The Holy Spirit: Who He is and What He Does

John 14:16, 17, 26; 15:26; 16:7-15.

The Holy Spirit is mentioned over 100 times in the Old Testament.

In the New Testament, He is mentioned in over 261 verses: 56 times in the Gospels, 57 times in Acts, 112 times in the Pauline Epistles, and 36 times in the remaining New Testament.

Here in our text, 22 pronouns are used in the verses in John that speak of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus had a great deal to say about the Holy Spirit in His Upper Room message.

Apart from the help of the Holy Spirit, we cannot live the Christian life. It is impossible to live.

We must know who the Holy Spirit is, and what He does.

1. Who is the Holy Spirit? Luke 3:22; Matthew 28:19. He is:

2. Who He Is (The Holy Spirit is a Person).

He is as much of a person as the Father and the Son.

He possesses intellect, emotions, and will.

3. What He Does

A. The Holy Spirit Comforts.

He is called the Comforter. (John 14:16, 26; 16:7)

The word “another” in v. 16 means “another of the same kind.”

The Holy Spirit is God just as Jesus Christ is God.

B. The Holy Spirit Counsels “He shall teach you all things.” (John 14:26)

He teaches when we read His Word. (2 Peter 1:20-21)

C. The Holy Spirit Convicts:

John 16:8-11: “He will reprove.” “Reprove” here means to convince with proof, as a lawyer presents his case in court. “To convict”

He has a threefold conviction of the world.

a. of sin

b. of righteousness

c. of judgement

You may apply these three judgements to the lost sinner.

The Holy Spirit uses Christian witness, the Word.

There is no salvation without Holy Spirit Conviction. He uses HIS Word to convict lost sinners.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
