BIG IDEA The practical effects of the redeemed are to always create and necessitate components of redemption to the unredeemed both by time and tongue. There are two reasons for that 1. They have been in that position but not any longer, 2. They have the knowledge which gives them the power to live wisely
Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone [NIV]
1. Be wise in the way you act. The verb used is a figurative way of describing a lifestyle or to tread all around such as; a walk at large specifically, it could mean as proof of ability.
· Our Lord demonstrated his proof of ability by walking on the water in matt 14:25.
· The crippled man from birth demonstrated healing power by leaping and walking ( Acts 14:10)
This is a command for believers in Colossae to demonstrate a trait that utilizes knowledge and experience through common sense and insight to people who are not Christians why?
Ø They are saints and are faithful ( 1:2)
Ø They have faith in the Lord Jesus and love for the saints (1:4)
Ø They have a hope laid up in heaven ( 1:5)
Ø Paul ceaseless prays for them to be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding so that they may walk worthy of the Lord, bearing fruit and increasing in the knowledge of God(1:9-10)
Ø Been redeemed and forgiven through the blood of Jesus (1:14)
etc.
b.make the most of every opportunity. How should they walk in wisdom towards outsiders? By efficiently use of time as making the best use of time.
· To buy back or buy out it was used in the slave market to buy a slave and set him or her free.
· To buy up to gain something advantageously.
· Time. Kairos opportunity or occasion.
There is a similar instruction in Ephesians 5:16 “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil[1]
Illustration: Daniel 2:8 Then the king answered, “I am certain that you are trying to gain time because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided:
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole ( Galatians 3:13)
Believers are to buy time in being prudent and displaying a blameless lifestyle, in their case, they were to gain as much time and opportunity as possible in the circumstance of persecution and death can timelessly mean not to let suitable moments or occasions pass unnoticed but to own it.
[1] The New International Version (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2011), Eph 5:15–16. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone [NIV]
Let your Conversation be always full of grace · Allow things that come from your mouth either by words said, thoughtful expression, or topic be filled with agreeable and acceptableness
· Seasoned with salt. This is a figure of speech that Paul uses to bring the point to reality.
Salt is a white crystalline substance used to season and preserve food.
Our this about it Mark 9:50 Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.”
Matt 5:13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.[1]

· They are to flavor their speech with salt, that way they will be able to answer each person. It is also believed that there was a Salt Lake near Colossae which could present a possibility of relevance for the metaphor.
One can only have a tasty and life-giving speech if they are regenerated from the inside.
