Ehud The Deliverer
looking at the subject of deliverance
deliverance is done through a deliverer
a woman stuck in a car in the middle of a flooded river
the fire department sends a man to rescue her from danger
the deliverer goes out with a rope and flotation device to bring her to safety
the Israelites were doing evil, so God had to take them to the woodshed.
the Israelites cried for mercy
Judges 3:15 (LEB)
And the Israelites cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjaminite and a left-handed man.
And the Israelites sent a tribute to Eglon king of Moab through him.
Ehud killed the king and with the volunteer army, destroyed the Moabite army.
and brought peace to the nation
Here in Zechariah the Lord will deliver Jerusalem from Alexander the Great
read Zechariah 9 1-10
PRAY
The Conquest
Alexander the Great is going to conquer the world around Israel
this is a prophecy that is still 150 years away
this is the legs of bronze of Daniels prophecy
this is when he will come near and into Israel
Damascus, Hamath, and Hadrach are to the north
Tyre was on the mainland but they were destroyed so they rebuilt on an Island
with a double 150 foot wall surrounding the Island
with it’s ports and trade vessels it made itself wealthy
Alexander did what the other conquers could not do
he took the building blocks from the old city and build a causeway to the Island
we give Alexander the credit but it was really God
Zechariah 9:4 (LEB)
Look!
The Lord will drive it out and will hurl its outer ramparts into the sea, and it will be consumed by fire.
now Alexander is heading south
after this time the Philistines will turn to God and be apart of Israel
At this time we need to look at the historian Josephus to fill in some gaps
as Alexander is defeating the Philistines which takes quite a while
He asks for supplies from Jerusalem.
the high priest refuses being loyal to the Persians
Alexander then goes to Egypt who surrenders immediately
Alexander then returns to destroy Jerusalem
on the way he receives a dream that he will meet the High priest and that he will not destroy Jerusalem
the high priest also receives a dream that he should wear his high preisty garments and with 3 other priests dressed in white
they meet Alexander on the road to Jerusalem where Alexander bows to the God that the high priest represents
Alexander is shown this Prophecy
Jesus the Deliverer will be on guard in Jerusalem to deliver them from the invasion by Alexander
the Jews at the time of Zechariah were worried about their safety
the walls were not built as of yet
the people around them were not exactly friendly
they needed reassurance
so God sent them this prophecy
of a deliverer who is in their midst
did they deserve God’s deliverance
did the people at the time of Ehud deserve anything good
no they were in trouble and they turned to God
the Israelites in Egypt needed a deliverer and turned to God
He gave them Moses to bring them out of bondage
again did they deserve it?
they were heathens
all though history God has provided a deliverer
Jesus Our Deliverer
all of these Old testament examples are a shadow of Jesus
lets look at this next verse in context
Jesus is coming as a deliverer
not to deliver them from tyranny of the Romans
but from the Tyranny of sin
why was it that they always needed a deliverer?
because of their sin
always turned from God and to other gods
turn to Judges 6
6-1 did evil
6-7 called out to God
6-7 prophet is sent to remind the people of what God has done
6-10 don’t fear their gods
6 11 Jesus came to Gideon
6 13 where is this great God?
6 28 the men of the city wants to murder the person who cut down the false gods worship
over and over the people needed a deliverer because of their sin
Rejoice greatly your ultimate deliverer is coming
the one who will save His people from their sins
so why couldn't they just stop sinning and going into captivity
because of their heart
We need a deliverer to save us from ourselves
we are born in sin
we are born with a sin nature
our mind is corrupt
we are born a slave to sin
we are in need of a deliverer to buy us out of this slavery
we need a God that is capable of changing us into new creations
we need to be born again
turn to John 3
Jesus our deliverer is explaining this concept with Nicodemus
3-3 you must be born from above to be able to come into the kingdom
3-5 born of the Spirit
3-6 there is a difference between flesh and Spirit
3-14 Jesus must be crucified
3-18 we are already condemned if we do not believe
