What is your life?
What is your life?
I want to start with a quote that some give credit to Abraham Lincoln, “It is not the years in your life that count – it is the life in your years.”
We need to make each day count. Each of us needs to ask ourselves the question, “What is the purpose of my life? Why am I here?”
The Psalmist David came to the conclusion that life is short. He said,
“Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.
You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure.
James asked the question
James 4:14 (NIV)
What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
Even the longest life seems to vanish ever so quickly, but I am here to give you hope today. We have been promised more than this life.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
As we put our faith in Jesus, as we follow Him, He has promised us life that will never end. Even though this life seems so short, we will live forever. John Newton wrote, “When we’ve been there 10000 years bright shining as the sun, we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise, then when we first begun.”
So…What is your life?
In Philippians 1:21 Paul the Apostle said,
For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
For me to live is Christ
For me to live is Christ
Brothers and sisters, my prayer is that each one of us would be able to say, “For me to live is Christ.” We can put our trust in the things that we have, we can put our trust in the things that we do, but you will do nothing greater in your life than to surrender your life to Jesus Christ and follow Him all the days of your life.
On Tuesday of this week, Emosi told me some of Joe’s story. He told me of his journey, his heart surgery, how he grew and enjoyed rugby, and how he had become a hard worker. I asked Him about Joe’s commitment to Christ and he had said that as a young child Josef had given his life to Jesus. If you have never done this, you will never make a more important decision than to follow Jesus.
I want to tell a story of a young man who gave his life to Jesus completely regardless of what the cost might be. Eric Liddell was an athlete that competed in the Olympics in 1924. He was a specialist in the 100 meter race. He once there he found out that the heats would be held on the Lord’s Day so he made the decision not to run. Instead he ran the 400 meter race which he hadn’t trained for. He won.
After the Olympics, he felt God’s call on his life to be a missionary in China. He died at 43 years old, but it was the life in his years that counted. It’s not the years in your life, but the life in your years. You can make a difference. You can be Jesus hands and feet every day to those you meet.
To die is gain
To die is gain
This statement baffles people that are only living for this life. How can dying be better than living. The only way that dying could be gain is that there is life after death.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;
Jesus has promised us that there is more to come. It takes faith to believe this.
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for, being convinced of what we do not see.
When the disciples heard that Jesus was going to die, their hopes were dashed. They had spent three years with Him and now he was going to die.
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.
In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
And you know the way to where I am going.”
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus is the way that we can experience life beyond this life. Psalm 16:11
You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
HOW BIG IS JESUS????????
At the end of a worship service, a little girl came up to her Pastor and asked, "How big is Jesus?"
The puzzled pastor pondered and said, "I don’t know, sweetheart. The Bible doesn’t say. He was a carpenter, so I am sure he had big hands and strong shoulders. Maybe he was 6 feet tall. I just don’t know. Why do you ask that question?"
The little girl looked down and said, "Welllllllll, Pastor, you said I had to ask Jesus into my heart. I am just a little girl.
If He is a big Savior and he comes into my heart.......won’t he STICK OUT?"
Wow. (Larry Petton, SC)
In closing, my question is this, “If He is a big Savior and he comes into my heart.......won’t he STICK OUT?"
That’s the whole point. Will you let Jesus stick out so that others can see Him. Often we think that our faith is personal, it’s private. Nothing is farther from the truth. Let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.
So…What is your life?
It’s a mist! But even though it is so short, Let’s make every day count where we can say, “For me to live is Christ...”
Let’s pray!
Now may the Lord bless you, may He keep you, may He make His face to shine on you, may He be gracious to you, may He lift up His countenance towards you and give you peace.
In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
