.
He is the hero, lifted high above all the people.
Someone just comes into the gymnasium, not having seen what has happened.
Yet they cheer on the hero, why?
Because of what they have experienced and seen, no because of what others testify to what this hero has done for them.
We worship God not only because He is great to us, but because he is exalted by all the people.
We see what He is capable of and we worship Him.
We worship Him because He is Great, and He is Exalted, but also because of ...
III.
His Name is Holy
Verse 3
The names of God reveal the attributes of God.
It reveals who He is.
Yaweh - The Lord
Adonai - Master
Abba - Father
Jehovah Jireh - The Lord will Provide
Jehovah Rapha - The Lord who Heals
Jehovah Nissi - The Lord is My banner
Jehovah Shalom - The Lord is Peace
Jehovah Shammah - The Lord is There
And so many more!
When we hear the name of God, and what it means for us, we can’t help but to worship Him - for who He is!
He is Great, He is Exalted, His Name is Holy, and then we see we worship Him because of....
IV.
His Strength
verse 4
He is strong and mighty, but His strength is tempered with His justice and equity and righteousness.
Justice
He will always do the right thing
this word judgment speaks to the legal decisions made.
His decisions are always right.
His strength is tempered by justice, but also by...
Equity
rightness, fairness, smoothness
Human parents can’t always see the perfectly fair way
But God is always fair.
It may not be the way we see it, or want it, but it is always the right way!
That’s because His strength is also tempered by His...
Righteousness
blameless conduct and integrity
Justice, right actions, right attitudes.
We worship Him because what he does in our life is righteous!
He is strong, but He is just, fair and righteous!
Verse five is a call to Exalt him and worship at His footstool.
This gives us our posture in worshiping a holy God.
