Recap Last Week
“Christian, beware lest thou think lightly of sin. Take heed lest thou fall little by little. Sin a little thing? Is it not a poison? Who knows its deadliness? Sin a little thing? Do not the little foxes spoil the grapes? Doth not the tiny coral itself build a rock which wrecks a navy? Sin a little thing? It girded the Redeemer’s head with thorns, and pierced His heart! Could you weigh the least sin in the scales of eternity, you would fly from it as from a serpent. Look upon a sin as that which crucified the Saviour, and you will see it to be exceeding sinful.”—Charles Spurgeon
In the book of Revelation 10:9, it is told that the Apostle John ate a scroll that was “sour to the stomach but sweet as honey to the mouth.” Tonight’s message is going to feel similar to this event. As we continue our series “Rescue”, we are going to discuss the sin and the severity of sin. Sin is no small matter and the works of Jesus Christ is no laughing matter. Without the Savior, we would not be rescued. If you have your bible, turn with me to Romans 3 as we see what God’s Word has to say about the destruction of sin.
What then? Are we any better off? Not at all! For we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin, as it is written:
There is no one righteous, not even one.
There is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
All have turned away;
all alike have become worthless.
There is no one who does what is good,
not even one.
Their throat is an open grave;
they deceive with their tongues.
Vipers’ venom is under their lips.
Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.
Their feet are swift to shed blood;
ruin and wretchedness are in their paths,
and the path of peace they have not known.
There is no fear of God before their eyes.
Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are subject to the law, so that every mouth may be shut and the whole world may become subject to God’s judgment. For no one will be justified in his sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.
But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, attested by the Law and the Prophets. The righteousness of God is through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe, since there is no distinction. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

The Problem With Sin:
The Problem With Sin:
Sin-Primarily a wrong relationship with God, which may express itself in wrong attitudes or actions towards God himself, other human beings, possessions or the environment. Scripture stresses that this condition is deeply rooted in human nature, and that only God is able to break its penalty, power and presence.
Culture likes to call sin “mistakes”. It sounds politically correct and it makes it seem like sin isn’t that big of a deal.
Sin is a big deal! Sin has brought pain, death, and suffering to the world. Sin also prevents us from being in close relationship with God.
Sin is deeply rooted in our souls and it is not natural for us for desire Christ. Look at Romans 3 again;
What then? Are we any better off? Not at all! For we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin, as it is written:

there is no one who seeks God.

Paul is quoting scripture verses from Psalm 14:1-3 and Psalm 53:1-3 as a way to show the readers of this letter and us tonight that this isn’t something that he made up. This is something that was warned about before.
While we can grasp what sin is, we need to ask the deeper question, “Why is it so destructive?”
Destruction of Sin:
Destruction of Sin:
King Solomon, son of King David, was the wisest man ever to live on this earth. In all of his wisdom, that was given to him by the Lord, Solomon ended up writing a book we call in the bible, Proverbs. In chapter 6 of Proverbs, Solomon was lead by the Holy Spirit to pen the following verses;
The Lord hates six things;
in fact, seven are detestable to him:
arrogant eyes, a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that plots wicked schemes,
feet eager to run to evil,
a lying witness who gives false testimony,
and one who stirs up trouble among brothers.
1.) Arrogant Eyes:
Hebrew Verb: To be exalted or to be proud.
“Stick One’s Nose In The Air.”
(Example: The Pharisees)
When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
Destruction of Arrogant Eyes:
Arrogant eyes make you believe you are better than everyone else’s and that you have the power and authority to do whatever you want.
“We are not to look down on people. Instead we ought to think of individuals better than ourselves.”
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.
“The enemy loves to use this to blind those of the faith.”
2.) Lying Tongue:
Lie: an intentional violation of the truth.
Why Do People Lie?
Fear and Selfish Gain
The Destruction of Lying:
Can’t be trusted and it effects everyone.
(Example: Joe Geipel being truthful)
3.) Shedding of Innocent Blood:
Murder: The unlawful killing of individual human beings, forbidden by God and carrying the threat of severe punishment.
(Examples: Murder Robbery, The Holocaust, Genocide, Abortion, and Euthanasia.)
Destruction of Murder: (Share story of documentary of 6 survivors of the Holocaust)
4.) Wicked Schemes:
Taking advantage of someone.
5.) Running Towards Evil:
This is a person who is always looking for trouble.
6.) A False Testimony:
This is the flatter or the exaggerator.
7.) Stirring Up Trouble Among The Brothers:
“Gossip and rumors stir up trouble among the church.”
The Righteousness of God:
The Righteousness of God:
“The only way we are right with God is through the righteousness of Jesus Christ.”
