(Q) Recap last week:
Romans 5: In Adam or in Christ…without Jesus we are born into sin and need a savior.
But what made Jesus so special that he could be our savior? That’s what we’re going to talk about today.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
(H) Do you ever have things you KNOW, but are HARD to UNDERSTAND?
(H) Do you ever have things you KNOW, but are HARD to UNDERSTAND?
Like you know the answer but it’s hard to explain?
Or maybe you know that it works, without knowing how it works…like our PHONES? Electricity, etc.
Happens often w/ FAITH.
Today we’re talking about WHO JESUS WAS/IS, and how he was BOTH GOD and MAN…which is something we know, but can be difficult to understand…
But here’s the good news, EVEN the BIBLE says this is a MYSTERY!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paul writing to his spiritual son Timothy:
1 Timothy 3:16 NLT Without question, this is the great mystery of our faith: Christ was revealed in a human body and vindicated by the Spirit. He was seen by angels and announced to the nations. He was believed in throughout the world and taken to heaven in glory.
It was GOD’S MYSTERIOUS PLAN, that we can never fully understand in this life!
Who Jesus was…He was FULLY GOD and FULLY MAN…one of the HARDEST TRUTHS for us to understand as humans
He’s part of the GODHEAD, the Father, the Son, and the Spirit…but how does this all work? It’s IMPOSSIBLE TO FULLY UNDERSTAND…No analogy can hold! He’s too great
Tozer - If I can completely understand all that God is then he is not worthy of my worship

JESUS’ DEITY:
Before Jesus was born, he was God from ETERNITY PAST.
John 1:1-3 NLT In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He existed in the beginning with God. 3 God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.
John 1:14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
John 1:18 NLT No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.
JESUS came to EARTH to REVEAL the FATHER
Colossians 1:15-20 NLT Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, 16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. 17 He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. 18 Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything. 19 For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, —-
This proves that Jesus wasn’t just a man, but he is divine, he is God!

JESUS’ HUMANITY: Jesus was born of Mary, who was a virgin, and that is how he was the son of God and the son of man…
Discussion of worldview…natural vs. supernatural. Part of being a Christian requires faith in God’s supernatural ability to do whatever!
Matthew 1:18-25 NLT This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly.
Joseph was done! He was going to break up with her.
20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: 23 “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’ ”
24 When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. 25 But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.
I find it funny that Matthew put this here as a sidenote…like just in case you were wondering…
Jesus came down to earth, humbling himself from eternity past to reveal God to the world and to save us from sin…He didn’t cease to be God, but took on the natural limitations of a human body…because he loved us so much!! Saw an analogy of a boxer with a hand tied behind his back…he never ceased to be an amazing boxer, but decided to limit himself for whatever reason…that is what Jesus’ humanity did in essence.
A lot of people can accept Jesus as a man, and a good moral teacher, but that isn’t enough…
------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the end it still requires faith. Faith to believe when we don’t understand. It will never make 100% sense, it will not always be 100% explainable and easy to understand…but it’s what the Bible teaches and what I and so many of us have given our lives to believing…
If we truly believe what the Bible says about Jesus…then he is worth everything.
If he was just a traveling teacher, former carpenter, that tried to get people to be nice, that doesn’t really matter…but if he really came down to reveal God to us…then that should transform our lives and the decisions we make every day!!
