The Twofold Ministry of the Messiah

Christ’s first Coming

Isaiah 9:1–2 ESV
But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
Zebulun and Naphtali are on the northern border in NE Galilee west of the Jordan River.
they were the 1st target of Assyria’s invasion.
Early time (the invasion) were Dark Days
Later Times: glorious as Messiah arrives
NT applies this to Galilee’s honor during Christ’s 1st advent
Matthew 4:12–16 ESV
Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.”
Its ultimate fulfillment will happen in the 2nd advent when all invaders are removed
A Great Light
Messiah’s arrival is illustrated as a great light dispelling the darkness of captivity
John 1:4–5 ESV
In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

2. Christ second coming

Isaiah 9:3–5 ESV
You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.
Isaiah 9:7 ESV
Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
The Lord again confirms His covenant made first with Abraham
Genesis 22:17 ESV
I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies,
Israel will ultimately be free
Peace will follow the return of Christ
This is a worldwide peace
betwen nations
Between peoples
Between animals even
Think Garden of Eden restored
The second advent is what we are looking forward to today
It is called our Blessed Hope
1 Corinthians 15:50–58 ESV
I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

The twofold Nature of the Messiah

The Messiah will be born as a human baby

Isaiah 9:6 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:7 ESV
Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Jesus is the son of David
heir to David’s throne
King of Israel
Mary, his mother is a direct descendant and Joseph, His step brother is as well
Jesus in the flesh has a direct claim to David’s throne
Wonderful Counselor
Jesus will discharge His office with supernatural wisdom
Mighty God
As God, there is no limit to His might
Nehemiah 9:32 ESV
“Now, therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love, let not all the hardship seem little to you that has come upon us, upon our kings, our princes, our priests, our prophets, our fathers, and all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria until this day.
Everlasting Father
He will eternally be a Father to His people
He will be like David and compassionately care for His people.
Prince of Peace
Perpetual peace on Earth will be the rule of the day

2. The Messiah will be sent as gift from Heaven

Isaiah 9:6 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Messiah is also a gift from heaven
He is Emmanuel, God with us
FULLY Divine and FULLY human
It is HIS divine nature that makes all of the promises possible
He IS God
