Hook:
Picasso “The meaning of Life is to find your gift.
The purpose of life is to give it away”
Eleanor Rosevelt “The purpose of life is to live it, taste experience to the utmost”
Dalai Lama “The purpose of life is to be happy”
unkown “the purpose of life is the life of purpose”
Ellen “I believe we were all put on this planet for a purpose and we all have different purposes”
What is the PURPOSE of LIFE?
That is clearly the most important question we can ever ask.
The answer literally determines what we do every day, every hour, every second.
BECAUSE anything that doesn’t fulfill our purpose is useless.
What would Jr high students say the purpose of life is?
What would most high school students say the purpose of life is?
What do Christian students think on this topic?
lifes purpose
Westminster Catechism - The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever
But if our ULTIMATE GOAL in life is to glorify God - we better KNOW how to do that - it should consume us
Thesis: So we first need to understand WHAT the Glory of God is, and secondly HOW to give it to Him.
What the glory of God is
What is a guitar?
What is red?
See God’s Glory is more like a color than it is a guitar - if you’ve never seen a guitar and I describe it to you, you would be able to recognize it in the future.
But with red I’d need to point out to you enough red things (strawberry, angry bird, clifford, target, stop sign) before you came to an understanding of all that RED is.
God’s glory is understood not because we say it but because we SEE it.
and WHERE DO WE SEE IT?
Isaiah 6:3 “And one called out to another and said, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory.””
What does holy mean?
You’d think the whole world is filled with his holiness but the whole world is filled with his glory
So we can begin to understand God’s glory to mean the manifest beauty of his holiness
John Piper says “It is the going public of His holiness”
So the glory of God is his holiness manifested to us - it is the totality of who God is - his Glory is the radiance of His character
How to give it to Him
Now that we have a better understanding what the glory of God is, we need to figure out how we give him glory - since stated earlier that is our life purpose
1 Cor 10:31 “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
1 Cor 6:19-20 “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.”
Psalm 19 says that creation was designed for Gods glory
Col 1:16 “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.”
Groups: If God’s glory is the manifestation of his holiness or the manifestation of who He is, than how do we glorify Him?
The best way I can describe it is by pointing to Moses
Ex 33:17-23
Ex 34:29-35
Moses looked upon God and went away glowing, his face shone, he saw God’s glory and reflected it to others
That is big picture how we are to do the same thing - when we look to Christ who is Heb 1 “The radiance of God’s Glory” - we must go away reflecting what we have seen
And if God’s glory is character manifested to us, where do you think we see the culmination of God’s character - a perfect expression of every attribute of God?
The Cross
God’s sovereignty is displayed by orchestrating the event
God’s justice is displayed by punishing sin
God’s love is displayed by sacrificing his Son to take our punishment
God’s mercy is displayed by not putting us on the cross
God’s power is displayed by Jesus’ resurrecting from the dead
God’s kindness is displayed by inviting you to repent and believe in this truth
You can glorify God today by surrendering your life to Him, turning from your sin, placing your faith in the gospel as the only hope of salvation
I hope you all come to see God’s glory in this life before you see it in the next.
Now - we didn’t get to the practical daily ways of glorifying God BUT thats what small groups are for so in small groups seek ways to glorify God THIS WEEK and DO THEM!
