We are looking at the attitude we need to have when facing difficulty, opposition and suffering in our faith
We were told in the previous verses to take honest stock of our lives, what is hindering us that we need to separate ourselves from
And…Confess and deal with any sin activity that is happening in our lives.
State:
After that is done
The writer of Hebrews turns his focus onto the next thing we should consider in our contending with hardship
Hebrews 12:1–3 (NL
And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. 2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. 3 Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up.
State:
We have made a Christian Industry out of what God is going to give us in this life.
The idea that we might have to live with an:
illness,
an unanswered prayer,
unfullfilled ambitions,
setbacks and dissappointments
is not easy for people raised in a culture of ease.
Walking this type of an experience is not a common sermon topic or selling point for the faith.
Jesus was able to face the shame, rejection, betrayal and torture of the cross BECAUSE he was focused on what was beyond it....beyond this life.
If that is what Jesus used to face his life of sacrifice....we should be the same.
Matthew 6:19–20 NLT
19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.
State: What is that saying?
Make what is most important to you…the things of heaven
State: Shifting from a Christian cultural mindset that says God wants you to have a lifestyle equal to those around you
The western standard of living and expectation of comfort and ease is staggering
That is why THE WHOLE WORLD wants to come and live here
State: The shift away from such an expectation has to happen. It is being forced upon us by a changing world
State:
It says....”Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross”
Notice that the “joy” spoken of here “awaits” Jesus on the other side of the cross.
We are given a rare glimpse into a time Jesus was noticeably full of joy…
These times of joy must have been rare because Luke made mention of the fact that Jesus was filled with joy.
Example....
Luke 10:18–21 NLT
18 “Yes,” he told them, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning! 19 Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you. 20 But don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.” 21 At that same time Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, and he said, “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way.
State:
The disciples joy
The disciples joy should not come from their authority and power (stuff with them here)
But rejoiced because their names ARE registered in heaven
1) Your name is registered in heaven
Revelation 20:12 NLT
12 I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books.
Psalm 139:16 NLT
16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.
Daniel 12:1 NLT
1 “At that time Michael, the archangel who stands guard over your nation, will arise. Then there will be a time of anguish greater than any since nations first came into existence. But at that time every one of your people whose name is written in the book will be rescued.
Philippians 4:3 NLT
3 And I ask you, my true partner, to help these two women, for they worked hard with me in telling others the Good News. They worked along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are written in the Book of Life.
Revelation 20:15 NLT
15 And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.
The disciples names were written in heaven before they got there
Their life of faith was not an audition for salvation
Jesus did not say their names....will be, might be, could be...
He said they ARE! And yours is also.
2) The joy Jesus wanted them to have was not in the earthly authority and power.....but in their heavenly destination.
Jesus’s Joy
He saw for the first time what the church is going to look like.
He was full of joy because the Father had
“ hiden these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike”
It was a small teaser of what the church would look like..
That made Jesus joyful!
State:
What we are learning from this passage in Hebrews?
Whate enables us to endure persecution and hardship?
Don’t focus on this life
Focus on the life to come, just as Jesus did.
