The Woman

Review

Jesus had a powerful argument with the Jewish elites.

Where he was able to destroy them with there own pride and hypocrisy

Now we have the chance to change things up a bit.

This text is absent from all of the oldest manuscripts. But there is nothing in it unworthy of sound doctrine.

What we can see here is the nature and Character of Jesus.

Read John 8:1-11

John 8:1–11 NASB95

1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, 4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. 5 “Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?” 6 They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. 7 But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. 10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.”

We see here a change, Jesus is preaching and teaching, debating with the Jews. after this he went to the mount of Olives

v. 1-2

Jesus returns to the temple to teach the people.

v. 3-4

John 8:3–4 NASB95

3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, 4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act.

These Jewish elites bring to Jesus a woman that was caught in the act of adultery, in the very act.

meaning that this woman was caught while doing it.

I ask myself many questions about this.

how was this woman caught in the act? where they planning this?

where was the man? she was certainly now doing this alone.

why was it just her on trial?

v. 5-6

5 “Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?” 6 They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground.

The Jews were trying to outwit Jesus.

The quoted the law of Moses , they were hoping to trap Him.

how many of you ever had someone attempted to discredit you as a Christian

or try to use the Bible

These men are quoting Deuteronomy 22:22

Deuteronomy 22:22 NASB95

22 “If a man is found lying with a married woman, then both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman; thus you shall purge the evil from Israel.

Leviticus 20:10 NASB95

10 ‘If there is a man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, one who commits adultery with his friend’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

So, even with them quoting the law of Moses, they are not quoting all of the scripture.

They make a case for the woman, but not the man.

When using the scripture for your benefit or your case.

They were testing Jesus (Matt 16:1, Mark 18:1)

v. 7-8

7 But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.

Jesus tell them what to do.

To throw the stone at her......If there were any among them that was without sin.

Then Jesus stooped down and wrote of the ground.

What was he writing???????

v.9

John 8:9 NASB95

9 When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court.

This is a check mate!!!!

These men had nothing to say., and if you see here that the older ones left first. Then the rest.

leaving Jesus standing and the woman alone.

She is still standing in the center of the court.

v.10-11

John 8:10–11 NASB95

10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.”

now that all of this woman’s accusers have gone. She is left with Jesus in the middle of the court.

The woman is left there with Jesus.

Jesus asks her who is left to condemn (Kreen-o) you? To judge, to judge one who is guilty, to punish you

She looks and can see that no one is there to condemn her. She says “No one Lord” She is seeing that Jesus is Lord. He is great.

Jesus says that he doesn't either

Jesus the Great Judge.

This woman stands before Jesus the only one that has the authority and right to completely judge and destroy her .

Jesus is the one who had ever right to throw a stone at her.

Her sin is clear, and she is completely guilty. But we see Jesus forgiving her,

not only that, but gives her instructions. (sin no more)

Jesus is telling this woman to turn away from her sin.

This is an amazing story. A story that tells use about the charterer and nature of Our Lord.

But lets look into this some more.

at times we view this story from the perspective of the woman.

Woman

we are in sin

we are being judged by others

we are not understood,

and most likely those who are in sin with us is not with us.

But what if we looked at this from a different perspective

that of the people

The people

are we picking which sin is worse then another

are we focusing another person’s sin over our own?

We are ready to destroy others for these sin.

do we wrongly use parts of the Bible to justify our abuse.

Maybe we need to rethink all of our views.

Jesus has every right to destroy us because of our sin. But His Grace and love for us allows us He has given us Salvation.

this woman did nothing to save herself from her sin

we have done nothing to save ourselves

we sit. RiGht now in the middle of the court, guilty facing the only one that has the power, authority, and right to destroy us.

our salvation is not our doing.
