Matthew 4:8–11 (NASB95) — 8 Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; 9 and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’ ” 11 Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.
And do so Jesus would not only forfeit His future reign but the souls of man.
Jesus may have recieved the kingdom but it would be an aweful lonely place after the human race is sentenced forever in the lake of fire.
Mark 8:36 (NASB95) — 36 “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
Or the souls of the whole world
Mark 8:37 (NASB95) — 37 “For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
The and final wilderness trial is about to conclude. and Satan again takes Jesus. Luke writes that Jesus is led. Here is a vantage point where Jesus would have a panoramic view of the kingdoms of this world
4:8 very high mountain The location of this mountain is unknown. Matthew’s Gospel records many important events taking place on mountains—
the Sermon (Matt 5:1),
Jesus’ prayer (14:23),
the transfiguration (17:1),
and the Great Commission (28:20).

in addition
the mountain was the place where Abraham went to sacrifice Isaac. (Genesis 22:1-19
Jesus is shown, now here comes the lust of the eyes.
1 John 2:16–17 (NASB95) — 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
The road ahead will not be easy for Jesus. There is a cross that lay in His future. Jesus knew it. Placing Jesus on the mountain not only gave him a view of the kingdoms but a view of a King overlooking the kingdoms.
Note that it was the Devil and not God that took Jesus to this lofty place. Here are the Kingdoms of the world, and you could be the King of it all. You can avoid the cross. You can be the ruler now.
Note also that Satan offered what was currently his.
Luke 4:5–8 (NASB95) — 5 And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.
It still God’s of course, but it is under the devil’s territorial gain after the fall of Man. It is Satan who has set up the authorities which governs this dark world.
Ephesians 6:12 (NASB95) — 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
The Devil offers Jesus the kingdom of the world if you would fall down and worship him.
Satan makes a deal. Taking the deal would mean that Jesus could have the kingdom now. but the cost would be the souls of man.
There is a geographic will of God. that God places the believer for service where God chooses.
there is also God’s timing.
this principle is true in the life of Christ and His ministry and it is true in the life of the believer
How often have all of us have taken ourselves out from God’s will and God’s plan for our lives because we did not recognize God’s place for us and God’s timing. and we moved, out from where God was going to bless us but we were too impatient to wait. Do you have any shoulda woulda coulda’s related to getting in the way of God’s timing?
Neither this place on the mountain which the Devil had taken Jesus, nor the time was for Jesus.
there will be a mount for Jesus.
Psalm 2:6 (NASB95) — 6 “But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”
And there will be a time for Jesus.
Jesus tells his Mother Mary at the wedding feast when she looks to him to provide the wine as it was running out.
John 2:4 (NASB95) — 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.”
Jesus tells His brothers who instructs him to go up to the feast
John 7:6–7 (NASB95) — 6 So Jesus said to them, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune. 7 “The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.
there is a “not yet” to God’s plan. There is a time of waiting. and when we begin to get in God’s way as far a timing, we can postpone or take ourselves right out of what it is that God is doing in our lives.
There may be a time when we are to brought low and even out for a time. Often the road to spiritual success is not up, but down.
Jesus demonstrates for the lowliest of the lows
1 Peter 5:6–11 (NASB95) — 6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. 8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. 10 After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. 11 To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen.
God does the exalting; “He may exalt you”
On God’s timing; “at the proper time,”
Jesus’ time and his status is that which was imaged by Joseph the suffering servant. He himself is not yet exalted before man. Many things in life will be offered to the believer by way of wealth and luxury in order to distract the believer and remove him or her out of God’s will.
In the worldly sense, you can have it today and pay for it tomorrow. and you will pay for it for tomorrow comes and so does the bill.
and while we might say, “Oh look at how God blessed me with this and that,” we fail to see that the kingdoms of this world are currently are under the Dark Lord’s dominion, and Satan can prosper also.
