13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
purpose of epistle is the same as the gospel of John (John 20:31)
31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
believe that Jesus is the Christ, not just that He lived, etc.
belief is one of the ways that we love and obey God, and if we love God, we will do His commandments and love others
6 And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
The stronger our faith is, the closer we’ll be to God, and thus will obey Him better
“oh ye of little faith” - calming of the storm
3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. 4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.
all of the commandments are connected in this way if we love God and love our neighbor
God gave us a wonderful way/”system” of life, that we’re able to have a relationship with Him
“that ye may KNOW” - assurance
so he wrote this letter so that we believe, and so we have assurance, according to this verse (5:13) “stand boldly before God”
14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
what a blessing that God hears us and knows our heart
We can’t just ask God for any old thing, it can’t be a sinful thing, or something not in God’s will
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? 12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. 22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
We see an element of faith, we must believe!

14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
6 In my distress I called upon the Lord,
And cried unto my God:
He heard my voice out of his temple,
And my cry came before him, even into his ears.
29 The Lord is far from the wicked:
But he heareth the prayer of the righteous.
How amazing that the God of the universe hears us, knows us, and loves us!
15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
wages of sin is death (spiritual death) , adam and even, etc...
We should pray for our brothers who sin, so that they may repent
John is saying that there is sin which can bring death, and doesn’t tell us to pray for them
John does not give us specifics here, and it likely depends on the situations and intents
EXAMPLES
1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
We all sin, even after being saved
being closer to God and obeying Him more and more is a lifelong process
18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
as children of God, we are changed, we are a new creation
26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
our new birth is not just a moment, again it’s a continuing thing through life
We are protected from the devil, because we are indwelt by the Spirit of God, who is our great protector
Since Christ renews our hearts and minds, we are also also more and more resistant to temptation and are protected from the devil and his temptations in this way
19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
We must either choose Christ or the world, there is now inbetween
30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.
62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
18 Remember ye not the former things, Neither consider the things of old.
19 Behold, I will do a new thing; Now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, And rivers in the desert.
20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
God will show us things if we ask Him
reading the Bible after asking God for understanding
we KNOW these things, we are able to KNOW Him that is true, and be children of God
“And he justly ascribes to Christ this office of illuminating our minds as to the knowledge
of God. For, as he is the only true image of the invisible God, as he is the only interpreter
of the Father, as he is the only guide of life, yea, as he is the life and light of the world and
the truth, as soon as we depart from him, we become vain in our own devices.
And Christ is said to have given us an understanding, not only because he shews us in
the gospel what sort of being is the true God, and also illuminates us by his Spirit; but because
in Christ himself we have God manifested in the flesh, as Paul says, since in him dwells all
the fullness of the Deity, and are hid all the treasures of knowledge and wisdom. (Colossians
2:9.) Thus it is that the face of God in a manner appears to us in Christ; not that there was
no knowledge, or a doubtful knowledge of God, before the coming of Christ,, but that now
he manifests himself more fully and more clearly. And this is what Paul says in 2 Corinthians
4, that God, who formerly commanded light to shine out of darkness at the creation of the world, hath now shone in our hearts through the brightness of the knowledge of his glory in the
face of Christ.”
21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
it’s imperative that God is what we prioritize the most in our life
“Let us then remember that we ought carefully to continue in the spiritual worship of God” - spirit and truth
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
since much of this epistle talked about false teachers/teachings, this is yet another thing we must guard against
we do this by asking God for understanding, being closer to Him, and reading His word
Many people, if they would actually read the Bible, would realize that maybe their belief system or church is wrong
tell story about how when the common man got their hands on Bibles all of a sudden the reformation happened
