Structure of Ezekiel 38 - 39

Who is Gog?

Ezekiel ((6) God’s Defense of Restored Israel (38:1–39:29))

Many suggestions have been offered for the identity of Gog.

Some of these include: (1) Gugu or Gyges, a ruthless ruler of Lydia; (2) Gagu, a ruler of the land of Sakhi, an area north of Assyria; (3) an unidentified ruler whose name is from a Sumerian loan word gug, which means “darkness”; (4) an official title for a ruler comparable to pharaoh or king; (5) a general term for any enemy of God’s people.

Where are these lands?

The names in Ezekiel’s list form a geographic pattern: Meshech, Tubal, Gomer, and Beth-Togarmah represent the northern extreme of the world known to Israel; Persia, Cush, and Put the eastern and southern extreme, suggesting that the whole neighboring world is involved in this attack against Israel.

Sheba and Dedan -Arab tribes in the east on the Arabian peninsula.

Tarshish would be to the west in the Mediterranean which would be modern day Spain.

With all these involved the whole world in attacking Israel.

When is the war of Gog and Magog going to happen?

Perhaps it is just a caricature of God’s actions for is glory.

Gog and Magog war will be in the end times.

When in the end times?

Three options-

End of the Millennial Kingdom (Rev.

20:7-10)

Beginning of the Millennial Kingdom I.E.

Armageddon (Rev.

19:11-21)

During the first half of the Tribulation Period (Dan.

9:24-27)

Remember God is in Control He is working for his glory.

Be not Afraid
