intro and Tension

Don’t you find - We are either, giving, or recieving? We are either, pouring out, or pouring in? Resting, or working? Don’t you ever find, that we can never find the rhythm?
How then do we, maintian being filled, while filling others.
We are in a sermon series, which is annual theme | Come Together | Going through the Book of acts | How did they Live together | Face challenges | How that applies to us today
Week 1: A divided world needs a united Church
Week 2: We choose to be devoted? To change, each other, eating together, Praying Faithfully
Today, we talk about our personal role in community, our call to pour, and how to sustain that pouring
Title: We are better together
Hope: You will realise your role in the Body - You are required to build community and you will take a step toward becoming activated in our community for Christ.
Key Text
Acts 2:44 ESV
And all who believed were together and had all things in common.
Acts 2:45 ESV
And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
What a statemment | Let’s unpack this a little bit | early Church Unity at the reception of the apostles teaching, mark of restored communtiy of the last days |
Where else will there be a community like this?
Revelation 7:9–10 ESV
After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
Foreshadowing of Heaven | it’s the “Already/Not Yet” Phase | Nuences of this word is broken up into “Him” “Her” etc. Greek word is so interesting | Used to describe Adam and Eve, and what they had | Used to describe harmony |
Romans 12:4–5 ESV
For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
What does this mean? It means, that we are better together
says all things in heaven
Common = Koinos - Comes from Koinonia | Who knew - Unity in the important things | Diversity in the others = Ancient Proverbial Definition of Friendship is “To have all things in common”.
ubuntu i am because we are
So out of this place - We need to get there first | Selling their posessions | This moves from transactional kindess - to unassuming, self-giving, meeting of physical needs - across all socioeconomic boundaries | Lamens term = It doesn’t matter who you are, if you have a need, it gets filled.
Selling possessions = as any had need, not everyone sold everything, they had possessions, not a commune, just caring, just imitating heaven on earth. Caring
What a community - Who wants to be a part of that community?

Truth

So the question is HOW?
let’s go through it.
Kid rivalrie - Behaviour starts with you.
Starts with YOU.
1st thing we are going to do: Choose to be a blessing
We must learn to be spiritual contributors, instead of spiritual cosumers but understand how we can sustain ourselves in that process.
What I hope you’ll understand is that Every interaction is an opportunity to add value.
Everyone you see, everyone you meet
Opportunity to bless, add value, be generous, show the love of God.
Why? Because you have the Spirit inside you.
When you treat someone this way you display Jesus in you.
We will not add value accidently - Why? Because our flesh is focused on ourselves |
Look at photo of 8 people, who do you look at first | if you look good = great photo, not good = bad photo |
Same thing when we interact with people | “Do they like me?” “Was that stupid?” change dialogue “Be a blessing to this person”
Ephesians 4:29 ESV
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
When you walk in room = Climate improves | You’re a blessing | People are going to be more blessed, loved, generous |
This is actually faithfulness to God.
Makes you more like Jesus. When Disciples worried what did he say? He didn’t say: Oh yes, government going to kill you | He said: “Don’t worry about what you’re gonna eat, or clothes, etc Your heavenly father cares, cares about birdies, so surely he cares about you. Enough worries, just seek the kingdom of God.
Woman sinned, caught in adultury, Jesus didn’t say: “Shame on you you pathetic people” - He knelt down and wrote in sand | Jesus looked with Love, where are your acusers?” Jesus said “I don’t condem you, don’t sin anymore - Be rightous”
Peter Denied Jesus 3 times - What did Jesus do? “Your cancelled, can’t trust you” He said “Do you still love me? Go feed my sheep, show my love, he forgave”
**Jesus on the weay to the cross chose to wash the disciples feet**
Jesus said “I came to show the love of the father, you can do greater things when I go away, sending the Holy Spirit” - You build up, show grace | Be blessing | You have no idea What one word might do for someone | Faithfulness to God.
Thomas Mum, taking over the Church -
Be a blessing to someone | You may be feeling it, to reach out | Be an encouragement
ok 2nd thing we do.
Understand our Role within God’s Church
1 Corinthians 12:25–26 ESV
that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
Paul, just spoke about how the Body works | Same Concern for one another | Do we show this?
We are here to Serve In HIS Church
Church = Ecclesia = “The called out ones” - is not a building - Church is the people - We are called to serve His People
1 Corinthians 13 - talks about the way in which we are to love each other | Paul certainly talking about a Community of Believers | Calls us to live out our lives togehter with respect, self-sacrafice and love.
1 Corinthians 13:4–7 ESV
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Does not envy or boast | Gives glory to God
is not arrogant | Instead, humble
Does not insist on it’s own way | God’s Way
irratable, resentful | Rejoice in wrongdoing - Rejoices with the truth. etc.
He then goes onto say;
1 Corinthians 13:11–12 ESV
When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
Paul uses 2 analogies here; a child and a mirror - He is asking us to grow up - To be mature in the faith | Put all the worldly stuff aside, and love one another |
Amazing mirror then = Polished Bronze= We can reflect God, through our actions, through what’s reflected in Human reality.
Paul talking about a manner of conduct that must show itself in the lives of believers - Foremost in the way they minister to one another in the body of Christ - and their behaviour outside the body.
What do we do?
Philippians 2:14–15 ESV
Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,
Philippians 2:16 ESV
holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.
Holding first | Fast | tight | with one hand - Reach out with the other hand - reach out.
We talked abou the Vine - It’s not about holding onto one or the other - We reach to the one who saves with one arm - We reach out with the other. it’s not an “Or” thing” it’s an “And” thing.
How did the Early Church get it right?
Looking back, they where concerned with relationships
To their Teachers, to each other in love, to God in worship, to the world in outreach. day by day, hour by hour - It wasn’t “This or that” it was all of it. Reaching with one hand,
What do we do?
We Be concerned about our relationships
Teachers in learning | Each other in love | God in worshio | World in outreach
They had a deep concern for their relationships
Reach to the one that cares with one hand | Out with the other
Acts 2:44–45 ESV
And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
A foreshadow of Heaven | A Community that Supports | Loves | Cares | Were TOGETHER | HAD ALL THINGS IN COMMON.
It’s not going to happen by accident | Intentional | You’re invited |
A Divided world needs a united church | We stand together | Against 1 enemy | For one mission | We devote ourselves to the things of GOD to bring ourselves CLOSE to GOD.
From that place | We come together.
We Choose to be a blessing - You’re here for someone |
We understand our role is to serve in HIS Church - The building yes but HIS people
We get concerned about relationships
God wanted a relationship so much...
