Deuteronomy 6:4–5 ESV
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

The Shema

The Shema refers to a couple lines from the book of Deuteronomy (6:4-5), that became a daily prayer in Ancient Israelite tradition. It’s the equivalent of the Lord’s prayer (“Our Father in heaven…”) in Christian tradition.
There is but One God
God called Abraham to come out of the polytheism of his time
Joshua stressed this to the children of Israel in his time as well
Joshua 24:15 ESV
And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Because of the competition for the mind of Gods people, Moses stressed the knowing and understand God and His world
Deuteronomy 11:18–20 ESV
“You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,

THE FIRST AND GREATEST COMMANDMENT

Mark 12:28–30 ESV
And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
Note WHO you should love first – God!

God Has Always Shown is Love for Us

Isaiah 49:14–16 ESV
But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.
God has never had any problem with His love.
Until we see that – we will never see what it truly means to love God.
Has God ever commanded anything that He himself was not willing to do?
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

2nd Great Commandment

Mark 12:31 ESV
The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
The 2nd command is comparative “love your neighbor like..”
The 1st Commandment is not comparative
One could say, I will love the Lord like I love myself
Our love for God MUST HAVE NO COMPARISONS

At What Level Should We Love God?

Deuteronomy 6:5 ESV
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Does God “need” our love?
The foremost way to express our love for God is to love your neighbor as yourself
I was hungry and you gave me.
THESE ARE NOT WORKS BUT AN EXPRESSION OF OUR LOVE OF GOD!
If I am not concerned over my neighbor’s eternal destiny then I am NOT Loving God with ALL my Heart, All my Soul, All my mind and All my Strength
We have a covenant relationship in the Church.
We are not called to bring about discipline in a nation.

How do we Love God is a Pluralistic Age

Remove distractions
Deuteronomy 12:1–4 ESV
“These are the statutes and rules that you shall be careful to do in the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess, all the days that you live on the earth. You shall surely destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. You shall tear down their altars and dash in pieces their pillars and burn their Asherim with fire. You shall chop down the carved images of their gods and destroy their name out of that place. You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way.
God does not want competition
Isa 40-45 The other gods are powerless
