1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
Our words can hurt someone more than our actions can
God’s Word teaches the tongue is an evil thing.
The problem with the tongue is the problem of the heart.
Peter - thou are the Christ the Son of the liveth
one minute we can speak from heaven
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
When our tongue is out of order it means our heart is out of order
Study the tongue and the word words
mouth
The tongue can be so wild, vile, and out of control James says
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
It can’t be tamed, how profound
That’s what it means
Filthiness means shamefulness or obscenity.
When we are not of the spirit we, as
Obscenity means indecency, lewdness, or profanity - crudeness, dirtiness
So the Lord is very clear that these types of words should not be a part of a Christians life
“…nor foolish talking, nor jesting,...” mischief, mischievousness - jesting is empty conversation, that is void of value.
There are times we are out of line or there would not be a warning in this portion of Scripture.
It is indeed a high calling to imitate God and to walk in love after the measure of Christ; but it will be impossible unless we open our innermost heart to the Holy Spirit. We must not only sacrifice ourselves for others, but there should be a fragrance in all that we do. “An odor of a sweet smell.” Note carefully the injunctions of Eph 5:3-4, especially as they concern speech. It is by our speech that we betray the true condition of our hearts.
We must be as distinct from the worldly as light is from darkness. There should be no twilight in our testimony for our Lord, though there may be considerable obscurity in our views of truth.
Things that are out of place
We must learn to be sensitive to the spirit of God
We don’t need to say everything we think
There are warnings about the tongue.
26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
We can talk all day about how we love the Lord
but if we don’t bridle our tongue
Seems religious - but speaks evil of someone else
This is why
34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
This is the problem with you and I
When we speak evil of another brother or sister
Authorities
Words that are spoken in anger and rage
Arguments
Verbal fighting
The Lord points to the heart as the problem
“I said that but I really don’t mean it” - then you wouldn’t have said it
Turn to:
35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
You know you have a good heart when you speak good things - and the opposite is also true
What if you said - I just love that person
If you speak evil it’s because of evil treasure in the heart
Every Idle word - that is incredible
We must bridle our heart
Well they are wrong - dont speak evil
thou shalt be justified or condemned by thy words
So the question is can we control our words
It’s us if we cant control our mouth
14 Let the words of my mouth, And the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.
What I meditate on is important
If you meditate on the negatives of a person
On a church
On your husband, ladies
On your wife, men
Read
James 3:1-18
But rather giving of thanks
The reason our mouth gets out of order is because our heart is not thankful
Heart filled with gratitude and thankfulness
David fighting Goliath
Goliath spoke words against Israel
For 40 days
Fearful words were spoken
Words that paralyzed an army
Words that we speak should not paralyze but encourage
Goliath is cursing and defying
David comes on the scene and says what’s going on
You will never have victory if you dont control your mouth
You will never have victory if you criticize others in your heart
We are completely responsible for every word we speak
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
We are responsible
2. Our Words reveal what is truly in our heart
34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
3. Our words our tongue speak remind us daily to purify our heart.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Double mindedness is coming to church and speaking nice words and yell at our family at home
4. Ask forgiveness immediately after hurtful words are spoken
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Stop immediately after saying something hurtful and apologize
Hurt feelings with words just yesterday, … I’m sorry
to my wife, and to my children
Stop right at the beginning of
5. Offer your heart to the Lord daily
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
6. Align your heart with God’s spirit by daily reading and obeying His Word
9 BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word.
The way you fix the words, is listening to the Word
7. Learn the art of saying words that encourage, comfort, inspire, and edify.
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Be edifying - build people up
Consider others
This gathering is supposed to be doing something
edifying
I love you - some of you need to start loving on others
8. Encourage your family and friends to tell us when we hurt them with our words.
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
Bridle - pull the reigns and control the direction
It is shocking what hurt can be caused by an un
3 Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; Keep the door of my lips.
Set a watch - like a city that is watching for enemies
1 I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
At all times - Continually
Do you speak health into others
Dont let our problems rob us of praise
8 Let my mouth be filled with thy praise And with thy honour all the day.
All the day
1 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: With my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.
We have children and sometimes it’s hard
30 I will greatly praise the Lord with my mouth; Yea, I will praise him among the multitude.
108 Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O Lord, And teach me thy judgments.
Freewill offerings - everything i say should be acceptable
If we don’t get this giant, it will kill those who are closest to us - the ones we should be protecting
