What is God's love?

We tell people God loves them, but what does that mean? What is God’s love?

We can’t understand God’s love because it has attributes that nothing else has.

God’s love endures forever

Psalm 136:1–26 (NIV)

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. 2 Give thanks to the God of gods. God’s love is invincible

Romans 8:31–39 (NIV)

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God’s love is eternal

Psalm 103:13–18 (NIV)

13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; 14 for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. 15 The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; 16 the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. 17 But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children— 18 with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.

Even Paul didn’t know how to explain it

Ephesians 3:14–21 (NIV)

14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

What does it mean, that God loves YOU?

It gives you value: the way you measure something’s worth is by love. In economics it’s worth what people are willing to pay. Things are not valued by the inherent worth of their parts, they are valued according to what one is willing to pay for them.

1 John 4:7–12 (NIV)

7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Our value is measured according to the magnitude of God’s love for us

11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

When we love one another we display a divine love we have no ability to grasp

When we tell people that God loves them, that means that they are unimaginably valuable. Did you know that? Did you know that because God loves you, there is nothing more valuable in this entire universe? God’s love cannot be comprehended. It has attributes that we don’t see in this world, we have nothing to relate it to. And that love… God is willing to use you as a vehicle to carry that divine love into your family, community, and to everyone around you. And He makes it perfect in you when we love one another.

The truth is, the way we experience, understand, see God’s love is not intellectually. If you want to know God’s love you have to love with it. It’s the only way.
