Was tempted by the devilThen was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.2. The first temptation: To prove His deity by using His power for personal reasons2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.a. The temptation1) To secure man’s loyalty by His own power2) To trust Himself & His own ability instead of God3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.b. Jesus’ answer: Quoted Script.1) Man needs more than bread2) Man needs God’s Word to meet daily needs4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.3. The second temptation: To prove His deity by the spectacular5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,a. The temptation1) To test God & to presume that God would take care of Him no matter what sin or foolish thing He did2) To attract attention by the spectacular & secure the people’s following6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.b. Jesus’ answer: Quoted Script.1) God is not to be tested2) God, not the spectacular, is to be trusted7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.4. The third temptation: To prove His deity by compromisea. The temptation1) To achieve His purpose by another route8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;2) To switch loyalties or take a shortcut to secure the people’s worship9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.b. Jesus’ answer: Quoted Script.1) Satan must be rejected2) God alone must be worshipped & served10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.5. The triumphant victory: Christ conquered the temptation11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him
