Intro:
I remember being a young man and looking at the people around me. I was thinking man me and God must be in good with each other because all I see in this school are drukin’ teenagers all looking to have fun and care nothing about going to hell. Sure do feel sorry for them, sure am glad I am going to heaven. Yep that was me, the kid that went to church a few times in my life and here I was better than everyone. As a matter of fact I even remember thinking of this very verse:
Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”
Prayer
Yep, ya’ll better stop sinning and get it figured out like me or your going to hell. I don’t think I could even spell pharisee back then, must less understand what a pharisee was, but I have an inkling it looked something like what we find in John 5:9-10.
The Jew

At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”
A. Forbidding
1. The Law
a. Not what the Law said
i. that was their legalistic interpretation
ii. Shall do no work, that which distracts us from God
“If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord’s holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.” For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
b. Careful how Bible is interpreted
i. Keep it holy
ii. Set apart from the rest of the week, don’t do what you normally do
But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
c. Remember why we are here
i. Show the love of Christ
ii. Not to boss people around
2. Reason for Jesus
a. He is rectifying attitudes
b. Teaching about the true Law
He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “ ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’ You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”
B. Cared Nothing for the Sign

a. They ignored it like it was an everyday thing

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided,
c. Wasn’t that long after they started making their Idol
2. If only we would have stayed in Egypt
The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”
a. Easy to forget this is all about God not us
b. We can easily cast aside what God is teaching us

A. Sin no more
1. Called to be Holy
a. Like the Sabbath
b. To set himself apart
“They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
2. Do have some context here
a. Infirmity could have come from sin
i. God didn’t make him lame
ii. Perhaps he was working on the Sabbath and was injured
b. Don’t know for sure
i. Context supports this being a result of some sin
c. Not all infirmities are because of personal sin
i. Sin is a result of sin
ii. Brokenness is a part of sin
but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
Scars on my elbows, my Dad told me not to let them boys pull me on my skateboard, but it was just too good to resist. Now I have scars on my elbow to remind the importance of honoring my Dad.
B. Went and Told
1. Proclaimed the name of Jesus
a. He was excited to tell who healed Him
b. Who changed His life
“Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven.
2. Didn’t hesitate
a. He didn’t ignore the message
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
b. Didn’t wait for the perfect time
i. He had to proclaim the truth

I am a rule follower story - Military life.
A. Sometimes I don’t understand
1. Like the pharisee
a. Quick to proclaim the rules
i. even though I do break them
See even now I want to say sometimes because I want to mitigate my sin as if I am better than some.
b. I can get a holier than thou attitude
i. Thinking somehow I got it all figured out
B. But I am Healed
1. Remember what 1 Cor 13 says
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
a. Its easy to get wrapped up into right and wrong
b. But we can forget about God’s righteousness
2. Like the healed
a. Proclaim the Lord whenever I can
b. Not because I am better, but because I am the worst
Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.
c. Just because Paul hadn’t seen me
d. I Know we are all broken and in need of a Savior
i. Cannot forget this chief lesson
Conclusion:
I want to share with you another story about being a young man, after I had truly found Jesus. I had a guy at work that I knew was struggling. I don’t know with what but I do remember thinking about 1 Cor 13 and I know this man didn’t know Christ, so I shared with Him my thoughts about Jesus, but not so he wouldn’t go to hell, but because I knew he wanted to be well, just like this guy in the story. I knew the only way to be well was through Christ Jesus and I didn’t invite him to quit sinning, not just yet, but I invited him to see the one who had healed my wounds, Jesus Christ. I still am not better than anyone else, but I can tell you this, Jesus has healed my Pharisitical nature and has crushed my heart of stone and given me a heart of flesh. I can still play the pharisee pretty good if I am not careful, but man, what a joy to be the man who was made well and to give that healing to another person is even more amazing!
Let me close with this from Matt 7:2
“For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.
Let us go forth and judge with the grace of Christ!
