Have you seen the poster that reads, ‘Who says worry doesn’t work? Most of the things I worry about never happen!’
If you want to test your memory, try remembering what you worried about last year – or even last week!
Worry is like a rocking chair; it uses up all your energy but where does it get you? Leo Buscaglia writes, ‘Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy.’ He’s right!
Dr. Charles Mayo of the famous Mayo Clinic says, ‘There’s a growing mountain of evidence to suggest that worry is the chief contributor to depression, nervous breakdowns, high blood pressure, heart attacks, and early death. Stress kills. I’ve never known a man to die from hard work, but I’ve known a lot who died from worry.’
Mathematically speaking, it doesn’t make sense to worry. Psychologists tell us that roughly 30% of what we worry about never happens; another 30% has already happened; 12% is about unfounded health concerns, and an additional 20% involves worrying about the little things. That leaves only 8 %. Think about that! We worry 92% of the time for no good reason at all!
We fear so many things – and worry is a by-product! I began a sermon series last Sunday I’ve titled “Overcoming the Giant of Fear” and today we’re going to tackle the area of “worry”! If Dr. Mayo is right in what he says about worry, it’s killing us. So what’s the answer?Thankfully the Bible tells us. There are 3 passages I want us to look at this morning that greatly help us. The 1st one…

1. Matthew 6:25-34 .

Matthew 6:25–34 NASB95
“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? “And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? “And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. “But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ “For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
- In this section of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus picks up on all the things we get so anxious about (worry about) – food, clothing, water.
- Then He drives the point home in vs. 32-34…
1) God knows everything you need and He will provide them – He will take care of you!
2) Rather than being consumed with worry (anxiety), seek God and His Kingdom and His righteousness first and foremost!
- In other words, get focused on God and not the cares of the world around you!
- Understand this: God will take care of you! So you don’t have to become paralyzed with worry!
TS – And then…

2. Philippians 4:6-9.

- These verses give us God’s answer to worry…read…
6 Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks. 7 And God’s peace, which is so great we cannot understand it, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Brothers and sisters, think about the things that are good and worthy of praise. Think about the things that are true and honorable and right and pure and beautiful and respected. 9 Do what you learned and received from me, what I told you, and what you saw me do. And the God who gives peace will be with you.
- What’s God’s answer?
(1) Prayer – ask God for everything you need.
(2) Give God thanks!
(3) Think on – let your mind dwell on – the things that are good and worthy of praise = not the worries of your life and worries of the world! When you get focused on them, you will find yourself consumed with worry and anxiety! Focus and fix your mind on the good things – praise worthy things!
- And note the promises made here:
1) God’s peace which passes all understanding with stand guard over you!
2) God will be with you!
TS – The 3rd one…

3. Psalm 55:22.

Psalm 55:22 NASB95
Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.
- Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you!
- The NCV puts it this way: Give your worries to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will never let good people down.
- What burdens are you carrying today – what worries?
- You’re told to CAST them – as the Amplified says: release the weight of them - upon the Lord!
Conclusion
It’s been said: Those who live worry-free are those who keep casting their burdens upon the Lord until the enemy decides there’s no point giving them that burden anymore.
Trust is an attitude. And attitudes are nothing more than habits of thought!
Worry and worries definitely challenge your trust in God – It comes down to this: are you going to trust Him to take care of you – to sustain you – and see you through?
