Got Milk?
Text: Hebrews 5:13 (ESV)
Milk is used as a common metaphor for levels of teaching or instructions. The author is calling Christians to maturity.
I believe that God is actually pleased to see Christians grow in grace
Striving towards maturity Growing towards being better
The question is, are you or have you grown in grace since you’ve been into the word
What stuff do you no longer do that you used to do? Has your faith in God grown any? Or better yet, how much more have we’ve grown spiritually here or since you’ve been listening I had to evaluate how much I have grown spiritually as a leader
The book of Hebrews has something to say about maturity. These believers had come to saving faith in Christ and had been faithful to Him in past times. They had even endured significant persecution and had made it through.
However, as time passed, many had grown spiritually sluggish; they had stopped maturing in their faith and were now in danger of turning away from their New Covenant faith in Jesus Christ.
In this day and time, there is a danger of immaturity, of falling from Christ
· A per remains immature because he is slow to learn. Vs11
· A person remains immature because they refuse to grow. Vs. 12
· A person remains immature because he knows little about the Word of God, little about righteousness. Vs13
· A person remains immature because he does not train his mental and spiritual senses. Vs. 13
· A person needs to get past the ABCs of teaching-past the basic, elementary teachings about Christ. Ch6, v.1-2
· A person must be determined to grow in Christ
There’s more to Hebrews than chapter 11, the hall of faith
Hebrews 1: The supremacy of Christ
Hebrews 2: Christ, the High Priest
Hebrews 4: The importance of Sabbath rest
Hebrews 5: Jesus the High Priest again
Hebrews 6: Is spiritual maturity and how important it is
Hebrews 8-10: The supreme minister
Hebrews 10:19-11:40: The supreme author of Faith
Hebrews 12: The supreme example of endurance
Hebrews 13: The supreme marks of Christian conduct
Whoever this unknown writer is, he has something to say about growing up in Christ. That at some point, you should be able to look and see that Jesus had done something in you!
Watch this: I already know that He’s done something for you!
You got clothes on your back A roof over your head He kept you in your craziness He sustained you He’s been good to you He woke you up this morning
But the question is, what has He done in you, or what have you allowed Him to do in you?
See, the problem is we are hard of hearing… look at vs. 11:
11 About this, we have much to say, and it is hard to explain since you have become dull of hearing. [1]
First point: You must have the Discipline to Listen
We must have the spiritual discipline to listen. People suffer from “Inattention.” People lose interest in the word within minutes The Hebrew believer had become mentally lazy and spiritually complacent, they were sitting and listening to the preachers and teachers, but they were not paying attention. Col. 1:10 (ESV) So as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God[2] 2 Tim. 2:15 (ESV) Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth[3] 1 Peter 1:13 (ESV) Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ[4]
Second Point: The Enemy is After Your Ear!
He’s after your eye gate, the things you see, and your ear gate You can’t give everyone your ear because it’s a gate to your spirit You need to limit your child’s time on social media, I was watching the news one night, and it was a 12yrs girl who committed suicide just from being bullied on social media. That’s why the Bible says in Prov. 22:6: To train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. You need to spend more time in God’s Word Romans 10:17: So then Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
Spiritual Maturity is not acting on impulse
Phil. 4:6: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. [5] Hebrews 4 teaches us that we need Sabbath Rest.
I had to learn when I got too busy; I messed up my Spiritual maturity I became too busy for Jesus You are running, trying to be the best grand momma Trying to get enough OT in at work You are trying to fix everybody, but internally you are messed up yourself.
Ep. 4:14- 15: So that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, [6]
· Heb 5:12: For though by this time, you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,
· He says by now; you should be teaching others, but you are still on Similac
o It is dangerous to be on Similac; it has killed children and made others sick
· As a matter of fact, the church now is dealing with people who are Corona casualties; they have gotten used to not serving in church, not attending church, or even tunning in online.
· They didn’t die physically, but they died spiritually
· Don’t allow the world to make you spiritually dead; stay in the Word
See what you have been through God can take
o That pain
o That bad experience
o That testimony of what God has brought you out of
o God wants to use you to minister to someone else
o God didn’t save you to sit; He saved you to serve
o Every week you should be encouraging someone to tune into church with you
So, he says by now, you should be teaching others. Solid food is for the mature, who have some practice in telling right from wrong.
A mature person goes beyond:
· Just attending worship and Bible studies
· Just giving money
· Just reading the Bible
· Just praying
A Mature believer:
· He studies the Word of God
· He sets a time to pray and worship every day
· He keeps his mind and thoughts on Christ
· He witnesses for Christ
· He able to discern good and evil
A mature believer knows:
· When to look and when not to look
· When to eat and when not to eat
· What to drink and what not to drink
· What socials to attend and which ones not to attend
· Where Christ is really preached and taught and where He is not
· The mature believer lives for Christ
Eph. 4:23: And to be renewed in the spirit of your minds[7]
Is there anybody who God has grown you up, and you may not be who you wanna be, but you are not what you used to be!
God’s building you, and when He builds you
· Your life should be
· Your attitude is better
· Your discipline is better
· Your prayer life is better
· Your marriage should be better
· Your walk with God is better
That God is building you, and you are no longer a Similac saint! Isa. 26:3-4: You keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you.
4 Trust in the Lord forever,
for the Lord Godis an everlasting rock.[8]
What is it that God is pushing you to that cannot wait?
That God is doing something in your life, and you are grateful for!
